At one point a dude pushed past us shouting that we were clogging the sidewalk. It was pretty funny, and made me feel a bit sheepish since I really hate it when tourists clog the sidewalk in front of stores downtown.

Right, here's some snow:

I am holding the shovel. My friends and I decided to dig a maze for their Corgis. The one to the left was a right cheeky bastard who kept making his own shortcuts.

The outside of the igloo...used a table for the entry tunnel, it took about 2 hours of piling snow on and another hour and a half of digging out the middle. Plus 3 hours in between waiting for it to harden a bit.

Here's a shot of the interior. It fit 3 people comfortably, and it was at least 4-5 inches thick. Naturally we did things in the igloo which probably shouldn't be posted here.

We did all of this in one day, this is how exhausted I was at the halfway point:

That is not an igloo, it is a quinzee. An igloo is built up of bricks of hard snow, while a quinzee is formed by digging a pit, then packing a mound, and then digging out the inside.
Just so you know.

I ain't no Inuit, it is just what came up when I googled how to make an igloo. We didn't dig a pit, either, we took the surrounding snow and piled on top of it so the ground is actually a couple inches below the floor...I guess it's technically a snow shelter? They're all just glorified piles of snow that you can crawl into, anyway.

I am part Inuit, and that ain't no igloo. What you got there is an emergency snow shelter; it's easy, non-skilled work you can do in a blizzard without too much hassle and does not require the presence of firm snow to make bricks out of. I have helped build such things but never slept in them. Your table/door frame is pretty cool.
Digging the pit is not necessary, but you should tramp out the area (preferably with snow shoes) before hand so you've got a good foundation.
An igloo is not a pile, it is a building.

Slick, who cares? It's a cool snow tunnel thing, and because I hail from a place where any amount of snow is viewed as a freak of nature (Texas), I'm extra impressed by his work. I'm fairly certain that a lot of people aren't concerned about the logistics of the "snow shelter" itself or how to correctly label it.

Plus, CORGIS!!! Need I say more...

PS: The "emergency snow shelter" he built doesn't look like easy, non-skilled work. But perhaps I just don't have trained, part-Inuit eyes
