Yeah, but local markets can be very tricky, especially when it comes to male accessories and doubly so when it comes to something that is associated to formal attire.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't give it a go though, but this is one area where a bit of market research will set you in good stead.

Ties don't need to be silk, many are polyester or other synthetic fabric. I'm not aware of a large market for cotton although wool is on a bit of a resurgence in the UK at the moment.

Do you have any designs available for us to look at? I'd be happy to give feedback. In fact if you make something that I think is good and suits me then I will be prepared to buy one and tell people where I got it from. Can't say fairer than that.

Noooo do not hate ties. Ties are great! Ties are lovely!

I don't hate them! I'm just not good at tying them, so it is annoying, so I didn't.

Well I am considering buying a pattern like this one. This way I can make both thick and thin ties. Then I can use any fabric I want, aside from anything with stretch - I can't see that looking too good. But most that I've seen have a sheen to them - silky or satiny, whatever the fabric content. What kind of wool is popular?

If you are (or anyone else is) interested, you can send me a PM with your preference in material, length and width. I don't see it being difficult to make them, but I'd want to try out the pattern before actually selling it to anyone. So it may be a couple of weeks until I have one that is acceptable.

I would think that the concept of a completely customizable tie could be attractive to some. But you're right, I need to do some more market research type stuff. Thanks guys!

If you do, definitely get an etsy store up and running! Good search functions and gets you out of just the immediate market

Right over left, repeat, up and through, tighten. I found a site that taught me online when I had an interview last year, but it took 27 tries to get it right. Clumsy, I am.

Ties are easy.

Bowties keep giving me hell. I can do it with some practice, but by the next time I try I can't do it again. It's annoying.

Sheen is a bit of a convention, although often it's product of using silk in it's most common form. I think lined silk holds it's form pretty well and drops creases very quickly after use. I've remembered that my dad used to have a cotton tie that had been made out of a batik print fabric. The resurgence of wool is usually in a tight knit or weave of a heavy tweed blend.

If you want pattern testing with a fabric then I'm happy to help (although that would require despatch to England). Otherwise, I'm not committed to shiny and prefer non-patterned asymetrical prints in deep colours, nothing too striking and not too much white.

Man, bow-tie knots are fucking complicated.

I am pretty sure the one tie knot I know is the half-Windsor. Maybe.

Guys, if I can tie a half-Windsor normal AND reversed [on someone else], you can at least do it on your own neck.

Put a little thought into which tie knot you are using, guys!

Different techniques for tying go with different types of collar, which in turn go with different types of face. The general rule is that thin faced fellows should wear a wide-spread collar, and vice versa. In keeping with that, use a wider tie-knot (i.e; Full Windsor) for a wide collar, and a smaller knot (Four-in-Hand a.k.a. the first knot pretty much everyone learns a.k.a. the one Shane described upthread or a Half-Windsor) for a narrower spread. It's also worth noting that wider/thicker/more ornate tie-knots are more formal than thinner and simpler ones. In other words, you wouldn't use a full Windsor knot underneath a sweater or with a sports jacket/blazer and chinos/jeans. I personally favour the half-Windsor over the four-in-hand most of the time because the four-in-hand actually produces an asymmetrical knot, which doesn't look as neat or put-together as other symmetrical knots.

Here's the two resources I head straight to when I wanna try a new knot or when I need refreshing on the old standards:

How to Tie a Tie- Ben Silver Contains a few interesting, more obscure tie-knots, as well as bow-ties and ascots(!)
How to Tie a Tie- The Art of Manliness Features Youtube videos for all the major knots, plus the mysterious and enigmatic Shelby knot.

When they are finished, I have to say, I cannot tell the difference between the half-windsor and the windsor. In fact, I don't know that I could pick out a Shelby as different than the other two, either.

when i was a bridesmaid like two years ago i ended up tying most of the groomsman's ties. since the groom and the best man both already had four-in-hand, that's what everyone else got too. a lady who can tie a tie well is a good resource for all formal occasions, i feel. plus, i think it's a weird sort of romantic when i have tied the tie of a SO.

Like Spluff said, the end result is all about size, so a lot can depend on the tie, particularly after that whole narrow tie thing hit. A proper fuck-off-I'm-huge full windsor generally requires a longer tie than most people buy to get the full effect if you're actually putting a pretty serious knot in it. Otherwise the size is noticeable but not really a huge deal. The varying amounts of material in different ties are part of why Johnny's half-windsor all the time approach can end up working out OK if you have a decent tie selection and are handy enough with a knot. With that said, I still have a few favorite ties that I prefer to use a four-in-hand with.

True. That's another reason I generally favour the half-windsor, because a four-in-hand generally looks pretty insubstantial with many of my ties. That said, I can't use anything except a four-in-hand with the infamous sock-tie.

Aight, dicks, I am working on my Mardi Gras costume hardcore now, but no one checks the crafty forum and I want opinions, so. Tonight I played with makeup for three hours to see if I want to do a painted mask instead of making one. The results are pretty rough, but for a first sketch I think it isn't so bad, considering how much I need to go buy. Sorry for the quality, I only have my webcam to work with right now.

Whatever color you're going to use for filling it in should pop out more. I can't really tell if that's silver (that's what I'm guessing), but maybe it'd pop out more if it was more opaque. I think it'll look better once you can't see your eyebrows.

Also you guys! I don't wear heels at all (my feet get sore easily plus I am super clumsy) but I feel like I need to start trying. The above link are some shoes I have seen in real lifes but am totally unsure what to do due to a) expense b) height but I am totally diggin' the t-strap and I have heard that wedges make for an easier transition into heel wearing. SHOULD I BUY THEM Y/N or should I keep hunting around for some that are maybe not suede or that are slightly cheaper or more vintage?

So in the last 15 months I managed to put on 1/4 my original bodyweight.

As a result all my pants no longer fit. I'm all set for work pants, but I need casual pantstrousersjeanstypesofthings suggestions.

I've pretty much got no sense of style so I'm pretty much open to anything except assless* chaps or culottes.

*I would say arseless chaps, but that doesn't look right on the internet.

Chaps are by definition assless so the word is unnecessary. Chaps with an ass would be pants.
