hey fashion thread I've got some fashions for you
Make/model?

I've got a new pair of jeans I need to wash. Hopefully they don't come out too small. I have pretty much two pair of jeans with no holes in them. One of those pairs fits me. I really need a good pair as back-up in case of the other getting messed up somehow.

So in the last 15 months I managed to put on 1/4 my original bodyweight.

As a result all my pants no longer fit. I'm all set for work pants, but I need casual pantstrousersjeanstypesofthings suggestions.

I've pretty much got no sense of style so I'm pretty much open to anything except assless* chaps or culottes.

*I would say arseless chaps, but that doesn't look right on the internet.

Just buy corduroy pants in a bunch of colors. Cords=nice dude butt.

Chaps are by definition assless so the word is unnecessary. Chaps with an ass would be pants.

THIS! for some reason it drives me crazy when people are wrong about this.

Also I second cords, some reason dudes in cords drive me mad.

I've got a new pair of jeans I need to wash. Hopefully they don't come out too small.

Wash on cold, hang to dry. I do that with all of my jeans now. Then put them in the dryer for like 5 minutes to soften 'em up a little.

I was gonna ask today what kind of new trousers I should get, but I guess that question has been answered already.

Assless cords?

Not that I'm one to belittle cords (I have a favourite pair of greyish-greenish cords I've loved to tatters), but I don't think cords would really suit me at the moment, they've always seemed to be one of those pieces of clothing you need to be at least vaguely trim to pull off. ATM, I'm a bit dumpy. The advice *is* appreciated, though.

I'll also remember not to say "assless/arseless chaps in the future, heh.

Personally, I like dark-wash jeans with a bootcut on men. No sandblasting, or anything other crazy embellishments. Or, dark twill or khaki-material type pants. My boyfriend is pretty chubby and looks awesome in them. I also love military style pants but in black or gray or green, no camo.

By military style pants do you mean cargo pants or anything that are baggy with big pockets? Because if so I am vetoing that.

I second darker pants with no fading in bootcut. Darker pants help slim you down and bootcut is flattering on most body types. I highly suggest dark wash jeans (no fading shit), black jeans, and darker trousers in twill, cordory, or khaki/chino, like black, navy, brown, or olive. (Chinos are awesome and can usually be dressed up or down depending on the style/cut, so I highly recommend those.)

Oh I dunno. Combats can look good if worn in the right way. Not that I'm holding them up as contemporary style icons but consider Tank Girl and Aisha from The Losers.

Probably telling that my style advice is derived from comic books though.

I love them on guys but then I have a thing for the military look in general. My boyfriend has a cadet hat and pants like those and even combat boots. And some military-inspired jackets.

Admittedly they don't work on everyone. What Linds said will work on like 95% of guys. Only please never get any pleat-front pants - they look awful on anybody. I thought that was an 80s/90s thing but while shopping for dress pants for the boy I found that they still manufacture those atrocities.

UGH pleat fronts. Those were required for a uniform for a job I had as a teenager and I refused to wear them. I refuse to ever wear those things, they are hideous and give people old lady hips.

It's ridiculous around here. I cannot find flat-front dress pants to save my life, and I refuse to wear pleats. I am not an old accountant!

The military look can be excellent. I wear Docs most days of the week, I love old school military jackets, etc.

Cargo pants are never fashionable. They are for utility. Hence cargo pants. The same combat boots with some nice jeans that don't look like a a bag with external pockets will look infinitely nicer.

In what sense are you old?

Styles change; twenty years ago I wore lots of pleat-fronted chinos - now I hate them.  But my dress trousers* (bought two years ago, just before I lost a lot of weight - grr) are flat-fronted.

* By which I mean a full DJ outfit; I suppose that's what was being referred to, but I'm not sure.

Careful talking about that "old" stuff.  I am 70 and wear cargo pants almost exclusively.  The ideal computer geek uniform is cargo pants and denim shirts, in my opinion.  (Except for the occasional wearing of the "She Blinded Me With Library Science" T-shirt, of course),

I'm not sure what your point is given that "Never take fashion tips from the IT department or former mathletes" is one of the first lessons modern fashion tries to impress upon young people.

I mean, yeah, I used to wear cargo pants. That's because I worked in a loading dock. There are great reasons for wearing that stuff but you should still change when you get home if you plan on going anywhere.

I soon realized that dressing like my dad wasn't necessarily the best way to get girls.

I can see the slim, but those have a lot of taper. Unless it is just that the thighs stretched out while the calves didn't have to. Honestly, I think you would probably look better with less taper.

But then again, I'm pretty much forbidden from wearing anything with taper. 501s that fit my waist are too tight on my thighs unless/until I stretch them, and then it's still a close thing for the first few days. I would look like a top if I wore tapered jeans.

I gotta say, I am pretty much a sucker for the boots-cargo pants-tshirt look on buff dudes. I guess it makes them look like they are about to go do some serious physical work stuff. Of course, it really only appeals to me if it is accompanied by a few grease smudges and the tshirt has a stain here and there, so I guess really it is only attractive if it is functional. So, this post is not really contributory in any way, actually. Yeah.

Workin' dudes. Mmmm.

Thanks for all the advice! I'll definitely try to get me some dark bootcut jeans. Once again, I have a pair I love to death, but don't fit into anymore. I think I have some black combat pants I *do* fit into somewhere, back from when I used to be this size. I used to pair them with the obligatory stompy boots, heh. I might see if I can drag them out of retirement.

I think I'll pass on the cargo pants, though. I used to wear them pretty much exclusively from the age of about 14 to 18 and now I can't look at a pair without getting flashbacks from my [ultra] awkward teens.

Yeah, there's a reason you don't see guys built like Henry Rollins in skinny jeans. When you're heavy or have packed on some pretty serious muscle they just make you look like you're going to pull a Bruce Banner on everyone. Honestly, it's probably my favorite cut of jeans, as long as we're not talking about crazy bellbottoms. But then, as I've said before, I don't really believe in wearing jeans tighter than say, Elvis circa Jail house Rock.

I bought a dress today!

I am wearing it to a friends wedding in April.  It comes with a fabric belt thing with a flower on it.  I like it in theory, but I have a concern.  Be honest with me Fashion Thread, is that flower too small for a lady my size?  I feel like it is so small on my, um, ample frame.

Close up of said flower overshadowed by other focal points:

PS I need to dust that mirror.

I actually don't think it has to do with you so much as the size of the flowers in the print. Perhaps it is because there is more of you to cover and so the size of the flowers in the print is more obvious? but I really don't think so.

But yes. That flower is too small. The flowers in the dress are huge in comparison, and they dwarf it.

that too

Edit: Oh yes, I just noticed that I never actually said it was a good dress. Sorry. Allison is right. Great dress.

Edit #2: Also, I just had a thought when I noticed that it has belt loops. I have a dress like that and it made the belt sit in a funny place on my torso, so I cut the belt loops off and just let the belt go wherever it would naturally. I vote for that.

You realize that there is a middle ground between skinny jeans and bootcut jeans, right? Straight leg jeans are great if you don't have too large hips for the waist. I'm not sure what to do if you do, although I think there are some cuts that are good for that (levi 560 or something like that). Generally, you want a rectangular profile for men's jeans. I like bellbottoms on some women, but I haven't seen them look good on guys.

Also, the jeans I've seen Henry Rollins wearing look like straight cut.

Television characters are a poor example of what people actually look like in real life given that most television shows aspire to portray an alternate version of real life where everyone is more interesting, funny, and well dressed.

I still wear army jackets!

See pictures of Jens in army jackets for examples of Doing It Right.

Well... most people here call Jhocking old, and I am older than he is, so that is the sense in which I am old.  ;)

Joe is not old in theoretical human years inferred from his appearance. He's just a really youthful, handsome looking ancient.

I like bellbottoms on some women, but I haven't seen them look good on guys.

Bootcut doesn't have to mean bellbottoms, I consider them much closer to straight leg than flared. The straight leg looks great if you are on the slim or slightly chunky side. It's when you get a bit heavier that bootcut is much better. Though really I like bootcut on any size.

Also I love flared jeans but find it almost impossible to find the super-flared type in my size. I have a giant ass and would like to offset it with giant pants. I used to wear the raver-style pants and actually still own a few pairs, but I'm thinking that they might be inappropriate for work and maybe regular life too. My favorite pair is still sitting in my dresser.. size 42 mens, with 44 inch leg openings, and back pockets from ass to ankles. When asked why I wore such large pants, I generally said "so I can steal children".

I wear a lot of boot cut jeans.  I think they balance my big top half without looking silly.  Also I have the thickest calves and so even straight legs can be tighter than I like sometimes.  Also, in ladies jeans at least, boot cut seems to be a little longer since they think I am wearing them with heeled boots.  I am not crazy tall or anything (5' 7") but I have long legs.  My legs are actually the same length as Stephen's and he is 5' 11" and I find that jeans are just a smidge too short a lot of the time.

So I'm gonna take the flower off the dress, and prolly the belt loops too.  Should I keep their ribbon belt or just get a ribbon to tie, with a bow maybe?

If you can find a giant blue flower to put on there, I say keep the belt. Otherwise go for a ribbon and tie it in a bow. Nice dress!

Television characters are a poor example of what people actually look like in real life given that most television shows aspire to portray an alternate version of real life where everyone is more interesting, funny, and well dressed.

It was a joke. That's just what I immediately thought of when I read that.

But really, most IT people I know dress like Roy. Or at least in the department I work for. Nerdy t-shirts, jeans, and sneakers. Including the girls. (I'm sure more important IT jobs have people dressing more professionally.)

Whoops, meant to say bootcut. Slip of the fingers.

Although I will hold to what I said about bellbottoms looking good on some women, though. And to what I said about bootcuts not looking good on guys. It doesn't even make sense for boots, I've never worn jeans that I couldn't fit over boots.

Ladies, I just discovered last night that Levi's is doing a new thing for different body shapes. I don't know how useful it might be, and I don't have any money to test it out, but it looks kind of nice and I wish I could get some new jeans.

Hey everyone, I need to buy some new bookshelves. When I get back from Ikea and put them together you're all invited to the bookshelf launch party.

Lane Bryant/Fashion Bug has a similar fitting system. Unfortunately, even though their pants fit me better, they are completely unflattering. I'm the blue circle (big hips, big butt, small waist) and they are like a neon sign on my belly, making it look even bigger. I suggest finding a way to try them on before buying them.

ETA: papersatan, I love the dress. I definitely think you should get rid of the belt and loops. It would be extra awesome if you could get a wide ribbon/belt that matches the blue in the flowers and tie it right below your boobs. You might need to find a way to attach it since it's unlikely stay there easily.. maybe a few basting stitches? It would be cute to have a bow in the back but maybe that's a little too young? I dunno.

Katie, in my afternoon of awfulness when I tried on 12 different pairs of jeans and liked none of them I tried on some of those jeans. There was a levis lady in the store so she helped me out and got me to start with the demi curve ones (they were huge, we realised I had a size too big, tried a smaller pair that still gaped like hell around my waist) then went on to the bold curve which fit my waist well but made my bottom look like nothing special. It is a good idea, and I would have gotten that bold curve if just because they fit my waist, if I hadn't tried on a pair of Dr Denim jeans that made my bottom look fantastic but gaped at the back. Also probably would have gotten them if I was in a better mood, but after spending probably an hour trying on jeans and liking none of them I was feeling pretty crappy at the end of it.
