It was a joke. That's just what I immediately thought of when I read that.

But really, most IT people I know dress like Roy. Or at least in the department I work for. Nerdy t-shirts, jeans, and sneakers. Including the girls. (I'm sure more important IT jobs have people dressing more professionally.)

i work in IT for a gigantic insurance company and we have to dress up :( it sucks. work dress codes blow

I work for a game development company and our only dress code is that our clothes aren't falling apart. Some of the boys take this to the extreme though.

Only three of my jobs have ever required a uniform. Khakis at Walmart, khakis and a polo at Blockbuster, and jeans and a white button-down at Picture People. At Hot Topic I could wear whatever the hell I wanted which was pretty awesome. And now I work in credentialing, in an office, and can still wear almost whatever I want, though nothing vulgar and no facial piercings.

I dunno that I could do a full uniform. Especially fancy office stuff, though it would be fun to go shopping for it, until I'm reminded that it's almost impossible to find anything flattering in my size ever.

The only job I ever had that needed a uniform I quit and walked out the same day.

I hope that the programming job market never dries up because if it does I am fucked.

It won't dry up, but it will probably become a lot more competitive.

Hopefully after I find a good position to stay at for long enough that I won't have trouble finding another if I have to leave.

I've got some new jeans. They're 501s, button fly and everything.

Is it bad that I have the impulse to wear nothing but these jeans cuffed, chucks, a white t-shirt, and possibly a leather jacket for the next week or two?

This is basically how I've been dressing for 30 years.   The decision tree for my non-work attire is:   Jeans->   White shirt or black shirt-> Chucks or Docs-> Leather or Bomber.   Done.

I just realized that the only white shirts I have are either a bit too large to look good, or v-necks that I wear as undershirts for button-downs. I guess I'll need to hold off until I can find an excuse to buy more shirts.

Dudes with Docs:

That brown pair I bought several pages back? The sole has developed a crack in the left boot, about halfway up. A standard superglue should fix that up, non?

Ladies with Docs:

Same question as above, but you're not very good with alliteration.

I can't do Vans. Or Chucks for that matter which sucks. For one, Vans are ugly. (sorry) For two, both of them have no support and hurt the tootsies.

I'm loving the rubber-toe (like on chucks and some adidas) but they're not prevalent enough right now to get a whole lot of variety. I'm sort of considering spending the money on those purple adidas but $115 is soooo much. Is that what normal people spend on shoes?

It's ok! They aren't for everyone. I think they're super comfy, but I have a low arch and generally find most shoes comfortable that have minimal support. I guess if you really wanted Chucks, you'd have to buy inserts.

Here is Zappo's selection of purple gym shoes, if it helps. I'm planning on getting these, actually, when I have enough money to spend on things that aren't college/rent/food related. I need new sneakers really bad...

I've gotten to an awkward stage with shoes - I like to have a few pairs of smart shoes and I just bought another pair of Converses. I sometimes look at my dads shoes and think "damn, the old man has some sharp shoes". Then I remember he's 54 and I'm 20 and yeahhhh.

I boots seem to be the big thing for guys in England at the moment. Then we'll get to summer and they'll all get their damned rolled up chinos and boat shoes out again. Don't understanddd rolled up trousers.

I haven't really bothered with shoes until recently. I keep a couple of pairs to match certain things. I've a pair of classic leather Sperrys (I wanted to wear them in before the summer), white canvas shoes from Cuba, and gray H&M keds that are convenient in most situations.

I guess I have never owned a little black dress on account of the fact that I never like the ones I could actually afford, and I really cannot justify spending $400 on any dress mostly since I could easily make the exact same thing for $50 or less if I make the effort, but I never get around to it.

Story of my clothes-making life, basically.

Sperry is a brand that sells boat shoes.

I still do not get boat shoes. I went shopping with my mom and she liked all the boat shoes. Generally we do not have the same taste in shoes, so I took this as a sign that I am right in not liking them.
