I bought boots! I went shopping with my mom today and we got boots that were on sale. ($130 for 3 pairs, fuck yes. Especially when all three would have easily been twice that not on sale.) Sorry for the cruddy images, but my mom is borrowing my camera and I had to resort to my laptop camera.

But here's what I got!

The last pair my mom and I are going to have joint custody with the pair she got. (Can't find a photo online, so I'll have to wait until I trade off the sweater ones for them.)

I'm going to wear them with pants, not tights like I'm wearing there. They are really effing comfy and warm, which will be nice on days it's below freezing.

Ok I need your help fashion friends.  I just got a job at Macy's for the holidays.  I have to wear black.   I don't own much black so I need to go shopping.  Right now I have one pair of black pants and one black skirt and no black tops.  This job is only seasonal so I don't want to spend a lot of money, but it is full time so I need to have a variety of things to wear.  I was thinking that I should get a nice black cardigan and a black blazer.  I can wear colored shirts under those, so I think it would be less of an investment in the end, and I guess I could use a black blazer anyways, right now I have a grey one and a turquoise one.  I think I'll be able to find a cardigan no problem but I am less sure about a blazer.  I have three constrains.

1. I am big.  I wear a size 22w so most of the nice fashionable stores are out of the question. A lot of the things sold for people as big as me end up looking too old for me or fit poorly.

2. My hair. This seems unrelated, and is really only related in my head I guess.  As I said a lot of the clothing in my size looks too old for me. I am also wary of anything that does not fit me well or look "me."  I suppose everyone is, but I feel that in professional settings I need to combat any stereotypes that I must be some sort of slacker who is on drugs.  If my clothes are not something I love, I feel like I look like I am playing dress-up in borrowed clothing instead of looking like I mean business.  I don't know that this actually matters anymore for me that for anyone else, but I feel like it does.  I am trying to push the impression of me away from "punk rock slacker" towards "creative and fashionable."  I feel like that fails if my clothes don't look like they are mine.

3. Quality/cleanablity.  I am going to be wearing this most days for this job so it needs to not be too delicate and to be cleanable at home.

I usually shop here But the only one I like, the second one, is not in my size. (actually I like the first one too , but it is not in black)
Any suggestions about where to look?
Edit: I will be getting a discount at Macy's but the only ones I can find there are dry clean only.  How bad would it be to wash one of them?

Have you tried Torrid, Ashley Stewart or Wal-Mart? They all end up being 50-50 for me at best (as a chubby girl) but when I find something good it's usually pretty awesome. Here are some suggestions from Torrid:

http://www.torrid.com/torrid/Clearance/Tops/Black-PuffSleeved-Tee-528854.jsp
http://www.torrid.com/torrid/Clearance/Tops/Black-Ruched-ElbowSleeve-Top-528409.jsp
http://www.torrid.com/torrid/Clearance/Tops/Black-Ribbed-34Sleeved-Cardigan-552194.jsp

Even if your size isn't online, they can generally find where it is in your area, or get it shipped to the closest store. The AS website is pretty terrible, you're better off going into a store.

My suggestions would be like TJ Maxx and Ross, maybe? Also, you can really do all right with making your own stuff as long as you do it smart. I don't know what sort of fabric shops you have nearby, but JoAnn's has a bi-weekly mailer with a coupon for 40% off [a single item that is not already on sale] and which will tell you when certain brands of patterns are on sale for 99¢, and you can pick up 100% cotton and synthetics for around $5/yd (or see when they have proper sales, not that 30% off bullshit they have all the time).

Simplicity has some cute patterns that look pretty easy that you could probably put together in a night or two, like this one.

I've never heard of Torrid, as there is not one in my city, but there is in the next city over so I might go check them out.  I had considered just making one, and I still might I think I actually have a pattern at home for a jacket.  I will check that when I get back.  Patterns run into the same problem as general clothing though: the awsome ones don't come in my size.  Case in point:
http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v8333-products-5652.php?page_id=262
I like that a lot, but if I bought the largest pattern offered I would have to add 10 inches to the waist and 11 to the bust and by that point you risk it getting wonky looking.  I might try it anyways in muslin or something as see how it comes out.

I have a dress and used to have a few pants from Torrid. They've got some nice things. Too bad Lane Bryant isn't working out, because that was going to be my suggestion. :( I love LB and Cacique. Things fit! It's crazy!

Torrid dosen't actually have any blazers that I can find and their stuff looks a little young for me honestly, though there are a few good pieces.  I think I might make one. Either that vogue one I linked before or this one:
http://www.simplicity.com/p-3647-misses-sportswear-threads-collection.aspx?VariantID=9689
Lane Bryant has a lot of outragous things I could never wear, but I find a lot of great things there too.  Most of my pants are from them and all of my bras because, like you said they fit! Both of the blazers I have are from there and they fit me well and look great.  They have a few black sweaters that would work so maybe I will just skip the blazer and go with sweaters.

I can't really find my size a lot of places, but Cacique always has it and they always have sales and stuff, so hey. I can't wear their shirts, though, because I'm a 12 top and a 14 bottom, so I'm at a weird in between when it comes to sizes.

What helped a lot for me was to get my eyes tested, and look out of the shop while wearing the weird test-out-what-strenght-you-need glasses. The realisation there are actually (in my case shoes) in the shopwindow across the street helped a lot with accepting glasses.

Apart from that, it just takes time to feel you look unstupid with glasses. :)

Yeah, I somehow manage to be consistently surprised when I update my prescription. I do so much near-work that my nearsightedness isn't that big of a problem and my degeneration is so gradual that I simply don't realize how much sharper things can be until I step out of that office with new lenses. I let a few years lapse between visits once and after the update I felt like I could all but see through walls.

your only two options here are to a) stay blind forever out of vanity or b) get over it and start wearing glasses, so i guess get over it and start wearing glasses? i mean it sucks but there is really nothing else you can do save for holding out for laser eye surgery.

Yeah I haven't worn glasses in nearly a year and my old perscription was from when I was 16, life is gonna feel like I'm on drugs.

I'm going to get glasses, I'm just not sure what ones would be best. I kind of want to get silly glasses so that my silly feeling will be intentional

alternately if you know someone in the states who would be willing to act as a middleperson and ship them to you, warby parker have absolutely gorgeous frames with prescription lenses included and everything on their website (save for the pink japhys which are overpriced because part of the proceeds go to breast cancer research) is under $100.

See Jordan, pince-nez were for a softer, more elegant time when you didn't need to run for the bus or you weren't at risk of having them accidentally pushed off your nose in a crowd. Plus imagine sneezing in them. They'd fly straight off your face, I bet. And if they did fall off you could say 'excuse me, good fellow, could you just pop down and locate my glasses for me, the little buggers seem to have come right off my face,' but if that happened now you'd get out a startled "whuh-" before someone stepped on them, laughed and said "haha whoops sorry dude."
Although if you had a pair especially for reading a book in your favourite chair in the late afternoon that would be cool.

The big oversized thick black frames thing makes me want to buy a gun.

I hate guns and I'm virtually a pacifist but frankly I think it's reached the stage where even a rational man can claim to have been driven to it by now.

How dare you!

all those people look absurd, really. Thefirst girl is quite pretty but she would look really pretty without them as well. In any case, wayfarers are a thing that is overdone and most people should refrain.

Did you get new frames, or do you still have the same brown Wayfarers as me?

I am an idiot, 5150 totally ≠ Wayfarers

big frames are really nice on a few select people, i think. it's just a matter of whether or not you've chosen a specific style that actually suits your face, just like any other glasses.

if five minutes from now you asked me to describe the glasses that every single one of these people were wearing i honestly wouldn't be able to tell you, the only thing i'd probably be able to recall is that they were all pretty good looking people. to me that's a sign that you're wearing the right glasses - they should compliment your face and become a seamless part of your overall appearance but not stick out like a sore thumb and be the only thing people notice about you. if you are a person who truly looks good in big  frames, then go for it - nobody is going to pay attention to what your glasses actually look like anyway, all they're going to see is a good looking person. if they don't look good on you, then obviously don't wear them because the only thing people are going to be able to see when they look at your face are your big tacky glasses and how dumb you look in them. be aware though that very, very few people fit into the former category and if you're not 100% positive you are one of them, assume you are in the latter.

if on the other hand i missed the point entirely and we're just talking about shit like this -

then yeah this is absolutely unforgivable no matter who you are and you should probably be fined or given a prison sentence or something

The girl in the picture third down kind of has the glasses that I've been looking at.

I'm frustrated because the person that I started seeing basically has the exact frames I want and I can't wear the same glasses as them because matching couples can suck my dick.

I dunno, I think most of those frames would benefit from being just a shade smaller. The third pic looks the best but I think it could be in part because she's rocking a myspace angle and the glasses very well may look worse head on. This topic is hard on me because I'm very pro plain black frames but against oversized glasses.

But see this isn't even my life anyway. I live in a tiny town where I leisurely stroll to any destination without cares or worries and my current aspiration is to be a librarian here.
