Oh man I just realised that post could read like I was saying that was a bad thing. If you know me well you'd know I'd never mean that.

Anyway Fashion Thread here is the Unbelievably Expensive Bag I just bought. Feel free to complement me on my good taste and rugged manliness:

The thing has an honest-to-dog 100 year warranty. If a rivet pops out of this sucker while my grandson is carting it around, he can send it back and get a new one. No kidding.

It's there to up the "rugged" quotient, duh.

So anyway I just cam across a clothing label called "Hood Prep" and the logo looks like this

Imagine my dismay when it turns out name+logo are wildly unrepresentative of the clothing. Such opportunity, wasted.

Fuck Ralph Lauren Forever

For what? For making clothing for people who look like they own yachts for the last four and a half decades?

Yeah those are stupid but if you haven't noticed, the majority of haute couture fashion looks fucking ridiculous. Have you ever seen a runway show? Not even half of that stuff will ever make it to a department store and I guarantee you the paisley tie won't be part of that stuff.

Also jesus why the massively overkill bag? I mean, it's a nice bag but is there a legitimate reason anyone would spend $500 on it?

I dunno, I like change! I understand buying a quality bag but if I spent over $500 on one, particularly one with a 100 year warranty, I would never again feel justified in buying a new bag. I enjoy the process of switching things like bags and coats and breaking new ones in every year or two.

It is a snazzy bag, I'll admit.

The look of straight down to business on that capybara's face strikes terror into my heart.

It is a gorgeous bag but yeah, seems too expensive for what it is. I am thinking of maybe trying to start making things like bags, or mucking about with cutting up t-shirts to looks different, but the thing is they will all take forever because I will be sewing by hand. Still would be kinda fun, though.

I am happy with my Timbuk2 bag. It has a pretty good warranty (granted, not a 100 year one) and was less than $100. But while I wouldn't be able to get one, that bag is pretty dang sweet, Dovey.

Also, that is definitely the best capybara picture yet.

Hey....

I need boots. Its a difficult task finding boots for a lady with calf muscles as large as mine. 90% of the time everything fits except for the parts that cover my calf muscles. I blame a childhood spent on the tips of my toes, which whenever I am lacking shoes I am still on the tips of my toes.

Any idea where I could get some good boots that would fit, and that will not kill my bank account?

I have the same problem, which is why I only ever get mid-calf boots. I got my boots at Macy's and they've got a toooon of boots that are priced well and DSW has a good selection, too.

naturalizer has a lot of wide shaft leather boots available and they also have a big sale right now, you should be able to find a good pair for under $100 no problem.

I have seen almost all of this stuff in stores. I copied the pictures from Ralph Lauren's website, from the Purple Label and Polo collections, both ready-to-wear. Do Ralph even do couture?

I am willing to give haute couture the benefit of the doubt but this is not.

I figure I could do that or spend $200 on a similar-ish leather bag that'll probably die on me in a year or two. And then again, and then again. I'm planning on doing the same thing with shoes next time I have to buy some everyday hard-wear shoes because I'm getting sick of shoes falling apart on me. I agree with you on how it is nice th have change in some things but on the other hand there are some things that will never go out of style, and that will never not make sense to own. Black close-laced shoes, a rugged briefcase, your watch, a dark grey two-button suit. You will be wearing these things for the rest of your life, so you might as well get it right the first time. Hell, I may be 23 but I'm still kind of intrigued by the heirloom qualities of some of these things as well.

Also, I am going travelling soon, and I basically need something that I can use as a carry-on and also just carry around on me when I am walking around in strange places. I will be travelling in N. & S. America for a year at least, and then after that it seems likely that I will be going to Europe, then Asia and so on and on and on. This bag is going to take a beating, and I do not want it falling apart on me.

Katie I like the first one, particularly since if you're dancing you might want to go for slighlty lower heels than #2 (if this isn't a consideration then #2 is awesome as well). I don't think that shade of orange is really your colour, although it could be the light.

Also those green spectators are not really any lower than the others, they just have slightly chunkier heels.

I was looking at the angle your feet made in them; there isn't much in it.

Red is better, but I still prefer the first two because that skirt is awesome! And going for colours instead of black is almost always a good choice.

Yeah, I color-fixed the first set to be as close as possible to the colour I know the shoes to be, and obviously the black didn't matter, but it was a lot harder with the red dress.

Ok thanks guys! I will go with the green I guess, on account of those are my favourite shoes.

Dear Fashion Thread;

So yeah, about these shoes. At the moment I am rocking some Vans lo-tops as my everyday shoe but there is a hole where my big toe is and it is getting bigger all of the time. I've only had these for 3 months. I seem to go through sneakers at a frankly ridiculous rate and if I was less prepared to wear them right up to when they are literally falling apart they would b going even faster.

So because of the seeming unreliabilty issues and the fact that my personal brand is gravitating away from it anyway I have decided to give up on sneakers as my everyday shoe. So I am basically looking for a leather or suede shoe or boot that I can wear to work and is reasonably nice but that will also withstand a fair bit of a beating, as I walk a lot of places and tend to go offroad some amount. I am highly amenable to chukka boots or desert boots but lo-tops can do fine as well.

I'm cool with spending some decent amount of money but don't be ridiculous, and keep in mind that I live in Australia so I need to actually be able to get the shoes to me somehow.

Have at it, Internet servants.

Re suede shoes, I bought these:

And they were a bit uncomfortable at first, but now they are ridiculously comfortable, moccasin style.

Also, the red is a good red, and they look really good with my jeans (oh, also, Uniqlo makes crazy nice fitting jeans).

So yeah, I'm happy.

I like the first pair, actually. They look like Vans gone moccasin.

And I had the same problem with my authentics and sort of the slip ons, but not nearly as fast. I had my slip ons for over a year before they got holes and the authentics only lasted about 6 months. Is there any way to reinforce the toes on those? I really liked the authentics and want another pair, but not if they're going to keep getting holes really fast.

Those have to be the most boring shoes I've seen in my life, Kieffer.

You're an idiot. They're classic, a little dressy, suede, super fucking comfortable, durable, and they fill every roll he asked for.

I'm finna get a pair in the beeswax leather as soon as I can afford them.

We're not questioning my idiocy here. That's what the guitar thread's for.

Desert boots look really nice in dark brown suede as well as the beeswax leather. Sucks that they are kind of narrow fitting or I would probably own a pair.

I have owned Pumas since I was 20.  I guess I am becoming a mid-twenty something now, though.  Still, they're super comfortable and look good with casual stuff.  However, they are not good for looking a bit less casual.  I will need to do that some day when I am no longer a graduate student.  Fortunately, that will also be when I start making real person money.

hughlhl I want all of the stuff on the Uniqlo site. I wonder if there's anyone in Australia what stocks them

It is weird doing research and coming across a lot of hype for Clarks boots because Clarks to me has always been the company that makes the shitty clunky round-toed shoes that little kids wore to private school
