Shooting for those people has nothing to do with aggression. It is just another social activity. They go out, shoot a few birds (just so long as it doesn't take much work) and then retire to the club lounge to have a drink and talk about the morning hunt. I have played gigs for those people so many times (they're the only people who can afford a band for regular old parties), and I hate the whole lot of them.

Alex: People that live where it is extremely difficult to get a shotgun with a capacity higher than 3 rounds, so they figure why not use a double-barrel? Seems odd that it isn't an over/under, though. For some reason that is what is stuck in my head when I think fancy overpriced over-engraved European shotguns.

If you're actually Scottish and wearing your family tartan for a formal event, cool. If you work at a place where your uniform requires a kilt, ok fine. (There's a restaurant here that does.) Any other reason is a bit silly.

Well, Sean Connery is (dashingly) Scottish. Liam Neeson is Irish, but playing a Scottsman (dashingly so). The hikers are probably Scottish, or at least in the UK from looking at the landscape, the couple is in formal attire (though her dress is a bit silly, the dude looks good), and that last dude is Swiss, but metal as fuck. (I would not mess with a metal dude in a kilt, would you?)

But yeah, none of them, minus the last one sort of, are mixing those with "contemporary" clothes, like t-shirts and sneakers. The hikers are wearing sweaters and both the hikers are the metal dude are wearing boots. You picked really good examples. It's the ones that wear kilts with casual, everyday things that don't look good. I mean, the dudes at the restaurant down the street from my store wear kilts with t-shirts, but they have on the socks and appropriate shoes, so they don't look as silly.

Perhaps it's just cultural brainwashing at work, but... I was about to say that all those pictures of kilts looked a bit silly. I mean, Liam Neeson looks ready to kick ass but the rest... I can't help but think that though they all look fine, they would look even better in a nice suit or some slacks. The metal guy just looks like he bought a pleated skirt and stuck some rivets in it, though I wouldn't say that to his face.

I second the second-hand shop suggestion — I got a black one for about €6 last year. Although women's clothes are admittedly more plentiful in shops like that... or at least better quality. All the men's clothes just look like someone died in them.

Because they probably did. 99% of all men's clothing at second-hand shops are absolutely terrible and nobody would ever wear them except as a last resort. However, sometimes you'll find something that doesn't blow. Consignment shops are slightly better, but be prepared to find nothing that you want most of the time you go.

I have decent success with men's clothes at thrift stores, but I'm patient. I found a leather jacket for $9, several band shirts for less than $3, camo pants and jacket that would cost $80 elsewhere for $18, and lots and lots of cargo pants for <$5. Ties are hell to find, though. I needed a tie for a funeral (all I had were clip-ons, since I hadn't been to anything fancy in years) and I had to go to four different places just to find a simple subdued tie. Mostly you find the ones that people get as gifts for Christmas and then claim to lose.

Yeah, I have a few items from consignment stores. Emphasis on "a few." I only have them because I used to live next to one, so I would stop in for 5 minutes a couple times a week once I finished work, and even then I probably only bought a half dozen things over the span of a year. I can't imagine using such places for anything more than supplementing my wardrobe, but then, I live in a pretty small town.

Exactly my point. There is a small amount of stuff at thrift/consignment stores, but most of the time there's not. I once found a tux there that paid for itself within the year, even with the repairs and alterations that I had to get done (whoever owned it before me had not taken good care of it). However, most of the time I go to thrift/consignment stores, I leave empty-handed.

you can tie a scarf any which way. i tend to do the fold it over and pull it through thing because that's the warmest, but I'll often tie it like an ascot. i have a peacoat and i tuck in the ends, which i think looks pretty good. there's nothing stopping you from using any old knot (or not knot it at all), or from tying it like a tie or a cravat either. which one you choose would depend on how cold you are, the type and length of scarf, what your coat is like...
