on thrift stores: they are not like regular stores. you need to spend at least an hour to really find anything worth wearing. things also may not be your size. you can stop in to an H&M, find a cute skirt and two shirts, try them on in different sizes and then buy a shirt and some stockings... but with a thrift store, you have to grab everything that looks remotely interesting and then try it on to see what suits you. sometimes I actually get a little weirded out thinking about what other people might have done in my clothing but then I get over it because hey, 2 dollars for a shirt that originally cost 40? soooounds good. bonus is that you don't have to worry about seeing your clothing on other people (and when you go to a school where half the girls look like they shop exclusively at urban outfitters, this is a concern). double bonus is sometimes you end up with sweet shoulder pads.

although I think it's true of fashion in general, not just with thrift stores - it takes a lot of time to look good. no shortcuts. bummer cause I'm lazy.

An hour and you've work your way through all sizes and all items of clothing in the men's department at most thrift stores. The smaller ones only take a half hour. An examination of my size at thrift stores tends to take about 10 minutes, and that's looking at shirts, slacks, suits, jackets, everything. Most of the time there really is nothing. Though, most of the time I go into a normal store, I walk out with nothing, which is why I go into them whenever I'm near a store whose clothes I tend to like.

My favorite thrift store closed a while back but recently reopened, so I'm going to have to check it out sometime soon. Sad thing is, it doesn't have dressing rooms, but hey, that's why you just try on shirts, dresses, and skirts on in the isle. Pants I never seem to find anyways, so I don't really have to worry about that.

And hot damn that knot is awesome and I am TOTALLY trying that out on my longer scarves. I am really tired with the loop thing (and I don't really like how it sits when I'm wearing it tucked into my coat) and wrapping them around my neck a few times doesn't always look that good. I think that may be why I prefer square scarves...

so, im having a dilemma here. idk what to wear for a cold winter. it gets to be about -20 F regularly in the winter here... idk wtf to wear in that. i have a decent parka, but i don't like how it looks so much.

first, how warm are winter pea-coats? i wouldn't think they'd be warm enough for that kind of weather considering they seem to give little wind-protection.

i kind of feel like layering. so if pea-coats are a no i'll probably invest in a leatherjacket and go: thermal>flannel>hoodie>leather-jacket

This is how I wear a scarf. I knit myself a scarf, it is a broad simple long thing, I wrap it around my neck and face several times with each layer overlapping the previous layer by about half the scarf's width. It keeps me secure when it is forty below.

I live in ND. What I wear is a peacoat most of the time with lots of layers. I don't go crazy, just a regular tee with a hoodie over it with my coat and scarf, mittens, and hat. If it's really cold, or if I'm planning on doing outdoor activities (snowmobiling, extended snowman making activities, walking from the door to the car to work when the news says you will die if you're outside unprotected for six minutes) I have a columbia coat pretty much like this one. I also have a winter survival kit in my car with snowboots and snowpants, a blanket, flashers, flags, jumper cables, a tow rope and a flaregun. And matches and candles and food (m&ms and trail mix). I recommend them all.

oh oh oh question for you then, mr slick. how do you keep the icicles away when you have it like that? I've never figured that out. Is there a way?

All I can say is that I've never had a problem with icicles? Perhaps it is a function of the differences in humidity between southwestern Ontario and North Dakota. Sometimes it gets a bit frosty where I'm breathing through it, but I've never had serious problems.

I can't believe no-one commented on how awesome the yellow shoes on the last page are. Calenlass, you have awesome taste in shoes.

Speaking of shoes, I am getting these boots for my birthday. I will wear them with trousers and jeans easily enough but my question is what kind of skirt should I wear with them? I am going on a shopping trip on Tuesday and would like to find something that goes.

I would wear them with any sort of skirt, especially a knee/calf length gypsy skirt with browny or greeny or dusty pink or deep blue tones. And longer and it'll cut you off at the ankles and make them look thick, which is what the boots are trying hard to not do!
Some charcoal tights would work awesomely to make that length skirt a little more autumn-ish.

Have i mentioned how jealous I am of those boots?

The first time I came to visit Rochester (to see if I wanted to come to U of R, and also because it was a free trip), I forgot that there was snow. As such, I was wearing my suede Pumas (I wanted to find a picture, but apparently Puma does not sell okay shoes any more), and I got soaked through. It was pretty bad. When other schools flew me out to visit, I rather more intelligently brought my boots.

I'm kind of bummed out now. I used to have a pair of ancient suede red wings that I got from a thrift store, but they were a fire casualty. Those boots were built like a tank, which was sort of surprising since suede is generally pretty thin.

I figure they're worth it. I think most other sunglasses look dumb, and besides, they have good clear vision and I think they're polarised or sun protecty or something. And they're well made. And completely classic in style.

I guess I don't have any conception of how much fashionable sunglasses are supposed to cost, since I don't really have that luxury (I wear glasses for my horrifically bad vision). I would not wear those sunglasses whether or not I had to go with the cheapest frames that look halfway decent or not. Then, I wouldn't wear most of the things that people on this board wear, and they do kind of fit in with lots of the boarders' style.

As much as I like those boots, Jimmy (although I would like ones a bit lower), they are too bulky for some occasions. I'm currently loving my pair of these. Just slip the laces off the ankle-level hooks and you have as much flexibility as you need. I would probably prefer some leather ones like these for when I want to look presentable, but these are lighter than my sneakers, have a smaller toe than my sneakers (for driving and climbing), and have way better ankle support than my sneakers.

Does anybody know a good variety of vegan shoe that's appropriate for office wear and has a good grip? My normal practice of buying second hand leather shoes appears to have been ill-advised, as I overestimated the grip on the soles.

I had a pair of their trainers before and they were pretty decent and long lasting, I'm just a bit wary of the grip on the office shoes they sell.
