Jacob I would actually recommend that you start small, and you start with hand-sewing. Buttons are the best for this, because they always fall off. When you can sew a neat button (shouldn't take you more than, oh, half an hour to figure it out, since there are a few ways to do it), then move on to bigger things.

ALSO: Mom bought me this jacket for Christmas.

It was on eBay for $69 instead of $100 and I am in love with it. It came today but she's not letting me wear it until Christmas.

I found a jacket, it's pretty nice. I'm not sure if it's a girls jacket or not because it has a really big collar. It doesn't smell like a girl though.

The zipper 'handle' and outside flaps of the buttons are on the left on boys shirts and right on girls clothes. (not 100% on the zipper part, but sure about the button part).

I found this out by accident while buying a girls shirt at Value Village.

Guys & girls jackets button up on opposite sides! Try the other gender's blazers on and it will feel weird! Some people will tell you that this has something to do with the egyptians and how women had to button up mens jackets for them but really it is just another tool of the patriarchy trying to keep you from feeling comfortable expressing altered-sexuality.

That doesn't make any sense, as mens' buttons are on the right, making it easier for them to button up their own jackets, not for other people to button it up. Not to mention that modern clothing has no real ancestry in Egypt.

The commonly accepted explanation is that back in ye olde England, men buttoned up their own clothes (hence why the button is on the right, making it easier to access), and women's clothing was typically buttoned up by a maid (which placed the buttons on the maid's right hand side for easier access, meaning the left to the person wearing the garment).

That's what I've heard as well.

I like that more women's pants/jeans have the right-side-opening now, though, because having pants/jeans have a button on the left side is annoying. I think more than half of my pants at the moment have the buttons on the right, and they're definitely not men's pants. All of my button-down shirts and my blazer have buttons on the left side, though. Can't say I'm a fan.

Uh, I am pretty sure that to have "boy" and "girl" zippers you would have to order them custom from a manufacturer. When you buy zippers in the store to put on clothes yourself, there is only one kind.

But it depends which way the fabric goes. There is only one side from which you can access the zip, and it depends on your gender.

No, I mean, you can just buy a zipper. Then you sew it on the fabric however. If you put it so that it is closed with the tab at the bottom, the side with the tab will be on the left. If you put it so that it is closed with the tab at the top, the side with the tab will be on the right. There isn't really any other variation.

Observe:
a regular zipper
heavy duty zipper
make your own zipper! (I have used this, still only one option)
a hidden zipper!

construction of a zipper. This is a zipper that can completely come apart, like one on a jacket, and not like one in a pair of jeans. Note the part that shows the bottom, the bits where you insert the one side into the other side before you can use the tab to close the zipper. There is only one way this ever goes!

But that's not what people were talking about? They were talking about that there is a difference in men's and women's clothing on which side the buttons are and on which side the thing that usually overlaps a zipper is.

I still don't quite understand what you mean. When you have a pair of jeans, the zip goes vertically with the closed part at the bottom. You can have the flap of material over from the left, or over from the right. It doesn't really make much difference but there's a convention dependent on the gender the jeans are aimed at. I think we might be talking about different things.

It took me way too long to figure out that the second picture was of women, rather than skinny men in nancy clothing. Probably because the first picture also makes me think it is meant for women, for some reason.

Yeah. After looking at it for a minute or two, I noticed that the sweater looks like it is coming down from a bulge above the scope of the picture, which suggests breasts, and then I finished scrolling down and noticed the shoes on the one on the right. Then I was thinking that there was one guy and one girl, and thinking that it was a really bad demonstration of zipper sides, until I noticed that the shoes on the left were heels. I am slow on the uptake.

So guys I'm looking for a new messenger/laptop bag. Preferably leather. I'm tired of the typical nylon and polyester shit.

I really liked that bag Dovey got recently but I don't have $800. Suggestions?

While that is simple and elegant, it is once again polyester.

I'm looking in theory so I don't have a range, but I couldn't justify spending more than $150 on a bag.

There's some inexpensive canvas bags out there aimed at military enthusiasts that can be surprisingly handsome provided that you're comfortable removing and replacing some of the sillier shit that might be on there; for example, one of my friends has a bag that looks pretty nice now that he's removed all the buttons that had "tac ops" stamped onto them.

Also, that kind of thing makes me wonder how frustrating life must be for the designer that gets signed on to do jobs like that. Can you imagine coming in under budget with a great looking bag only to have someone ask "Hey, can you put a crying eagle on that? It'll be awesome."

Funnily enough Gene the guy who runs Saddleback Leather (the place where I got my briefcase) is so confident in his stuff that he's actually set up a links page for his competitors. Maybe you can find something you like from there?

http://www.saddlebackleather.com/10-our-rivals

How do you feel about Ben Sherman? they make some rather nice leather messenger bags that go for about AU$110. I'm not sure how they'd go for durability but from what I can tell they're pretty good in terms of functionality/pockets etc.

http://www.bensherman.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?pageSize=8&storeId=10551&parent_category_rn=19126&categoryId=20564&top=&top_category=19126&langId=-1&catalogId=11551

It probably also has to do with knowing that your fashion sense 20 years from now will likely be nowhere near the same as it currently is (considering his fondness for jean shorts, we can only pray), and not wanting to spend a huge amount on something that you will never have an excuse to replace with something you like better. The bag shouldn't be bad about that (unless you go vegan), since it is rather simple leather in its stylings, no band names, no political statements, not trendy at all, but I can see why he is iffy on buying it. Especially considering that the saddleback bags are at least three times as expensive as his limit. I imagine that a dollar isn't worth quite as much where Gene lives as it is in my part of the country, but $450 is still a hell of a lot of money, especially for a teenager.

Yeah this is the thing, I think I paid about $80 for my current bag, and when I am sick of it/need a new one I'll prob pay about that again for another.  Maybe it'll look similar, maybe not.  I use my bag to carry shit to work in, then I put it down and forget about it until I have to go home.  Each of those trips takes me maybe 30 mins, so like, an hour a day tops I am using it.

All that said though, the first bag in the bunch Gene posted looks really good, and the second would look good to me if the white was maybe brown or a shade of dark grey/charcoal just light enough to differentiate it from the black parts.
