Okay but be realistic. I currently have 3. I don't have a job that requires me to be besuited, and I rarely attend formal occasions. Suits, or at least suits of the caliber I would want to purchase, are gonna be $500+ dollars. I can't buy THAT many. What is actually a reasonable amount to have, how much variety is needed, etc.

I want a 4 button double breasted suit, but that seems like it's a ways off, after like, a gray wool suit for winter, maybe a nice light tan or white linen suit for summers, and I don't even have a blue suit, shit. What's the right order to get them in, what's the most essential to own, etc.

I am not buying a black suit, or if I do it's gonna be thrift stored like a mofo because who wears black suits, really.

So guys, on Sunday I am going on a shopping trip in Charleston with Christmas money. I will be going to Charleston mostly for the Urban Outfitters there. Everything will be half off! Whoo!

I think that dark gray and navy blue are the top priorities. Everything after that is gravy. That being dai, I only have two that fit me right now, and one is navy blue and the other is this olive patterned fabric. All the suits I've ever owned were wool.

Do you realize why this post doesn't work at all? You have given us nothing to go on. You're shopping at Urban Outfitters for shit that's 50% off. That doesn't tell us nearly enough to help you even a little bit with what to tell you to buy.

I suggest giving us some details about the kinds of things your looking for, the holes in your wardrobe you need to fill, the style you're going for, the patterns you like, and hey! maybe even some links to the UO website of items you're already a little interested in so we can make it easier for you!

So you're basically going for suits that you don't need to wear but may, on the odd occasion feel like wearing for the hell of it? Probably start with the blue suit as it's a pretty good basic that you can build on from there. If you're getting a second suit in the next few months I'd go with the summer next, simply because winter is, for you at least, on its way out soon.

Also I wear black suits, albeit my taste in fashion is, to be fair, a bit of an aberration.

On an unrelated note, what are people's thoughts on jeans for short, overweight girls with big thighs? I'm working on losing weight, but I sort of really struggle with finding decent jeans in the meantime. They say boot cut is good if you have big thighs, but when you're short, boot cut becomes really weird, because I have found one single pair of jeans in my entire life that fit me length-wise. I've been wearing straight-legged lately jeans (which end up being relatively tight around the thighs and a bit looser around the leg/shins), and I sort of maybe think this is what looks best, but people have said that straight legged jeans on heavy girls is a no-no, so I don't know what to think.

I have a pair of straight legs and they're my favorite pair. They're slightly slimmer on the calves than bootcut and I think they're more flattering as long as they fit nicely on the hips and thighs. Just don't wear flares, they tend to make wide hips look even wider.

Tommy, I like them in the summer, especially if they're linen.

God, yes, flared jeans make me feel like I am drowning in denim. I also like the fact that the straight legged jeans are slimmer on the calves than bootcut, and they look slightly less awkward when they're a bit too long, which is a plus when you're 5'3".

The second suit is a pretty light color, actually, the lights just bad. I want a lighter one for sure.

Ladybug, I've never been an overweight short girl, but straight leg seems your best bet. Slim will look weird, and hang awkwardly if your thighs are substantially bigger. Bootcut/flared jeans don't seem like a bad idea for you, but I personally hate them for me. Hypothetically, I feel like the flare will draw attention away from where the pants fit you too closely, like the thighs, by being hella loose in the calf/ankle, but I really can't say for sure, since again, I have no experience.

I think that's sort of the theory behind lots of people saying that it works, but imo, it often just makes the entire leg look huge, except maybe the knee. I've seen it work on people who are of pretty average size, but have sort of wide thighs, but then there's overweight with wide thighs, and I'm less sure about that. And ones legs already look shorter with big thighs, so adding flared legs will just make them look even shorter, I think? Hm, I'm pretty sure the best solution to this is to not make up tons of excuses come January, and actually start to make some progress on the weight loss again.

I forgot to say so, but that second suit is pretty excellent.

Bootcut/flare jeans will tend to balance out larger thighs/wider hips but you're better off sticking to the bootcut end of that spectrum as flares are going to look really really odd if you have a wider middle. I'm fairly heavy myself (though obviously not a lady) and I will always go for bootcut jeans over anything else because they tend to have a more flattering shape. If the jeans are too long, you can always just get them taken up (or do it yourself!), it costs like $8 at the local alterations place here.

Really, I think bootcut is probably the most flattering cut on just about any body type. Also it depends on the length of the shirt you're wearing. Slimmer pants look better with tunics/longer shirts while shorter shirts should probably go with bootcut/straight.

Bootcut looks pretty alright on me, and I'm sorta tall and very skinny. Straight legged looks better on me though.

I would go for a jean that was tight up to the knee, then then slim but not snug from the knee to the ankle. If a straight leg jean works in that respect, go for it. You should get one you can hem to make shorter, and the best type of jeans for hemming are straight-leg. Definitely no flares but some boot-cuts are better than others.

I think you have the right idea, I wouldn't base my opinion on what the 'rule' is. You should post a picture of your straight-leg jeans.

I think I have to agree on bootcut not (usually - can't think of a single case I've seen) looking good on tall, skinny guys.

About hemming jeans that are too long… I can usually hem dress pants and stuff like that relatively okay by hand, but jeans are a bit trickier -- and the cheapest tailor I've found wants about $20 to do it, which sucks when living (mostly) off of a student loan. I'm much more likely to cuff jeans than hem them, simply because I don't like how jeans look when they've been hemmed with sub-par sowing skills/equipment. Cuffs don't always look good on short people either (not very often at all, actually, as they cut off the legs, sort of), but if the choice is between something not looking good, but requiring effort, and something not looking good with pretty much no effort at all, I'll go with the latter. The more flared leg, the more difficult to hem or cuff properly as well, so yeah, one more point for straight legged jeans.

As for pics, maybe when it's not 04:25AM, unless I forget :/

ETA: Scratch that, I'm past tired anyways. Current favorite pairs of jeans:

I actually wish the lighter ones were an inch longer (letting my mom hem jeans stopped being a good idea a while back...) and perhaps a bit wider in the leg, but the overall cut I prefer shows pretty well in these. Decent or not?

They both look decent but i like the ones on the left better. Darker colours and no bleach marks are better. Also I don't like whiskers like on the on the right. I think those cuffs look fine on you! I think it's because they're are well proportioned.

The ones on the right have faded pretty heavily due to being worn a lot (though the flash sort of exaggerates it), they used to be a lot darker, with less evident fades and almost no whiskers, so I definitely get what you're saying - I especially don't like how they sort of stop the fade almost mid-calf. But fit-wise and comfort-wise they're favorites, exactly because they've been worn a lot.

Thanks for the input! I'm pretty sure I'll try to look for one more pair with a similar fit to the ones on the left, and just ignore people and their overly general rules.

The fades that form on the upper thigh of a pair of jeans from wear, referred to as whiskers for obvious reasons.

The fades on the backs of knees are known as honeycombs. I dunno what the ones on the ankles are called, but I wanna say stacking.

If you actually want to wear three types of denim at the same time, conventional wisdom is that the pants should be lighter than the shirt. If you're wearing a jacket as well, I'd say lighter shirt, dark jeans and jacket, but that's just me. Basically look like this.

Also, I'd try to wear chambray instead of denim for the shirt, it'll make the whole thing work a little better.

I suppose your suggestion does make sense. I was thinking, you post things that you like and I will look at them and see whether or not I like them because you might like things that I don't know that I like.

Being short and overweight and a girl, I find that bootcut does a pretty good job of slimming. Especially if you've got thicker thighs, and wide hips. The slight flare of the bootcuts sort of balance things out. Of course, if you over do the flare, as in flare legged jeans, they make you look awkward and heavy. It's really all about how your body is shaped. I've found that straight legs don't look horrible on me, but skinny jeans make me look like a long legged version of Mr. Krabs. Straight legs don't look spectacular but they look fine enough. But bootcut is the best, I think.

If you've got a butt, then I highly recommend Old Navy's diva bootcut pants. They are low enough that they hug around the top of your butt and don't show your crack, and they compliment the roundness of your rump too. I've gotten so many compliments when I wear these pants, an my boyfriend completely loves them.

Cuffs are totally fine and darker colors are the way to go!(I think anyway)

On guys, I do think that bootcut looks silly on skinny dudes, unless you are actually wearing boots. On chubby guys, like girls, it sort of balances things out. Straight legs also look good on chubby dudes due to the lack of hips.

To be fair, it's okay to only do up the bottom button of a double breasted suit sometimes, as it makes you look taller/minimizes width but it often looks a little silly, unless you've got a well made bespoke suit. I'd go with the classic top two combination.

Also, all double breasted jackets have peaked lapels.
