I'm going to northern GA this week, so I'm pre-emptively sympathizing with the heat issues. I bought two new pairs of shorts for the trip, and I normally hate shorts. I just don't want to have to go through two sets of clothes every day, and I would if I wore what I normally do in that heat.

I have been surviving the summer with tank tops, very light weight skirts, and shorts/cutoffs (all my shorts are just above knee length). So far I have been doing well minus those days where it's so humid you walk outside and immediately feel like you want to die. In which case I stay inside. I've worn pants a few days and it's just not worth it. I just want it to be fall already!

I have an interview this Friday for a position as an office administrator with a large solar installation company. Seeing how I really really want this job and have never been to a very formal-dress interview, I could use some help. I need something that is fancyish, not too tight/baggy, and will not reduce me to a rumpled puddle of sweat by the time I make the 40 minute drive in my non-air conditioned car. This is what I've come up with.

So apparently I'm going to a wedding in October, on the 10th. I don't own a suit and/or a tie. what should I do?

Is it okay to wear slacks and a button down shirt with no tie to a wedding?

The answer to both these situations is "wear a suit."

Google "what to wear to a job interview for women" and you will see the advice is pretty much universal. Conservatively coloured suit, coordinated blouse. Skirt to the knee or maybe a bit above, but no higher. The dress in question looks nice to go out in, but it does not project professionalism at all. No offence, but if I saw someone dressed like that I wouldn't even think "she's dressed for (office) work," let alone "she's dressed for a job interview."

Guys should wear suits & ties to weddings unless they know that dress will be more casual. SW says he doesn't have a suit, and is broke, so the solution is: call the person who invited you and explain the situation. Ask what you should wear. If the answer is still "a suit" -- depending on where you live, suits can be rented (but this may be out of your price range). And yes, absolutely, wear a tie. Borrow one from a male friend.

Good luck both of you!

See though, I feel like the problem with googling something like that is it pulls up articles and people all describing interviewees for one certain type of job. Obviously you should follow the "conservative suit, pantyhose, closed toe shoes and for godsake straighten your hair you heathen" diatribe if you're applying to be a senior accountant or the CEO of Houghton Mifflin or something, but what about every other job?
I interviewed applicants for an internship with a small environmental advocacy group, and if someone had shown up in CEO wear, it would have been super weird. What about for a factory job, or a creative job. It's really not so cut-and-dry as all that. I wore the dress, with the cardigan. I don't think they minded. I did buy some lower heeled shoes though, because those felt a bit too fancy.

The interviews I've been to I wear black jeans, boots, a button-down shirt and a black leather jacket. This has been for retail jobs, call centre jobs and one job as a data analyst. I got all of them (I even had dreadlocks for the data analyst one)

First off, I hope you get the job!

The standards that you'll find from that Google search apply more broadly than you might think. I take your point that if you are showing up to a job interview to be a server at a restaurant, or a ditch digger, or a community activist, the standard is not necessarily "conservative suit." But the concept of "wear a suit to an interview" applies much more widely than just for managerial positions and CEOs.

I agree that context does matter. If you know that everyone in the office sits around in shorts and a T-shirt then yeah, a full-out formal suit might not be as appropriate for an interview. But one rule of thumb that is useful for any job is: dress better for the interview than you would normally dress on the job.

I recommended a suit because you said things like "office administrator," "large ... company," and "very formal-dress interview." Like other people have said, it's usually worse to be dressed too casually than it is to be dressed too formally. And if you show up wearing a suit and, to your horror, you've overdressed, you can at least take off the jacket (and if you're a guy, take off the tie). If you're underdressed, you're kind of screwed.

If in any doubt, dress up.

Raw denim jeans will never, ever, EVER fail you. You can do your interview, make a good impression in any context (but not TOO good, as you guys both mentioned), and then afterward you can go to a party and keep on rocking.

This got me a standing "We call you whenever somebody wants music and hasn't already booked someone" gig at a winery and a steady gig at a restaurant, and also admission into college.

Yeah, "peaches", that's what they call them over there, don't they?

Seriously, though, because my grandfather lives in Atlanta, has for all of his life, and doesn't like traveling. Otherwise we would be going to New York, where my uncle has a house, and it would be much cooler. I like visiting Atlanta in the spring or fall, the weather is great compared to CO then. I think the winters are nicer too, I personally find around 40 degrees and damp to be more pleasant than <20 degrees and dry, but I hate going in the summer. I'll probably be staying in the house most of the time.

Yeah Kieffer, it's very dykey. It got cut like that so it'd grow out more evenly, which it has and looks much better. On the plus side it helps that I spend most of my time kissing a partner that is pretty dykey.

Guys seriously, fuck the summer. I want to wear a god damn hat.

Ok so I've looked around and I can't get those glasses I posted above. The place that makes them in LA is this ridiculous boutique that makes all their glasses by hand and they're stupid expensive and not available outside of the US.
I can, however, get these glasses. They are pretty similar and fairly awesome. The black arms don't bother me none because I have long hair anyway but I only wish the frames were a little less transparent and a bit more frosted. Still, I know where I can get these and they aren't too expensive.

man thanks to sam linking them a couple of weeks back i am now totally stupid obsessed with warby parker and their lovely frames and insanely low prices. i have been telling literally everyone. i just wish they shipped to canada!

i am going to be ordering a pair of glasses in the next couple of days and am now trying to make a final decision between these or these. i'm probably gonna go with the first option cos as much as i love geeky angular shapes, the slight cat eye shape of the first pair gives them a bit more of a feminine look (i think) and i really probably don't need to look more like a nerd/dude than i already do. i am so excited oh boy oh man never have i been more happy to have lost my stupid overpriced glasses a year ago than i am, right now

oh i just meant the way that at the top, the frame curves slightly inwards at the middle where the bridge of the nose is and upwards at the edges (as opposed to straight across, like these). cat eye is probably not the right word. is there a word for the thing i just described? i don't know. i really like big blocky geek glasses but unfortunately i don't seem to be able to ever wear them no matter how good they look on the models because they always just make me look and feel like a big unibrow.

Whenever I get around to getting another prescription, I think I'm going to be ordering from here. I have a few friends who have gotten glasses from here that were raving about it and they are WAYWAYWAY inexpensive. Also, they've got some really fun frames and since they're so inexpensive, I can order a few pairs.

did you read the buyer feedback on any of them? i'm probably going to buy some stuff from there in the next month or so as well, but i've been told by people who have bought from modcloth that reading the feedback on any item you buy is absolutely crucial as modcloth frequently has items that look really nice on the website but end up actually being really flimsy and poorly made in person. those all look lovely though, especially the middle dress in the bottom row. hopefully you won't have that problem with any of them.

I just bought some bedsheets from modcloth and they are absolutely gorgeous if that helps. I wish I could afford their clothes but if I really want a nice vintagey dress it is much cheaper to go out and buy from from the multiple vintage shops around here.

I did actually. I was reading the reviews rather than the item description. I think that buyer submitted feedback is incredibly important for online shopping. Most of those had great reviews. The coat had a few people complaining about how they thought it was brown but it's actually black (looks black to me!) and that it had the pockets stitched up (which most coats tend to have that, you just unpick one stitch and it should unravel).

Some of the dresses people said they were a bit flimsy in terms of material and maybe a bit big in the bust area (which is easily fixed really). I don't mind if they are a really light material because it is stupidly hot in summer and the less material the better.

Overall, if they get here and don't fit or are terrible, I'll return them (they do free returns/exchanges I believe).

And thanks everyone! The boyfriend also approves once he got over the fact that all of that was about $440AU ($380US) including shipping. I've never spent that much online shopping before, so I do hope they fit properly.

I am going to try to get an eye exam done sometime within the next week so I can get new glasses and I'm thinking of ordering these:

They're $30 for a complete pair, which is a great price, and it means I'll be able to see. And I'll probably order some other pairs later as well, but I am just very tired of my glasses. They keep falling off and there's a scratch on one lens and that's not cool.

I know.

Dude, I know.

I wear my wife's pants sometimes and man. What the hell. Comfy and light. Except for the lack of pocket space.

What's up ladies. Get some real pockets.

Dang, the skinniest jeans I own have the biggest deepest pockets. I own regular cut jeans that have impossibly tiny pockets though, my lipgloss and phone are always falling out.

So my dad has offered to blow me to a pair of Red Wings before I go to Europe, which I am obviously not going to turn down. The question is, do I want the 875 or the 899? The 899 is steezy as fuck but if I'ma be walking in them like hella maybe I want the 6 inch not the 8 inch boot? Also apparently you can get the 875 with lug soles instead of the crepe wedge, which I feel like would be superior, but I dunno if I've ever seen em. Obviously either pair is gonna be fly as fucc, just looking for some feedback.

Pictures follow.

So when I asked which pair I should get you decided the most helpful advice was to tell me you wouldn't wear either of them? I am missing the logic there.

But I guess they aren't made by Vans...
