Er, wow?  I don't know if I can respond usefully straight off; but to make you smile briefly, and to make you feel a mite less alone, have a poem by Larkin.

For me, I have been living in non-stop Black Flag time since 1984 when they played the very first show I ever went to.  I highly recommend it.

I have Black Flag ink
I named one of my children after one of the band members
I have even met Henry's mom*

It is always Black Flag time.   Also, it is simultaneously always Bad Brains time.

guys sorry i'm still a downer but i just feel like even the power of henry rollins won't be able to help. i don't even want to listen to any music at all for once in my life. please please talk to me and keep me distracted. just maybe here or twitter i dunno. maybe add me on facebook if you care enough. show me pretty things (written or visual), make some corny jokes, etc etc. not really up for discussing my problems per se. it feels too soon for that but it's theoretically nice and oh fuck something else awful might be happening  :|  :|

It's not a pretty thing or a joke, but I have noticed recently that I've been enjoying* silence at times recently. When I was a few years younger I thought I'd always want to listen to some sort of music at all times, but more recently I've found that silence helps you think a little more and study the world around you especially when combined with walking. Also there is that sort of silence that you only get in the countryside that is total and complete and actually scares me a little.

Anyway nobody can be sad when looking at puppies so maybe this will help:

*enjoying is completely the wrong word but I can't think of the right one

thanks for the puppy picture, nufan. i do love them.
your advice isn't too relevant at the moment though. hope i don't sound like a bitch but i don't wanna think about things any more than i already have. i actually just want to do something that will turn my mind off for a bit. like, the first solution that popped into my head was getting high. wtf, since i don't normally partake in that but i feel like it might help me just this one time. but it's irresponsible and i don't want to turn into a stoner just cause things are a bit rough for me. blah.

also, guys leslie wrote to me. i feel a bit more special now. <3

Yeah sorry relevance wasn't necessarily the point, was just a thought that occurred to me lately. I've also been going through a bit of a shit patch myself and all I can really say is that being cooped up in my house is when it gets worse, I feel a lot better having gone out and done something, even something completely useless like shopping.

TV. I find TV brilliant for when I have really bad anxiety. It's passive so you don't have to do anything to keep it going unlike a book and it's much more immersive than music, so if your mind does start running it's easier to slip back into it washing over you. Box sets of things on DVD are good. This is why I've managed to get through a series and a half of The Wire in one sitting, and every episode of Full Metal Alchemist in a few days because they were all streamed online and I had a deadline looming.

I also recommend this. Watch or re-watch any of your favorite shows or movies if possible.  I've found lately that TV shows help. Especially today. It's been helping me keep my mind off the fact that not only is my Mom in the hospital for the night, but I also haven't heard a thing as to whether or not she's getting better. Hopefully it can help you too. I recommend Glee. That show is incredibly cheerful :)

EDIT: Sorry. Bad habit of mine from other forums.

You don't need to quote the post above yours dude. It's cool, we can tell what you're replying to.

Also, Anna (can I call you Anna? Imma do it anyway) my brother has pretty bad test anxiety as well. When he was finishing uni last year he had a conversation with one of his lecturers about it and after he did really badly in the exam (after having aced everything else in the course) his lecturer let him retake the exam as a one-on-one interview type thing and he did really well. Maybe talk to some of your professors and see if they would be willing to make those kind of allowances for you?

Hey Anna, I can't read your post for reasons that I'm gonna blog about, but I skimmed, and read Jimmy's post, and I have this to say: I agree with what Jimmy says about talking to your professors, I think that is an awesome idea. Also, you should see somebody about your anxiety, if you aren't already. Just talking about it helps a great deal, or it did for me, anyway. If it's a cost issue, there are a number of places to go for these sort of things for cheap/free. I know it sounds a bit extreme, but once I was having horrible anxiety, and I called the suicide hotline place, and just talking to them helped. Then they set me up with a place to go for free to just talk to someone a let it out. Also, they had a kitten room, but I'm not sure what was in it, but the door was covered in pictures of kittens! I'm certain that that means they had sooooo many kittens in that room. Kittens for someone to just go play with and round around with and snuggle whenever they felt sad, because that's what kittens are for anyway! So yeah....feel better! Feeling bad is crappy! Try to think of happy things!

I almost had a panic attack today and my brain like shut off and started just forcing happy thoughts on me. Like animals that are very colorful in a white room! And Dark backgrounds mixed with birght shapes. My brain thinks happy thoughts are obscure art, and I guess that is ok. It took my focus off the fact that I could not breathe.

Also, so the reason that I could not read Anna's post is because my head has been killing me today. I am having a hard time reading short articles, my head hurts so bad. I shouldn't be on the computer for this reason(because I'm pretty sure its my eyes, because they are being all shakey and I can't focus on anything and man they hurt), but I also am trying to distract the headache away. I originally thought that I/my boyfriend was crazy thinking it was my eyes, and thought that I was probably just dehydrated because I haven't been drinking as much water lately, but today I've drank a lot, and they are still bothering me a great deal. Thankfully, I see the doctor on Tuesday. But seriously, right now my head hurts so bad that I feel like I might puke.

i agree with that linds. like, having my cat sitting beside me right now is surprisingly helpful.  even though she's not normally uber affectionate towards me.
(also i will respond to all the advice i've received to so far when i'm feeling slightly more coherent. i still don't feel capable of doing much other than internetting more though)
also thanks again for being there for me, internet friends/acquaintances.

Aww, thank you! I am getting off the computer for now. I thought things were getting better, but I just took my dog outside, and he insisted that we run around in circles(sometimes having a herding dog is no good), and I got super dizzy super quickly, and now feel super ill. So it is time to go soak in the tub, and maybe cover my eyes with a cloth.

Dear blag,

Last night I picked up an application to be a mall cop at the mall in Pleasanton. There is a bus that goes there, there's a place on 4th St. here in town where I can get my guard card + training for the job (fee of $250 or some shit, but worth it since I'd be making $10/hour, and I would only have to do it if I for sure had a job offer with these people).

I'd get a uniform and a baton and a taser and I'd get to ride a Segway around the mall all day and make sure people weren't starting shit or stealing shit. And I'd get to check out cute girl-type people from behind a mirrored pair of aviator sunglasses.

I'd do a great fuckin' job but I'd look like Reno 911. That'd be my advantage, people underestimating me. FUCK YEAHHHHH.

Should I seriously do this, guys?

Love,
Me!

HEY! When I have a Panic Attack (TM) the thing I do is listen to the shittiest shit shit music ever. The music that is so bad that it is totally awesome. The music you quote lyrics of to your friends in every day conversations. SONGS LIKE THIS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldoa8QSXe4A

In fact, that is now your theme song even though you're a girl.

brittany marie, did you just give ME a theme song called sexy boy? i kinda love that.
here is one for you that is equally cheesy even though you are not a doctor as far i know but you still made me FEEL GOOD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHP6U5vQ3mU

sorry about the corny compliments. i'm really being sincere in giving them though! i am trying to make myself feel better by trying to show more love in general. it is kind of working. that's really what my main problem was for the longest time. if i had more friends, i probably wouldn't have gotten this overwhelmed by my anxiety in the first place. maybe a shrink isn't really the right thing to be trying to acquire then, huh?

sup positive late night realizations!

thanks patrick! that song is sweet and kinda maybe describes our new friendship, so i'm dedicating it to you also. maybe that doesn't make sense but it does not HAVE to this is not the MUSIC forum.

do we need a random song dedication thread now or am i just being too sappy? also do i need sleep? i don't want it that much yet. but it might be a practical thing to do.

(and oh hey page break, i got lucky)

edit-why yes, i do need sleep because i just realized songs for forumites has been done before. okay. goodnight, friends!
edit #2- so i managed to survive the most two difficult days of my life to date without binge drinking. or weed. high fives all around.

Speaking of insomnia, what is a good way to get to sleep quicker? It always takes me at least an hour and sometimes two, but if I go for an afternoon nap I can fall asleep in ten minutes. What is going on here?

I wish my college had a kitten room. I wish my room was the college's kitten room.

It's always hard to tell through the screen, but I think you're doing the right things to get through this, Anna, and you'll be ok in the long run.

I can definitely relate to your situation because there are a lot of parallels to what happened to me years ago. I downplay it to myself and most people around me don't even know all that happened, but there are effects even years later -- the biggest being that I freeze up whenever I have to go do something "official" cold, because putting it off means I don't have to deal with negative results. Which most of the time is silly because most of the time it's simply picking up some paperwork or asking a simple question, but I'll like hover outside the office for half an hour building up the steam to just go in. Once I'm used to an environment or procedure, I'm fine, and of course 99% of the time there was nothing to worry about in the first place.

On the other hand, I've generally kept an upbeat outlook on things, and when it comes down to it, I can go do the things I need to do. It also had a weirdly positive effect on my retail career because I became so expert at avoiding conflict by not triggering reactions in other people, that with many years experience, I have almost none of the confrontational horror stories that everybody else seems to have happen on a weekly basis.

Anyway, before I start rambling for pages (which I can easily do), I guess the only "advice" I can give is that eventually you'll be in a place in your life where you are in control of it all, and I think one of the important things to start doing now and continue doing later is gather a circle of positive people in your life.

It's only in the last year or so that I've really had that, and it's the kind of thing I never noticed until it was different like this. Earlier in the month, a shoot for my cable access show completely fell apart when I found out the day before that the studio had accidentally double-booked and I was the one who had to change. As the shock set in and I felt completely alone, I braced myself to call everybody to tell them the news, and the overwhelming support I received as I put together an alternative shot date nearly brought me to tears.

I think you have a good start on that kind of thing with the people around here. While we all use this blog thread to post some of our woes, there's also a good balance of people reporting happy news, and enough of the pick-me-up support and silliness that really does help. I've had so many "friends" descend into the blogosphere morass of "my tragic life is worse than yours!" where collecting a large count of sympathy posts seems to be some kind of contact sport.

And because I've used up my quota of seriousness, I'll close with the silly non-sequitur of reporting that there's apparently a sci-fi book called "Doppelgangster". I wonder if it's by the same author as "Vampirates", and what the potential is for other kinds of titles like this.  8-)

As a life long insomniac, my best legal answer is melatonin.

Dirt cheap, get it at the vitamin store, there is no "Ambien-hangover".   Honestly, it's the Best. Stuff. Ever.

Take it about 90 minutes before you think you want to go lay down.   Other hints, lay down even if you aren't tired at a specific time.  In the dark, no t.v., etc.

I agree completely! I love melatonin.

So, tonight, I am baking Jame's tourtiere. I'm pretty excited! And while I'm cooking, I thought I'd fill out some job applications. One asks "When did you fall in love with music?" I really really reaaalllly want to say "Well, when I was a little girl, I was convinced I was going to marry Freddie Mercury." But I doubt that'll get me the job. What should I say?

Emaline, I personally think that would be the perfect answer, something to get a nice conversation going during the interview. Of course, when I applied to a bookstore and there was a line for additional qualifications, I put "alphabet", but didn't get the job... Really depends on the kind of place.

James, the tourtiere is going really well to far. Everything smells delicious. I was reading over the recipe and I realized I didn't have enough butter for the crust, and just then my butter in the kitchenaid started splashing around, meaning it was done. So woo! good timing butter!

Jimor, I will probably end up putting that. And maybe about how I started going to concerts in first grade(woo! Rush!). I'd really like this job, but it seems a bit impossible. It's a tiny local record store, where they are constantly having amazing in-stores, and is in a really neat part of town. So basically, it'd be awesome and great. But I think my chances of getting hired are next to nothing.

Gimp should be able to do it!  Hopefully this will answer your question.  Basically, you want to "transform" (Shift+T) rather than "rotate."

emphasis on free program, unfortunately i have very limited time to work on this thing and trying to pirate this is way too much of a hassle for me.
i will try the transform thing, thanks elizzybeth.
