So apparently my Mum's Melanoma was much better than they expected, and she has a high survival chance.

Look, I understand that not everyone on the board likes Menomena, but I think making their albums into a life or death thing is unnecessary.

Tania I have never been so lucky as to see this alleged "40 hours over 5 days" holy grail you claim exists. Show me a 5 day, 40 hour work week among people in their lower 20s, I'll show you a pig with a pilot's license.

I'm pretty sure you can get one if you have to wear one of those helmets that prevent you from injuring yourself in public.  There is, however, no way that this job will not involve physical contact with somebody's poop.

Oh!  And freelance writer.

Oh wait, that's just someone who surfs the internet all day, carry on.

i just want to have one week where a scheduled day off doesn't inevitably turn into a, oh, uh actually we messed up and you're going to need to come in from open to close, which is what has basically been happening every week for the last... forever. it would be better if they just told me straight up i was going to work ridiculous hours forever and absolutely never going to have a day off again instead of constantly promising them to me and then taking them away the day before. it is charlie brown and the football all over again.

actually why am i complaining i did not even want to do that really, i guess what i am really trying to say is i feel your pain allison and dovey and if you ever want to just do a thing where you sit around and cry together let me know and i will be all up ons

I've worked jobs in which I was expected to work over fifty hours a week on and off for eight years now. When I was in uni I still worked thirty to forty hours a week minimum.

This applies to borderline everyone I know in the UK. I guess it's a little bit different over here.

I'm 23 and I have a 40 hour working week yeaaaaaaaaaaaah Fargo with it's good economy and ND for it's lax laws on banking! I DID, however, have a summer job where I worked 72 hours a week. 12 hours a day for 6 days, it was a lot of overtime.

12 hour workdays with no weekends  means having to give up a social life??  i chose to give up sleep instead.  that's what caffiene is for right?

i miss working 60 hour weeks.  at least then i had money, and i was too busy earning it to spend it.  now i am broke with too much free time on my hands.  that is the worst feeling ever.

the thing is that after i work my ridiculous hours i come home and immediately do what i consider "real work" (i.e., research and graduate school application preparation) until i fall asleep, and giving up sleep to go out and have fun essentially renders me a useless brain dead zombie the next day who is then totally unable to concentrate properly or get any good work done on anything at all which is something absolutely crucial i always need to be able to do with my little free time. my complaining about this situation is pretty stupid in hindsight now that i think about it because i'm in the best position possible to actually have money AND get all the shit done that i need to with my year off. i think i'm just bitter that they took away my day off yesterday again which means i'll be working about 18 or 19 days straight with no days off. grumble

Tania,

I'm not sure about there, but in the U.S. it is illegal to require you to work that many days in a row with no day off. You may want to look into your local labor laws.

Yeah. It's a double-edged sword.

There has to be a way to do it subtly, you know? Maybe next time they ask you to give up your day off just explain that you need it and if they refuse...

I think context is important here.  Some considerations for people who are working or have worked a forty hour week:

-- Did you wear a nametag with your name, or another person's name on it?  Was that name Earl?

-- Did you have a union representative named Tiny?  Was there a tacit understanding that were you to work one minute above forty, Tiny and his friend Earl would break your legs?

-- Did your job have room for advancement to a position that wasn't your existing position with the prefix "Senior" or "Shift"?

-- Was your job "freelance" or "flextime"?  Was "freelance" or "flextime" a euphemism for "Next week, I may be paid in magical beans, or not at all"?

-- Was your job one that you pursued a higher education to specifically avoid?

I'm not saying that there aren't great jobs out there for 40 hours and under.  There are.  But only in certain industries, and rarely with much room for advancement.  Now you might say (and indeed some have said), if you're ambitious and you take the job that means working incessantly without adequate compensation, haven't you done that to yourself?  Why yes you have.  But the internet is the place people go to bitch about things they have done to themselves.  That's what makes it so wonderful.

I've been handing in assignments like mad this week and last week, and we'll be doing different kinds of kid's performances that I really don't want to do this weekend. But it's for money that'll be spent on going to London with the class and watching theatre, so it's a good trade off. But balloon animals and christmas plays and songs isn't really any fun at all.

And people are caring to much about Christmas. It's not that a big deal, it's every year, you know? No reason to go batshit crazy. But nooo. The next time I hear some terrible screeching kid singing Christmas carols live or on CD, I'm flipping out.

We've discussed this.  There's a difference between having worker's rights and having an employer follow those laws.  Sure, things can be done to ensure that your employer will follow those laws, but the net result is that next time you make the tiniest mistake, they are no longer your employer any more.  I am "limited" to 9-5 work weeks in the lab due to safety regulations, but there's a bit of an unspoken agreement that grad students will not follow these rules since grad students are expendable.  Of course, this discounts the time I spend doing work for my classes, which is fairly significant.  Then there's the class I have to TA for, and I'm basically doing the job of two TAs.  Also, there's the three bands I'm playing with because I can't stop playing music or I probably will end up killing myself.  This results in what few hours a month I can actually have a social life are spent trying to remember how to converse.

Yeah, that's awesome, dude.  Congratulations.

So, I was finally able to put my motorcycle inside (there was some crap taking up where I needed to put it which the building maintenance lady was supposed to move on Saturday but she just got around to it today).  It barely fits through the hallway, resulting in me having to pick the back wheel off the ground and slid it around before barely fitting the handlebars through the door.  Now I'm a bit sweaty even though it's hovering around freezing outside.

Also, I called this girl I like on Sunday to find out how she's enjoying her new job and to try to ask her to coffee.  She didn't pick up, nor has she returned my call.  This is the typical result.  Namely, this is the result 100% of the time when I try to call someone and ask her out.  I don't really understand what's so different from me in person versus on the phone.

I am so tired. What the fuck, I got like 9 hours of sleep last night. That is a lot.

Also: cute varsity cheerleader texting me? what?
ALSO: I need two contrasting monologues for a theatre competition. If anyone has ideas, I'd be grateful.

With cake ownership set to C and cake consumption set to K, then C + K = 0.  So indeed as one consumes a cake, one simultaneously deprives oneself of cake ownership.

Yeah, pics or it didn't happen.

I was in a band in high school with a drummer who would make up the setlists (on computers), and they'd always have hand-drawn doodles of stupid shit.  Those were fun, innocent days.  After many years of calling the set on-stage (a setlist for a three hour gig would be kind of long), I am in a band with a guy who prints out setlists in 12 point font.  I tell him, but he doesn't change.
