I'm not sure about there, but in the U.S. it is illegal to require you to work that many days in a row with no day off. You may want to look into your local labor laws.

not when you have three jobs!

like tommy said, it's basically my own fault anyway since i was the one who made the commitment to work at two different shelters in toronto after already finding a full time job in markham. it's good because it gives me lots of experience for the future and i think this is a point in my life where, as much as i complain about my crippling lonliness and constant exhaustion, i sort of need the isolation and busy schedule because i don't have a lot of self control and this is essentially the only way to ensure i'm really going to knuckle down and get all of these things done that i swore i would do this year. at the same time though, i think it is kind of a little bit understandable that constantly being promised time off and then always having it taken away from you at the last minute would make someone go a little bit insane and cranky after a prolonged period of time. i think my next full day off is january 6th or something so let's see how that turns out!
($100 says i will not have that day off)

Dear blog thread,
I'm being an asshole lately because I have misplaced emotional issues. I'm just gonna avoid posting much for the next few weeks listen to Andrew WK, have a beer and get over it. And I may avoid human interaction altogether.

Can one of our Brits tell me approximately how much it might cost to rent a small house or cottage in rural Scotland for, say, six months?

Not sure. Why? I live in rural Scotland and regardless of what Will Self might say it's not all that great.

So, I was finally able to put my motorcycle inside (there was some crap taking up where I needed to put it which the building maintenance lady was supposed to move on Saturday but she just got around to it today).  It barely fits through the hallway, resulting in me having to pick the back wheel off the ground and slid it around before barely fitting the handlebars through the door.  Now I'm a bit sweaty even though it's hovering around freezing outside.

Man, I did this just in time.  It snowed today (about damned time, too!).  Unfortunately, my lower back is not doing that well today from some of the really heavy lifting that I had to do.  I need to strengthen my core a lot.

Are you getting more snow than up here, BB? It keeps snowing like an inch at a time and melting within 24 hours. (I'm like 45 minutes north of Buffalo)

So, my job is kind of on the line (they haven't told me this, but I'm pretty sure it is) and I'm looking for another. Every single internet job I've looked up has come back as a scam, since I like to do silly little things like check out who I am about to give my credit card number to. So, I'm going to try and talk my uncle into managing one of his smaller stores. He was going to let his daughter do this. Some background on his daughter:

• Has been in and out of mental institutions since she was 13
• Stalks guys, claims she loves them forever, and carves their names into her body (I've seen it and it scares the living shit out of me)
• She finally got her license when she turned 18! Within 3 hours she wrapped a car around a tree (for the second time) and has possibly killed one of her friends (still in the hospital, so we'll see how that turns out)
• She drinks, smokes, and does any drugs she can get her hands on

Then she put a restraining order on him. So hopefully, since he was going to trust her, he'll trust me with the job.

Today, it snowed for the first time this year!  It is over 40F now (and has been most of the day), so I'm going to bet most of the snow will have melted, but it does seem like there's more coming this week.  The weather here has been crazy mild so far.  Though, the wind has really picked up today, which kind of sucks.

In other news, I went into the lab to get a few details going and discovered that someone stole my damned laser (as in, it's not in the lab and nobody signed it out).  What the crap?  Group meeting in a minute or two so I can hopefully find out what's going on.  It's sort of a significant piece of equipment to just walk out with, and I suspect it's going to be easy to find out who stole it (they must be using it in their lab, and it's a rather distinctive piece of equipment because we apparently had some custom stuff done to that one before the company shipped it).

It wasn't particularly giant.  Also, it turns out that there had been an issue with it, and now I need to use a different one.  I had set that one up perfectly.  Luckily, they're similar.

Unfortunately, I'm not doing any research evil geniuses would ever find useful, unless they're particularly interested in bend-loss models for helical core fibers, which I don't think is the case.  Also, the laser I'm using is not very powerful (~25mW max).  I have in the past, though and will hopefully do so again in the future.

Not sure. Why? I live in rural Scotland and regardless of what Will Self might say it's not all that great.

Just an increasingly strong desire to change my life up for a while. I've been living in the same house and doing the same thing for five years and I'm getting a bit over it. I've got British citizenship so I can live there without any visa hassles. I've lived in semi-rural England for seven months and frankly there's no fucking way in hell that I ever want to live in Surrey again, and I thought Scotland might be a nice change because it was nice when I went there and stayed in various beds & breafasts in the countryside. It's very apparent to me from my numerous travels to the U.K. that there is also no fucking way in hell that I would ever want to live in an English city.

At the moment these are just idle thoughts. If it happens it probably won't happen for another year or so.

Surrey?  Semi-rural?  No, it's the definition of suburbia.  But I've a friend who lives quite near where Tommy is, and have to agree that it's a mediocre area.   Better places are around Newcastle, anywhere in Lancashire (you can live on the edge of a town there and be truly rural), Devon (less touristy than Cornwall), or lots of places, really.  And Oxford.

Surrey?  Semi-rural?  No, it's the definition of suburbia.

You're right, "semi-rural" is a bad description, but the point I was trying to make is that it was not in a town. There were woods you could walk through with birds in the trees and wild animals running around and almost no concrete in sight. As I'm sure you'd know, there's all the difference in the world between being in Woking and being outside Woking! (Partly this comes down to my Australian upbringing: here you're either in a town or you're not, and there's no in-between like there is in Europe. I wasn't in a town, but I wasn't in a rural area, so the best my brain could come up with was "semi-rural".)

Another reason for preferring Scotland over England is that I have a lot of family in England, and it's difficult to say "I'm thinking of living for six months in England - but not anywhere near you." The problem is that they live in the south, and like I said, Fuck That. I actually wouldn't mind living near Newcastle though, as that's where my grandmother came from (long before I met her, mind: she definitely wasn't a Geordie!)

But this is all hypothetical. Before I can even begin thinking seriously about this I'm going to need to know how much money I'll need to save up. I can keep my job and still be there as long as I have an internet connection, but I'd imagine I'll need to build up a nest-egg before I move.

Dear Blog,

At work today I was clearing out a box full of assorted tinned food, while I was doing this I felt something slightly wet brush the side of my hand. When I looked to see what it was I saw that it was a maggot, I freaked the shit out and wiped it on a nearby piece of cardboard.

Now I can't touch my face without thinking of that disgusting wet feeling.

Ughh I hate all of you wormlike creatures

Harry, I won't lie to you, Nova Scotians are great people and good friends.  I know this because of all the Nova Scotians I know who have moved to Toronto to get out of Nova Scotia.

America has all the Canadians that left because they were too awesome to stay.

By which I mean literally just Neil Young.

Let's not forget Celine Dion, Pamela Anderson and Dov Charney!

Man, Nova Scotia(except certain small towns near the boarder), is amazing, if they are moving to toronto they clearly have no taste. The only acceptable canadian cities are as follows:

Quebec City
Vancouver
Montreal
St John's
St John
Winnipeg
Halifax
etc
etc

IE everywhere but calgary and toronto, fuck dat noise.

I've had more fun in  Halifax than should even be legal.  Problem is, the economy in N.S. sucks.  If it makes you feel any better, most of the ex Nova Scotians I know in Toronto hate it here and are aching to go back.

Whatever dude. I was born in Johannesburg, the year after it snowed there. Later I moved to Australia, the year before it snowed there. I will never get to see snow as a kid. When I do get to see snow people are going to expect me to be 'mature' about it or some shit.

My friend who spent pretty much all her life in Charleston saw snow the first time in her life when she was...um...20?  Maybe 19.  Her reaction was to run out to play in the fluffy white stuff!  While wearing her flip flops.  She didn't think about how it's cold and wet.

As far as moving:

DO - Consider Charleston, SC if you don't mind hot, humid weather (I don't know where in Australia you're from).

DO - Consider Washington, DC if you have a lot of money or don't mind living somewhere where it is pretty much a sure thing that you will get shot at least once.

DON'T - Consider Rochester, NY.  Ever.  EVER.

This. The rest of us were all grumpy about snow and Jimmy made us appreciate it as he giggled and threw snow balls. And then it snowed some more when we were leaving and we were all like, "Fuck this shit."
