Yay!

It was yay until I came home after work to check on them to make sure there were still two... remember what I said about the hamster acting depressed? He now won't open his eyes and when he tries to move he shudders really bad, like he's having a seizure. I think he must have gotten into something he shouldn't have... I'm going to call the vet tomorrow morning if he is still alive. :( (I cried like the baby I am when I picked him up and figured that something wasn't right)

Downside: The 3 year old had diarrhea, which we discovered when he was pantsless and underwearless.

Sending good vibes to your little guy, Brittany.

Blahg,

FUCK, did I screw up. Not only did I completely misread the note given to me about when the TV program I make was going to be on the air (it was on the sister station instead of the one the first ep was on), but the online stream was stuck on their bulletin board, so the show didn't go out on the internet. So anybody who WANTED to see it, like the band, their friends, family, and fans, probably couldn't find it.

I had given them DVD copies last week, and I'll be putting it online at YouTube and MySpace, but shit, there's still something special about seeing it in the moment on actual television that everybody missed, and I feel really bad about that.   I'll have to see if it can be rescheduled some time, since the online messup was on their end at least.

My father had the bright idea of driving his RV into standing water in our yard and now it is stuck, and he has left me without a car or a way to get to work. Ouch.

This kind of puts a strain on my job.

On the plus side? I disemboweled my electric guitar out of boredom. I realized that this would probably be the best thing for me to do since it is a cheap guitar and I want to know how they work. I took the neck off! I walked around with a guitar neck sticking out of my pocket and gathering strange looks. Then I put it back together and took the pickup apart and sort of figured out the wiring and have been asking everyone for a soldering iron for Christmas.

I think my new plan for the rest of my trip is going to involve walking back to my hostel every night, no matter how far away I am, no matter what city I am in, barring the posibility of waking up in a daze five towns over.  It's not like I have a curfew or anything, and it's not as though I need to wake up early every day (though I do like to try), and I love wandering (unfamiliar) cities at night.  Always a very different vibe than the day, and the thinned or vanished crowds in some areas leaves those places so much nicer.

Today was a great day.  The Kafka and Kampa museums were both wonderful, in completely different ways.  I found a couple books I'd been looking for, at better prices than I could have probably ever found in Canada.  I finished the book I had been reading in a cafe and enjoyed it greatly.  I walked for hours and admired some sights.  I sat in parks, talked with strangers, forgot to eat breakfast and lunch, and smiled often.  So good.

Oh, and at 22:00 I was by the astronomic clock and this huge crowd gathered apparently not realizing that it only does its fancy stuff between 9:00 and 21:00, and they watched it as the bell rang and nothing else happened.  A whole bunch of people took videos, there was a big countdown before, and then, nothing.  A lot of people booed and yelled.  I couldn't stop giggling.

So.  I just got back from my grandmother's funeral a little while ago.  I hate funerals.  It's hard not to think about life and death, and that brings out my cynicism like nothing else.  Which in turn brings out my self-loathing for being so cynical.

Which brings me to a question: is there any cure for cynicism?  It brings out a whole bag of feelings that just add onto my current depressive mood.  Quite frankly I am tired of holding a grudge against the world, but I can't figure out how to drop it.  Any suggestions?

Oh fuck. Oh fuck. Oh fuck. Oh fuck.
What've I done? What've I done? What've I done? What've I done?

...What have I done?

Well sure I've signed up to probably do too much this semester, between a second attempt at Chinese, Stage Managing one threatre show and Set Designing another as well as taking on an english subject that is notoriously terrible, and possibly taking on a creative writing subject that - if its anything like its last semester equivilant - will take a hell of a lot of work.

but why is this causing me such anxiety? I struggled to stay on top of everything last semester (and in the end - didn't succeed) but the entire time I was totally relaxed even when the end of semster was coming up and I realised just how much stuff I had to try to catch up on, but now I'm only in the second week and I feel like I've got a fucking ball of terror lodged in my chest.

For the moment, I'm going to put it down to not enough sleep, as that's the greatest difference between then and now.

Phil, at the start of every semester when I look at all the stuff I have to do I normally have a "oh god, I will never be able to handle all this I am going to FAIL and DIE" moment. Just try and separate that big lump of "WORK" into smaller, more manageable lumps. I know it's hard (I sure as hell couldn't do that last year and panicked and stressed a lot), but that's kinda the only thing I can think of . Break it up and organise yourself so that you either work on small bits of each lump regularly, or think about the lumps so that you work on them in order of importance and slog through them?

I dunno, I'm trying to be organised this semester and actually study and read the stuff I need to for classes, so I may not be the best to give advice. Maybe get a calendar and wrote down when everything is due so you can see when you have time to work on things?

True dat, I'm gonna go play it now.

And then all the cynicism comes back when it goes wrong.  :|

Somehow missed that one...yeah, since the aforementioned incident it's been a bit stronger than usual.  On the other hand, it disappears when I'm hanging out with that person, so as long as I've still got that I'll be mostly OK.  It's really only been coming out during times of stress, which admittedly have been pretty often lately but will probably settle down by the end of the summer.

That is an extremely excellent idea. By far my favourite part of travel is getting the feel of a new city under my feet.

Yeah walking places is an excellent way to get a feel for a city, I highly recommend it.

Also bloggy today is my last day at the Sydney Morning Herald. I am going to ask them for a permanent job, even though they have no money or jobs going. While it has been a great experience I am also looking forward to catching up on sleep (I am back at ngiht school, too) and not being stressed for a little bit.

Oh fuck. Oh fuck. Oh fuck. Oh fuck.

Have the shows started already? You probably know it in theory, but try your best to find a way to do your schoolwork in a schedule that doesn't take away from your time to sleep. And don't forget to eat. Skipping either of those will kill you.
It sounds bad, but prioritize your work - which classes you can BS through without having done any readings, which ones need reading to do the writing, which ones you can skim for between classes so as not to take up valuable time after rehearsals. Which classes do you need, which ones do you need to just get credit for. Not that I'm encouraging you to slack or anything, but that's the only way I got through some classes while I was stage managing. "All I need is to get a C in this class. That means I only need to get a 60% on this paper." And I'd literally write 2/3 of a good paper, slap a shitty conclusion on it, and book it to class to turn it in.

is there any cure for cynicism?

Cynicism arises from a mismatch between your expectations of the world and what the world delivers - the world is seen as failing and thus bad.  Try, if you can, to turn this around so that your expectations are based on what the world can and does deliver; this is realism - and it doesn't preclude ambition, which can drive you to find how to get more out of the world than what comes with less effort.

Everyone in my office is talking about racism and the rights of Native Canadians and black history and most of them sound like entitled assholes. A sample:
"[Native Canadians] have had a lot taken away from them. We tooke everything. They deserve the benefits they get."
"But look how much better we made it - look at Canada now!"
"Uh, they live on reserves in trailers without basic amenities, not even clean drinking water in some cases."
"Who's talking about those people? I mean the ones that live in cities."

wait, do they mean the ones with disproportionately high rates of substance abuse and homelessness and who also make up 22% of admissions to sentenced custody while representing only 3% of the canadian population

because if so the people in your office have a very lenient definition of the phrase "much better"

This is my point. Also please notice that I have not referred to them as "friends".

almost all of my worldly possessions are in a storage unit. now i am camping in my living room, and getting ready to live in my husband's grandparents' basement. we are trying to buy a house. currently i'm unemployed, but i have two interviews on monday, one is with a temp reception/customer service staffing company. i am hopeful, and feeling less useless and unemployable than i did a few days ago.

The weather in Berlin is so much nicer and cooler than it has been elsewhere on my trip.  The hostel seems nice, though the staff are insane, I guess in a good way.  Got in too late to really see much tonight, but I'll start hitting the town first thing in the morning.

I mean the ones that live in cities."

my hs psychology teacher once said, terrorism has never worked for anyone except for the US, AKA manifest destiny and pretty much wiping out the native american population.  But if you bring that up in a conversation people look at you as if you're batshit crazy.
