My two best friends won't talk to me right now because they think I'm being manipulative or some shit.  Completely bogus.  Definitely drinking tonight.

The person who runs the writing website I use, writing.com, just donated a shitton of the website's currency to my NaNoWriMo support group, with the message "Thank you for running this group". I'm gobsmacked and also thrilled because now we can have awesome prizes and not worry about fundraising and maybe running out of money before we run out of deserving winners.

I tried calling my father a little while ago with no answer.  I left no message.  When I returned from lunch, I had a missed call and message.  Assuming it was my dad, I checked it.  No, it was his idiot wife leaving a 4 minute message that started with, "Hi Rae, I saw that you called.  You were probably looking for your father, but he's not home.  He'll be back around 1:30, and I'll tell him you called."  (Please imagine that in a similar voice to the nasaly mom from that 70s show)  That he was not home was obvious by his lack of answering the phone, thanks.  I'm sure he would have seen my number on call ID, so your telling me this is not necessary.  She then proceded to tell me all of the details of her life and her mother being in the hospital and her CRT levels are high and blah blah blah fucking blah.  She knows I don't care.  I don't like her and have no interest in any aspect of her life and the fact that she left this huge fucking message on my work phone just pissed me off.  Grrr.

Please be kind to your parents - they're most likely the only ones you'll ever have; and if you're not getting on, they in turn probably feel insecure about having failed in their one allowed attempt to bring you up...

You're careless.

Hee! It was my birthday yesterday (or today for you who don't live in the future). It was pretty good! My brother bought me tickets to Marilyn Manson (which we went to on Wednesday) and my girlfriend bought me a year by year history of Marvel comics (which is great because I'm a huge Marvel nerd) and also pre-ordered me a copy of the special edition of Assassin's Creed 2. I'm fairly excited about it! I also went to dinner with my mum which was ok. Normally we don't get along but she wasn't too bad for the evening. Tonight I'm going to see Nazxul with my best friend and his girlfriend (they bought me the tickets) and then tomorrow I'm going out to lunch with my dad and my step-mum.

Birthdays are tiring.

You can't make this shit up.

I'm on the weekly high school football shoot with the local access cable crew. The game is at a school on the outskirts of the metropolitan area. The back of the stadium where we need to set up the truck is right up against the property line of somebody's very rural acreage. We have to drive through their driveway, through the "backyard" with an old bus, 2 broken-down tractors, a boat I wouldn't trust to float in a puddle, a shack that used to be just a single-wide trailer, but had be triple wided with random scraps of lumber, etc. We go beyond that into the open fields with a pumpkin patch that they're preparing for the Halloween weekend, down and around a dirt road to park next to the stadium.

The engineer's first job is to rake aside the horse manure to create a clean path wide enough for us to lay out our television, audio, and power cables. Our access back and forth between the truck and the stadium is two aluminum ladders placed on either side of the chain link fence.

A cute tiny dog belonging to the family there decided to join us, but was disappointed when nobody would pet her after her vigorous rolling IN the horse shit.

The pizza delivery somehow found us, and we were ravenous enough by then to not care that the tables were right in the middle of the horse dropping covered pasture.

When the game was over, the director pointed his car towards our work area so we could see to put things away by his headlights. After a 12-hour day, you really do quit giving a fuck about the grime accumulating on you as you re-coil the cables and just want to get the hell out of there as quickly as possible.

Really, though, it wasn't that bad, and we had a lot of fun "moaning" about the conditions, but it's stuff like this that gives you stories to tell later. It was a good day. :-)

And then maybe I'll start caring.  Thankfully though, it seems that pretty much every class I'm in this semester is mostly review of things I've done in previous years.

Today has been great. I woke up early and made a surprise breakfast(bacon, eggs, and pumpkin pancakes, with REAL maple syrup) for my boyfriend. Then I played fallout 3, and beat it(I'm actually kinda sad about this.). And now I am off to the market to buy some delicious fresh food! I'm super pumped! And I'm going to knit today, and I love my yarn so much, and my scarf is beautiful, and I'm super excited about that.

And then maybe we'll go to a fetish club! Woo!

ETA:

Dear Blog Thread,

I hate my boyfriend's friends. This is typically not the case, but these people are assholes. Lets just go over what happened tonight.

1. They said they were gonna go grab a pizza and bring it back, but instead decided to stay and eat it, and not even send a text to let us know what was going on. Whereas, I wanted to invite some friends over, and that would have been a huge issue and we would have had to call them and make sure it was ok.
2. One used to live here, and tonight she basically came over, and moved her shit out, and completely ignored my boyfriend. Uh. You guys are friends, and exroommates. At least aknowledge the dude who let you live in his house rent free until your boyfriend sacked up and decided to move in with you.
3. THEY JUST FUCKING IGNORED HIM THE WHOLE ENTIRE TIME. You fucking made a huge deal about coming over, and how he never wants to do shit with you guys anymore(bullfuckingshit. He is the one who hosted the last magic party, and we are fucking throwing one again next fucking week. How the fuck is that not wanting to do shit with you??), and then completely ignored him the whole fucking time.

So, thanks asshole friends. Thanks for making him mopey twice today. You guys are terrible people.

I've started volunteering with a local group called SAIL. From their website:

Quote
a volunteer, non-profit, secular organisation that provides free English support & community services to the Sudanese refugee community in Melbourne, Sydney & Perth Australia

Basically I'll be going to the western suburbs of Melbourne every Saturday morning and spending an hour or two tutoring a primary- or secondary-school aged Sudanese kid (yet to be asigned). Or there's an outside chance I might be helping out some older people, I won't find out for another week or two. Also, every now and then I'll be hanging around to help a group of people attached to the program teach little Sudanese kids how to ride bikes safely.

I'm really looking forward to getting out of my inner-city white middle-class milieu. I went for an introductory tour yesterday and met more new people than I've met in the last year, probably, and had a great time.

obviously our immigration laws aren't tough enough and we need to kick more people out of our country! A few ways we can do this:

1) Have a "citizenship" test, with obscure questions about our dead sporting 'heroes'
2) turn boats away (especially ones that are full of people and sinking) and make them out to be terrible people who throw their children into the sea
3) Make people pay for their time spent in detention centres after they have gotten out.
4) Change our flag to the "Fuck off, We're Full" tattoo that shitheads get a lot.

I'm a little confused by what he means there too. How did Fargo end up with a large Burundian population, or how did Australia come to have a large Sudanese population? Wikipedia says Australia has a quota of 10000, as of 2001. I think that generally the UN takes what is what they deem as the highest need population and match it with a country willing to take refugees, that has enough available jobs and housing, is it safe for these people, etc. Here is an html page of a word document from the UNHCR that might help you understand how it works a little bit?

Harry! It will probably be very fun and also very very challenging. I used to intern with a non profit that does lots of stuff with the new American population here, they were mostly from Burundi Africa and the boys who used to be child soldiers would call me little white girl all the time (as a mean thing, when I wanted them to do something that they did not want to do, like homework) (as in "Why should we listen to you, little white girl? I was a lieutenant in my army")

Oh ... I'm sorry to be confusing. I don't care about quota's and I certainly don't like to turn people in need away. I'm not a right wing nutjob or whatever.

It just seemed a weird transition from Sudan to Australia. I figured that there would be countries enough close by, maybe even on the same continent that might take up people. It just seemed odd for a sizeable group of people to travel all the way across the globe like that.

I get where you're coming from, Australia doesn't strike me as the closest place to migrate to from the Sudan. Then again it is sunny and everyone is friendly and they have cute animals so if you're moving, might as well pick somewhere nice.

Blog thread! I sang in the University Sermon this morning as part of my college choir, and it was pretty good considering we'd never rehearsed and lots of us were ill. It was the first official university event that our college has sung at, so it was a fairly big deal. Afterwards we decamped to another church for drinks and a discussion about theology (we left after the third overly-complex theological question had whistled over our heads). I'm thinking about going every week, although they aren't always university sermons so I won't have to wear my gown every time. A girl from my ice hockey team goes and I'll probably go with her.

I'm not sure what I think about this idea. On the one hand I am fairly sure I'm not a Christian; I don't think I believe in god and I frankly take issue with some elements of Christianity (and it takes issue with some elements of me). But on the other hand I think it will be very illuminating, in the sense that it is an area of society I know next to nothing about and the whole concept is about accepting that there are some things bigger than individual life. I think I need to learn something about humility to avoid being humiliated.

So yes. I won't go so far as to say I've found God or anything but this morning has certainly been interesting. And now I have a (I want to swear but it seems incongruous) lot of work to do.

I don't think Sudanese refugees are going to be too perturbed by Australian animals. All danger is relative.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

Australia is a little far from Sudan, but then again, so are the Americas. If you're a refugee you go where you can. Some refugees go next door but then their shit still gets fucked up sometimes, and hey, if you can move to modern industrial Australia instead, why not?

Dear Blog Thread,

Yesterday was my 2 year anniversary with the lady. Holy crap!

She bought me the entire (24-disc!) David Attenborough "Life on Earth" box set. I am watching Life of Mammals right now. Hell yes.

Yum. Yum. Yum. Yum. Buying fresh food was the tasty most great idea we've ever had. The market was amazingly cheap, and everything is delicious.

Dear forums.

I need to make some radical changes in my life. Like maybe moving to a new town, drop out of university (again) and things like that, I don't really know yet, but I can't go on like this. I'm going to take a break from reading/posting on here untill I have figured a few things out.

See you then, I guess!

Man we should just get an Internet House going somewhere. I'm taking a year off between undergrad and (possibly) grad school, Jens is thinking of taking a year off, you're contemplating being done-ish.

What do you think about Chicago?

I took my year off last year, you guys are so late. But I'm contemplating a move to a different part of the country, and consequently, New York.

Yeah, I might leave Jamaica.

I took my "year off" (a lot of hard fucking work trying to continue to scrape together a living) two years ago.
