Discordance Axis-Mind Seduction Aftermath

Just bought an album of theirs packaged with a crapload of live shows, eps and splits, pretty much 3 years of their musical output on one disk. 69 tracks of Grindcore goodness.

Pretty good as well, though some of the live stuff has shocking sound quality.

My playlist at the moment is 335 songs, consisting mostly of all the full albums I have on my computer.

The song at the moment is The Gathering - These Good People.

If you've never listened to The Gathering, I highly recommend them. If you like atmospheric rock with female vocalists (Anneke Van Giersbergen can literally make your soul melt with her voice. MELTY SOULS!) you should like The Gathering. Everyone should like The Gathering, because they're awesome. So check 'em out. They're a Dutch band.

Not having really listened to 3 Inches of Blood, I would hazard to say that in a battle between them and Finntroll, the trolls would emerge victorious. Why?

BLACK metal. Poserrrrrr :p

They also incorporate Jolk as well as Humpaa.

As for who'd win, if 3 Inches of Blood looked like they sound, then it would be quite an interesting contest.

Unfortunately, they LOOK like they should be a bad screamo band. Fortunately however, they sound like Manowar on volatile drugs with Rob Halfords evil twin on vocals.

Natten's Madrigal is PAINFULLY kvlt. But in a very good way.

You know, I really rather fail to see the distinction. Actually, I sort of do, but still. Death Metal is a bit more fast paced, Black Metal is generally more atmospheric, and has keyboards. But then, there are atmospheric Death Metal bands with keyboards. Does this make them Black Metal bands? I don't know, ask Samoth or something. At any rate, they're just labels. And really, I fail to see how Finntroll is Black Metal. So...yeah.

Pace has nothing to do with it. Ask Marduk if you can't make fast black metal, or Vital Remains if you can't make slow death metal. Nor do Keyboards, except in application. The easiest things that distinguish are:

1) vocals: Black and Death vocals sound very different. Black vocals are rawer, nastier and will stray into higher pitches than death (especially in certain bands). Death vocals tend to stay quite low, except on Gore Death. Blackened death metal also uses black vocals over death music. The best way to distinguish is that normally Black vocals are much clearer. (rasped/screeched/yelled rather than the full on DM growl).

2) Sounds: Almost all bands that have any sort of mediterranean/middle eastern tinge are death.  Bands with a northern European folk sound have a higher tendency to be black, though this is not as clear cut, as many early MDM bands incorporated folk elements.

3) Complexity: Most non-symphonic black metal is much simpler musically than death metal, especially technical death metal.

Finntroll tab

Morbid Angel Tab

Should give you an idea of the difference.

4) Picking and guitar tones: Black metal often uses a higher guitar tone than death metal, and makes much wider use of tremolo picking, especially old-school bm.

5) most importantly, riffs. Impossible to describe, but they're just different. Again, the tabs will give you an idea. Drumming is also different.

It really is an important thing to get right though, as black metal bands in particular absolutely hate being called death metal (given that black metal is at least in part a reaction against the sterility of DM)
