They got back really late, Faye was getting up soon for her early morning shift. When she got back it was probably noon or not much later.

If Marten learns to stand up to his mom it may enable progress on other parts of his life.

It seems to me that panels 1-4 are a nightmare that Marten is having, inspired by Pintsize's suggestion (if that was not just another dream). In panel 5 he has just woken up screaming and is relieved that it was just a dream. His mother has heard him screaming and is looking in to see what is happening.
Method of Madness:
Well...no. Probably not, he just ran back to bed after seeing Faye and his mom.
