It'd be nice if he had translations when he had characters sign.

Do I *really* need to post a tvtropes link here?

I've got a bad feeling that Billie is going to get too much of a positive response and that her worst characteristics will be enabled and encouraged by her new friends. This will either get her in trouble or it will strain her relationship with Ruth and the others at Read Hall, leaving her with the need to make a choice about what she wants more: External validation or meaningful relationships.

Oh, and I now desperately want Joyce to run into Lucy at Jacob's church and the two to become best friends. The amount of pure joyful positive sugar will be astonishing and will probably start crystallising out as a thin layer of frosting on the walls and floors!

They are either identical to or very similar to what we here in the UK call the 'High Church', which was basically the post-Henry VIII Catholic church  that no longer recognised the Pope's authority. There was a flirtation with puritanism during the brief reign of Edward VI that led to the disappearance of icons but, mostly, it remains a Catholic-esque sect with many of the same rituals and observances, just exclusively carried out in English.

It's worth noting that the Church of England - the origin of the worldwide Anglican communion - encompasses to this day a huge variety of viewpoints and rituals, from the Laudian "Anglo-Catholics" at the high-church end to pretty fundamentalist evangelical puritans at the low-church end.  It is amazing that some of these can co-exist, but this is the reason for the indecisiveness of the C of E in general.  It is one of the great British compromises!

Wow, Joyce, you're being super shitty. It's kinda funny that electric guitars are the biggest deal, though. Also can someone explain the occupied vs. empty cross thing? An empty cross is still showing what killed him, wouldn't celebrating his resurrection be an empty cave?

I have no certain knowledge but I think that some groups feel that a model of a bloodied and broken man nailed to a cross as a symbol of veneration is, at the very least, in highly poor taste, compared to a completely abstract shape. I think that I understand that; there is a touch of sadistic voyeurism about it at least in my view.

Then again, my particular group rejects all forms of religious imagery of all kinds as objects of veneration so I might not be the best person to ask.

The cross isn't a "completely abstract shape," though, it's explicitly a method of execution. Yeah, it's less unpleasant without Jesus on it, but it still is a symbol of his death, is it not?

Also, if you don't mind me asking, what is your particular group? I'm merely curious, you should not feel compelled to answer if that is private.

As someone who was raised as Catholic, I never understood the obsession with the crucifixion myself. It's not just the image of Jesus on the cross, or talk about how he was killed then resurrected... They go into great detail about it. Most Catholic churches have some area devoted to painting or murals of the stations of the cross, basically a picture book of Jesus' torture and public execution... I suppose it's to feed into the guilt and persecution complexes the church tries to instill on it's followers.

Ok, but I mean...how is the empty cross any better? How is it any different than a religion where the prophet who was executed by electric chair and using that as the religion's symbol?

The actual graphic representation of an injured, bloody, suffering and dying Christ figure atop it. It's a lot more in your face when there's a body and face able to stare back at you than empty.

Religion continues to completely baffle me.

For about a dozen years I studied and searched for a religion.

After those dozen years it seemed incontrovertibly apparent that the problem with religion... is people.
Every one I studied held the populace to the highest ideals.
And EVERY ONE, at all levels, was rife with hypocrisy and elite-ism.

My basic conclusion was,
"If you wanna believe in any god, do so. Just don't try and include anyone else in that relationship. Keep it between YOU and whoever your god may be,"

Jacob's a good dude. Also, have we ever seen the back of his head? I'm really curious if the really thin bit of hair that's separated from the rest of his hair goes all the way around. I guess I'll go back and check.

Edit: This seems to indicate that it does. Honestly, that might be the most baffling hairstyle I've ever seen. I'm not asking why, I'm asking how. Does he shave the bald bit really often? That seems so inconvenient.

Further Edit: And this one confirms it.

eeeeh... Not so much *dislike* as given little reason to like her. She's kind of like Carla. Rough, abrasive, standoffish, prickly. Sal doesn't like her because she's in roller derby too, but was always harsh to Sal. And then Marcie got the hots for Malaya and spending all her time with her instead of Sal.

In a lot of ways, Carla is just a little kid at heart. She is capable of malicious action but mostly she just doesn't think about the effect on others because she's having too much fun right now! I also think that she'll find some completely offbeat and deniable way to apologise to Ruth without being seen as soft.

Carrying boxes with the 'this way up' symbol pointing in the wrong direction seems to be some sort of tradition at IU. maybe it's symbolic of something? Or maybe it's just a cheap joke?

It's kind of in-character for Joyce to just blanket assume that all 'Christian' denominations are basically the same and do exactly the same things in exactly the same way (Note: It is also culturally correct that she would consider the traditional churches to be 'not real Christians' and therefore automatically different).

Here's where the real mental trick about Joyce Brown comes in: Jacob is a nice guy whom she likes and is a self-professed Christian. To Joyce, 'nice guys' who are 'Christian' are automatically of a similar denomination to her. She's learning now not to let her fantasies about the shape of the world affect her assumptions.

This is where the sheltered naive thing is not on the cute side of the spectrum.

This isn't sheltered naivety, this is selfish immaturity.

Kinda have to agree with this one.

It's almost a dangerous thing Willis is doing here.

Whenever you're dealing with Willis's art, you have to be aware of his background: The strong reserve of self-loathing he feels for the person he was as a teenager and college student and the enormous resentment he feels for his parents and their religion. Given that Joyce is his SI and is, in many ways, the person he was back then, you can expect Willis to occasionally throw muck at her simply because she has elements of himself in her that he now despises.

I doubt there are many who *are* unaware of his background / Joyce being his previous self's alter-ego.

I would however be very surprised if anyone over the age of five would react the way Joyce is reacting (particularly the "Hey Buddy!" and frankly, screaming that she's doing).

Honestly, I'm only aware of his background because of this thread. Also...not defending how she's doing it, but is sharing a cup not a valid concern? Wine isn't high enough in alcohol to kill germs, is it?
