Conflict is core to storytelling. The trick is just finding the conflict that's natural to the characters.

I think it's a contrived jump from "It could have been a midnight petting zoo" to "It was, for a fact, a petting zoo", though. But it makes for a very clever punchline.

As far as I can tell, her apparent age changes along with the art style at various points, or perhaps as Jeph needed (she seems to look younger when around Sam, for example).  Then again, I'm not the best judge, being at an age where I'm still not over the hill, but think that anyone who looks ≤ 25 looks like a kid.

Ah! So we're going with the classic comedic joke of 'two people talking about different things but assuming that the other knows what they're really talking about'! That kind of works in this scenario, especially as Jeph has made it clear that May can't plausibly lie to save her life. It thus becomes inevitable that she's going to let enough slip for Momo to deduce what she did without necessarily with whom.

Momo's body language and expressions in this strip are hilarious! It could be a schoolgirl animé, couldn't it? Usa-chan asking Moko-chan what she did last night that led her to come into the dorm so late? Once again, that fits because of Momo and May's levels of maturity do seem in most ways to be at about 'high school graduate' levels.

On the subject of Momo's body language, did anyone else think her posture and outline in panel 2 was a trace of an earlier Emily appearance?

It's not contrived when you remember from yesterday's strip that the petting zoo was Momo's suggestion about what May had been doing. So, Momo isn't looking for the truth but rather validation of her own personal version of reality. Most fan-theorists get wedded to their head-canons like that!

But - I really like today's comic. It's funny, and I genuinely like where this is going. It has potential for both comedy and interesting non-funny interactions.

I think an all-night petting zoo would be mostly bats.

Bats are probably a poor choice.  They tend to panic when large mammals move nearby.  And occasionally, panic on the aggressive side with a sacrificial kamikaze going on a no-hope attack to buy time for the rest to escape. Small children could get claw marks or bleeding bites and be traumatized.  Depending on how carefully cared for and selected the bats are, there could even possibly be a risk of rabies.

I can't think of any nocturnal animals of North America that would react well to petting. Other than domestic cats, and besides being too familiar to people for a petting zoo to be an experience, they hardly count as nocturnal anymore.  Coyotes and Bobcats can (sort of) become accustomed to humans, but I've never heard of one tolerating more than a very small closed set of humans.  A bobcat can be friends with one or two humans, tops.  Any unfamiliar humans will be treated the way wild bobcats treat humans (ie, panic and run). Casting a broader net, I think maybe lemurs are reasonably okay with people, assuming the people bring treats?

Jeph's art has got REALLY good lately. I love May's expression when she's trying to sneak in in the first panel.

Eh - actually i'd say he peaked around the late 2000s-early 3000s.  Compare the current art here: (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3989) with the same bunch here: (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2798).  The current stuff strikes me as more 'cartoonish' compared to the greater realism of the previous work.  The lips are the most obvious difference.  Jeph is obviously capable of doing both styles so he must have made the change for a reason.

I have to look carefully to see those differences - the one thing that annoys me is having gone back to the "everyone has a super-pointy chin" style after having more realistic face shapes in the 1000s. I guess different people notice different things.

This wasn't a penny dropping. This was a sack of pennies falling on Momo's head after it fell out of the upstairs window of a bank.

Based on Momo's expression in panel 5, May does not have to do much but confirm what Momo has already deduced. The question is whether May will tell her with whom she did the deed and whether a conversation will ensue about the difference between 'relationship' and 'sex as uncommitted recreation'. Momo strikes me as the sort of person who would have problems accepting that the latter is actually possible.

Jeph did a lot of good work with the art today; I particularly like how he did the crowded street in panel 1; it's a lot more complex than how he normally does these things. One thing I did notice though is that Momo is blushing like a human rather than having the little tint panels on her cheeks light up the way he normally does with anthropomimetic synthetics.

Actually, that's how Jeph identifies a figure as female. Dora  and Emily have them too; I think Tai, Faye and Claire do too but it's a bit too early in the day to go searching for panels of them without their glasses on.

Been recently rereading the comic (not the entirely, but a whole lot), and blushing Bubbles/May/Roko are, from what I recall, always depicted as having somewhat animesque, short straight lines on their cheeks. And Roko's chassis is probably towards the high-end in terms of quality.

EDIT: no, sorry. I remember Roko's coworker blushing similarly (her entire face being red), and her face wasn't extremely humanlike. I think that just indicates super-intense blushing that goes beyond the narrow short line. Or maybe there are just two kinds of blush panels, depending on which aesthetic the manufacturer is going for.

As noted, it eyeliner on female characters (or rather on characters who wear eyeliner, most of whom are female).

Rectangular speech bubbles usually mark an AI, but there are exceptions.  Momo in particular appears to have a more HiFi human voice that she uses from time to time in addition to her default robot voice.   She is, after all, a student of human customs and social behavior. 

Or Jeph may have forgotten to draw the robovoice rectangles in those strips.  But, I only remember it happening with Momo and it fits the character, so I'll keep that in my headcanon unless Jeph says it ain't.

Bubbles - as I mentioned a few posts before - blushes similarly to the way both Roko and May have, in the past. So I don't think that's about "military vs civilian". I still think it has to do with the intensity of emotion, or perhaps it's just an art inconsistency (I think the former, though).

2. Not exactly clear what May would get out of her proposal to Sven. Even if she's mentioned such activity before. The whole robot / human sex thing never made a lot of sense to me anyway.
3. It turns out there was no reason to censor May's chest.
4. From what May has said before, you'd think there would be no reason to censor her bottom, either.
5. May's post-whatever reaction is pretty hostile. It'd ruin the whole experience for me, personally.
6. USB is about 18 watts max even with oddball nonstandard protocols. You're not powering a robot body on that.
7. Do not ever sleep with someone who is deeply ashamed of the idea.

Ever since 2012, the USB Power Delivery specification has allowed 20 volts at 5 amps, for 100 watts, with 100% standard protocols. My employer makes some non-standard USB devices that can deliver 130 watts, as well (I'm not sure if anyone else makes anything with higher power output - we have a 180 watt non-standard Thunderbolt 3 device, but it spreads that power over two connectors).

100 watts still might not be enough, depending on how efficient robot bodies are. I believe humans average about that much when stationary, more when moving around. Some fraction of that, I don't know how much but probably a lot, goes to keeping us warm enough to prevent fungal growth. Synthetics can skip that.
