Under Byen - Fugle og ild

Very spacious production (that's a good thing), probably due in part to the  fact that it sounds like it was recorded inside a bass drum. Right at the start of the track it's kind of odd that the vocals aren't in english, but that goes away when the track gets settled in. Also I hear strings, strings are awesome. The drumming seems sort of like an almost dancable IDM track which is just another kind of awesome.

8/10

I have no idea how many time I've played this today. I've gotta make up a hiphop with kids mixtape some time.

Also, thankyou Kai for posting the Beefheart. It's enlightened me as to just how little blues I've got. After christmas I can stop watching my money and buy this album.

Praeserpium Machinarum: If it's too "What the FUCK" for ye, three of his albums, Safe as Milk, Unconditionally Guaranteed, and Bluejeans and Moonbeams are more regular blues records. Safe as Milk is crazier than the other two, and the other two (Unconditionally and Moonbeams) are usually ignored when talking about Beefheart. Milk is crazy awesome though.

Ugly Duckling - Pass it On: Kind of catchy, upbeat and the horn section is pretty damn cool. The actual lyrical bits, are kind of amusing, but pretty standard fair. STill, A TGribe Called Quest springs to mind when I listen to this, and that's a good thing. 7/10 I'll look more up :)

deep puddle dynamics- where the wild things are
curious choice.  i think i'd give it a 5 or 6 out of 10.  the problem with deep puddle, to me, was that too many of the songs felt like all four of them forcing their own style onto a track, instead of really doing something together, and i think "where the wild things are" is one that really suffers.  although... it's definitely stuck with me, if only in the number of times my bar order has been "a liter of knob creek and a bottle of ether."  gotta love slug.

for my pick, i'll stay in the anticon(ish) area:

Your review's fine. The links expired anyway, so I'm going to kick-start the thread with a seasonal number: The heavenly(?) sound of The Arkham Carolers with Dance the Cultists.

This particularly goes out to anyone who knows the works of HP Lovecraft.

The Arkham Carolers - Dance The Cultists

As a Lovecraft fan, I caught some of this, but seriously, Arkham Carolers? This was just fucking ridiculous. Seriously Khar where do you find this stuff/shit? Since it's just a version of one of the worst fucking songs ever from a musical standpoint, I can't give it to much but for outrageous novelty value it gets 5/10.

It's about time for:

Tomahawk - Rape This Day

Opens with crackling synths that segue into a palm-muted guitar part with some sort of Trent-Reznor-esque vocals underneath, then it picks up into a pretty decent rock song before slowing down and building up again with another palm-mute section and back into a rock bit. Not bad, not amazing. 6/10.

Now, for one of the most madly excessive cover versions in history. The original is just over 2 minutes long with simple guitar and violin parts. This version is great though, despite losing much of the emotion and rawness of the original, as long as you can avoid laughing at how the singer pronounces 'Coca Cola':

Starts with an organ and some brass, which provides a nice atmosphere. Vocals and drums join in, but dont really sound like they belong there. Actually the vocals are just god-awful. But the music than fades and a different, much more coherent and much better, part begins. The vocals are out of place again, but not really annoying like the intro was. Parts of the song I like, but other parts completely ruined it. I'm pretty sure I'd like the Sol Invictus version though.
5.5/10 I guess. But who knows, it might grow on me.

Sounds like a cool cross between Slayer and another band whos name I cant remember. A bit too much screaming for my liking tho. Some nice quitar and double bass tho. But seriously the screaming just ends up killing it. The bits with no lyrics are good.

Evergrey - The Great Deceiver

Great music! I wasn't expecting metal to burst into my headphones though. Vocals remind me of Rob Zombie, don't take offense. Specials back vocals too. The riffs are nice, but I saw the breakdown coming twenty miles ahead, it was too obvious.

AWESOME SOLOS! This my friends, is a great (european?) metal. The drummer's double-kick is rad too.

Jean Leloup - La Pluie

I dig the french... omg how would i categorize this... indie/funk?

About two thirds of the way through the first listen I was totally ready to turn it off and never listen to it again... I just finished the second and am strangely hypnotized. I love the nonsense bits (dont hurt me! i dont know french!) '"laleelala'leela eat that bear express' (i mock because i'm ignorant!)

Now, seriously to the review. Its got some serious groove to it, and i had google translate the page - i think its kinda sad... and from the vocal bridge just after halfway through the song and near the end, with its own emotion... I dunno. It seems dancable, its nice and funky... i love the prominent base and the wahwah pedal... its... so funky! ANYways

Its so wierd... and french... and funk... and... ahh... so wierd! but wierd in a good way.
5.5/10 For accessibility
It hit me as cool but kinda repetitive... and... i dunno, this is just how I saw it.
6.5/10 For musical value
Somehow I think I love this song... i don't know... it just gets better as I listen to it more... I think i'm being assimilated into the <whatever the french version of borg would be>
8/10 For pure enjoyment value

Overall I'd say 7 out of 10.

I know this is a double post, but nobody else appeared to be interested in the last submission.

Silly Wizard - The Rambling Rover

OK, I didn't understand the point of this. It's comedy music without any form of instruments whatsoever. If it were gutbustingly hilarious, I would have forgiven the shortcoming, but though the rhymes were somewhat clever, I didn't find myself chuckling at it. 2/10 for the crazy thich Irish accents.

Iced Earth - Stormrider

Simply put, if you like metal, you'll like this.  It's really well-done in just about every respect ... the band is nice and tight, everyone seems in touch with each other, and the musical ability being demonstrated is not to be sneezed at.  That said, you have to already like metal to like it.  Personally, the vocals aren't really my thing, and while the drumming is awesome, the guitar seems sorta ho-hum ... the solo sounded like the guy could've done better but didn't really feel like it.  Maybe I didn't listen closely enough, but I barely heard the bass at all.

I can see why this song would be awesome for any metalhead, but the vocals and uninteresting bass (or rather, it seemed, the lack of any at all) turned me off.  I'm an aspiring bass player myself, though, and I'm always really picky about vocalists, so I probably could've predicted that this would be what I'd have a problem with before I even listened to the song.

I posted this on yousendit for a friend a couple days back, I'm not sure how long it'll stay up.

http://s52.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0V36CEPDFNA8B0S4D5PR3123D1">Jack Rose - Sunflower River Blues"

This is one of the greatest bits of acoustic guitar work I've ever heard.  Plenty of his stuff is more rambling and Eastern-influenced and a lot harder to get into for someone who's been raised with Western musical styles, but this song in particular is just a sublime little piece of 6-string wizardry (He plays rhythm, melody, and harmony at the same time) and ... OK, I'll just let it speak for itself.

Jack Rose - Sunflower River Blues

I will be the first to admit that I know next to nothing about music theory.
So all I tell you is that it sound pretty odd and thereby awesome, quite complex and interesting. It starts with with some strumming(?) and then it settles into a groove of sorts I suppose. Not much variation but then again it's short. The brevity actually acts to it's advantage since I think it would become tiring, not because it's bad but because there is just so much going on. Finally I am a bit awed at how much sound he can get out of one guitar.

8/10

And now my favourite screamo/hardcore band:
The Blood Brothers - Six Nightmares at the Pinball Masquerade

I suggest jumping around screaming like a lunatic to this song :)

Starts with screwed up mathcore type stuff and characteristic Blood Brothers dual screaming, building up more with spastic guitars and WHOAH OH OH. Gets slightly more of a cohesive feel, then drops off totally into a slow section, which then builds up again, before more dumb spastic stuff. Continues in much the same vein. Urgh. So far, I've only heard one good Blood Brothers song (Burn Piano Island, Burn) and that was nothing really to go crazy about. I really can't stand all that goddamn mathcore bollocks. I'll give this a generous (for me) 4/10.

Now, badassery time. I present maybe the greatest hope for modern European metal, finally taking the whole melting-pot in the right direction with this anthemic melodic/symphonic industrial-tinged deathblackthrash skull-stomper:

Cryptic Wintermoon - Bonegrinder 1916

I would have put up Supersatan, nigh on maybe the most fucking bad-ass song of all time, but I think I've set it before.

Cryptic Wintermoon - Bonegrinder 1916

Heavy. Mother. Fucking. Shit.

Starts up with some silly old-timey musicings, which slowly crunch into heavy ass guitars and solid metal drums with some greatly-sung (looked 'em up) pretty decent lyrics. This is good hard Death Metal that doesn't need to show off and be fast for you to realize how much face it melts. The background synth adds a good touch too. Darn fine ending too. Goes into the next song perfectly I'm sure.

8/10. Rawk.

Estradasphere - The Dapper Bandits

Some excellent avant-garde, bordering on more genres than I care to count. Reminded me of Mr. Bungle, only without all the Mike Patton. Won't go into a step by step breakdown of the song, way too much going on.  It has no (or next to no) vocals, only a little spoken word part. The narrative was also interesting to listen to. Anyways, I liked it alot and have aldready gone and checked out a few other tracks by the band, and must say I'm impressed. 9/10

Dead Meadow - Eyeless Gaze All Eye/DOn't Tell the Riverman

It's like, this sort of darkish, bluesy riffed something or other. There's one band they remind bme of but I can't remember. Pretty slow, and not much really happens, until a bit later into the song it moves more into this sort of ambient stuff, which I actually like a fair bit. Basically, it's alright, and I might check them out a bit more. 7/10.

Now, for mine, we're going to go into the really awesome Sopor Aeternus (An the Ensemble of Shadows). Prepare to be goth'd out.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Sopor Aeternus and the Ensemble of Shadows - In an Hour Darkly

Starts up with some pleasant plucking at the beginning.  The bells give it a nice Gothic-European feeling, and then some pounding bass and succulent percussion kicks in--soon after it goes totally Gothic on me. I can't understand the lyrics, but he has a cool voice, though it can be some-what irritatingly over-calm.

However, when it gets faster in the middle and add some more techno-ish synth thumps, hand claps, etc., it gets annoying--seems unfit for the incredibly bleak lyrics.  It gets slower near the end, though. I'll give it a 6/10.

Reverend Glasseye and His Wooden Legs - God Help You Dumb Boy

begins with good acoustic strumming and drums,
kindof a western sound, very good, reminds me of 'these poor bastards', or at times of the violent femmes.
then a spanish sounding horn comes in, fitting quite well...
quite good, imo.
8/10

Desperados - The Dawn of Dying

Well, this certainly wasn't what I was expecting. After hearing the gunshot and horse noises, I was assuming something very different than what I got. I'm not sure what to call this. Cowboy metal? Sorta Pantera-esque, some nice lead guitar work at the beginning, I was sorta meh on the main riff, and the vocals were not among the best I've heard, but far from the worst. Overall, I'll give it a solid 8/10. A pleasant surprise.

Because I just bought Exodus's latest album, I'm binging on them right now. Thus, I shall post Exodus - Deathamphetamine

Exodus - Deathamphetamine

This is going to be interesting because this sounds like heavy metal and TOOL is about as heavy as I get. Hmm nice driving beat at the beginning. Very hot guitar work. Oh... enter the screaming. I am a firm believer that all metal would be twenty times better with a good singer. The music itself is freaking awesome. I know this is nerdy of me, but I want to play it on Guitar Hero. The drumming is a bit overzealous, but at least it doesn't drown out the increasingly kick ass guitar solos.

I'd give it a 7/10. I love the music, but the screaming... just not my thing.

Arctic Monkeys - Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But...
hmm... this one starts off kindof  jazzy, but then some pretty rocking guitar comes in.
vocals are decent, but not really my fav. i really like the first half of this song, but after that it just seems drawn out.

id give it about a 7

Same here.  I actually got into Edguy from Tobias Sammet's "Avantasia" (one and two, haven't listened to two much).
