Gargamel! - Grin, Reaper

that was odd. started off kind of synth-poppy and all of a sudden there was this screaming and it got a bit metal on me. interesting mix, but i must admit it's not in my usual listening whatchacallit. habit, or something. overall i reckon i'd give it a 7 for quirkiness, plus a bonus half-point for a name with punctuation (!). So 7.5/10.

Toecutter  - Ode To Brendan Phelan

this was the first peice of breakcore music i ever heard, and i finally tracked down the album it's from so i thought i'd share it with you all.

Ode To brendan Phelan

I suppose I'll start of by saying this is not a genre of music that I listen to, so please forgive me for any ignorance or lack of understanding of the 'nuances' of the genre or whatever. While I did enjoy this song it was more for it's novelty value than anything else. The mixing is competent but there is too much focus on being random rather than actually making a 'song' (methinks this is the whole point though)
I'd give it a 5/10

edit: whoops forgot my song 'Everyone Alive Wants Answers' by Colleen
when I figure out how to upload stuff I'll hyperlink it

Colleen - Ritournelle

Sweet track. Repetative but not boring at all. It is very relaxing but still sounds a bit sinister, which could probably be attributed to the sound you hear in the background for the second half of the song, sounds like it is being played on an old vynil player thingamabob (I'm sure there is a better word for that but in my current state I honestly can't recall what it is). Anyway, not much else to say, 7.5/10

Liam Lynch - My United States of Whatever

Musically, my impression is "whatever."  But I'm not much of a fan of the guitar-distorted-so-that-it-sounds-like-it-coming-out-of-a-speaker-too-small.  The amusing lyrics make up for it, though.  Seems as though that most of this song's value is novelty value. So: 6/10

Sorry to derail but I just wanted to mention this since Liam Lynch was mentioned.
On the same album as the “Whatever” song he does a bunch of “Fake Songs” (the name of the album) in which he picks a band and writes a song that sounds just like that band. He does Bjork, Bowie, Pixies, Depeche Mode and Talking heads and they all sound so good.

ok...i listened to it like the thing said, and i'm probably replying to this totally wrong, but anywho, onto my review

first off: it's jazz i think.  not what i like to listen to. but it had a good beat and it was pleasant to listen to, i liked the horns too.  the guitar work was good and stuff.  but there were no lyrics.  i can't score it high because i don't like jazz.  but for the sake of not being ignorant or whatever.  i'll give it a 5 out of 10, because it was good.

Anberlin - Ready Fuels

Um. This is pretty bad. It doesn't sound like Coldplay, which is good i suppose, but honestly, I would rather just be listening to Coldplay. The riffs are decidedly insipid and uninspired, the song structure is predictable at best and the vocals are terrible. Sorry, 1.5 out of 10 I guess.

I'm not a huge fan of rap (jurassic five and astmosphere are pretty cool though) but I like this song. It's got a smooth, catchy rhythm and I can dig the jazzy touch that the theme from the odd couple (I don't know what it's actually called) brings to the song. I don't know much about rapping but the rap itself is pretty well executed. I had read the lyrics before I had listened to it and I was afraid it was going to be 'juggaloey', after  I had heard the song it was put into context and I was alot happier.
It's not the best rap music I've heard but it's a pretty solid effort. I'd give it 7/10

The Pipettes - Your Kisses are Wasted on me.

Wow.  I like just about everything about this song except the vocals.  Kickin bass line, Drums are not too much or too little, Guitar complements the rest of the song perfectly, Great dancable beat.  Actually, now that I listen to it again, the vocals are kinda growing on me. 8/10.

Alright, how about a live blues/folk cover of one of Bowie's disco songs:

M. Ward - Lets Dance

Very laid back sort of track, some good atmosphere at the start with the lonely sounding harmonica, a touch I particularly liked. Almost dub-like atmosphere and vocal effects as the singing kicks in. I don't know the original song, so I can't  compare anything, but this song sounds pretty good. Maybe a bit too relaxed and hoarse, but not that bad at all. 7/10

Now, I'm going to make you listen to over ten minutes of Cradle of Filth. This song, plus their cover of 'For Those Who Died' with Martin Walkyier singing duet with Dani, entirely justifies their continued existence for the rest of time as far as I am personally concerned. All the melodrama and excess, wedded with actually decent music. I just have to get this song out every now and again and scream along. So much fun.

I've never really checked out CoF, I had heard Nymphetamine before and liked it but never got any more because well, word on the street is they suck and I didn't want their bad stuff to prevent me from enjoying that track. Now, this track, Queen of Winter, Throned, is pretty much what I assumed I would be getting if I went ahead and checked out more. Overly bombastic, gimmicky black-ish metal. Musically I was unimpressed, by the numbers stuff. The vocals vere awful. Felt gimmicky, not real. Really detracted from the song. 5.5/10 I guess.

Go here And get Firesoul. Your life will be just a bit more awesome the moment you listen to it.

So, according to Wikipedia, Tarkio was Colin Meloy's pre-Decemberists band. Liking a fair amount of Decemeberists material, I was somewhat excited to listen to this. His vocal delivery is characteristically precise, and I liked the lyrics, especially the chorus. However, the instrumental accompaniment sounds pretty much as unimaginative as possible. This is admissable, I guess, since it's apparently just a college-rock band, but I still wouldn't listen to it on my own accord. 6/10

Well I loved the opening guitar of the song. I was really getting into it ..............then the vocals came in...........honestly I thought they were terrible. It got somewhat better around the 2 minute mark and I enjoyed it a bit from there. Not terrible but not sonething I'd listen to either.

Man, that A7X song was nowhere near as bad as I'd expected. Vocals especially were really generic, but it didn't have a bad solo and it had a pretty nice 80's vibe to it which saved it a bit. Also, Fear and Loathing. I was braced for second album My Chemical Romance and had only downloaded to mock. Pretty good for the scene they come from though, though still not my thing.

Asobi Seksu - New Years

Starts up with noisy guitar and upbeat organ. Then a very syrupy, out of place seeming female Japanese voice kicks in, working suprising well with the  instrumentation, but seeming rather cliche. There is a somewhat post-punky vibe, however, a suggestion of an east-asian Cocteau Twins. There's also a great bit with a massively processed 'scream' of noise. Not that bad a track everything considered, and certainly not your average j-pop. 7/10

And now, rocking out with the cock out.

Also, where did you think all the samples came from?

It's this great old horror film with Vincent Price that UK doom bands have a strange obsession with. Kind of like neo-folk bands and The Wicker Man.

Cathedral - Hopkins (The Witchfinder General)

I don't listen to much music like this.  And by "much" I mean "any".  This song is making me reconsider.  The distortion is (unlike I was expecting) not painful.  Although, I have to ask, is this song really about what it sounds like, or is this some sort of extended metaphor?  Either way, this song is pretty good, in a 'I need to feel badass right now' kind of way.  The samples, I have to say though, turn me off.  And now, you get to read a rating from the least qualified person to rate this song: umm... 8/10.

You metalheads need to check out some bands that have horn sections, because, well, horn sections make a band that much better.  So I give you:

The Blues Brothers - Who's Making Love?
A little ditty about why you shouldn't mess around.  Take it to heart.

Something Corporate- Konstantine- An awful, awful track.  And this is coming from someone who loves piano-rock.  Its closest thing to a redeeming feature is the hilariously bad lyrics.  Seriously, read them.  http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=141169
My favorite:
"and I'm dreaming in your living room
but we don't have much room to live"
1/10.

The Blues Brothers- Who's Making Love?- I don't usually listen to this kind of music, and I had low expectations, as I had considered The Blues Brothers a novelty band.  But this was actually really good.  It's a really fun song, and I'll probably try to listen to more like it.  9/10

Ted Leo and The Pharmacists - The One that Got Us Out

I thought Me and Mia was a great song and this doesn't top it in terms of pop appeal. This is a subtle in message protest poppunk(meant in the best possible way) song, although it is a wee bit too complicated to be catchy as such. The lyrics are pretty good and for once it isn't mindless bushbashing, you could call them social conscious. The music is not at all subtle, it is brash and empowering brimming over with punky energy. Ted Leo sings with conviction and fervour despite his vocal limitations.
Overall I like this song, but I think it lacks really good hooks and potentially could have been better if the song structure was more simple.
It gets 7/10, a good song but not a great song.

Now noise!
Wäldchengarten is Denmark's finest when it comes to noise ambient and this is a soundscape off an EP called Uncomfortable Positions.
Their new album Distractions is released here on the 24th. Woo!

Although, I have to ask, is this song really about what it sounds like, or is this some sort of extended metaphor?

No, not an extended metaphor to my knowledge. Doom is more often than not about setting an atmosphere than making a point, apart from of course the over-arching point of the genre, ie, the world's a shithole so lets smoke dope and listen to old Black Sabbath records. Of course, some metal lyrics are metaphors, even the most over-the-top ones (I know for example that quite a few Cradle of Filth songs are actually metaphorical, ie. From the Cradle to Enslave is about millenial tension, Scorched Earth Erotica is about environmentalism.) But often it's going to be quite obvious if there's a political point. It's all, however, mainly about creating worlds. Either better worlds to escape to, or shit worlds to escape from, if that makes any sense. So of course, political stuff fits there as well.

Wäldchengarten - Lies Got You Into This Mess, But Lies Won't Get You Out

Strangely enough, I was listening to a playlist packed full of stuff like Blood Axis, Lustmord and Navicon Torture Technologies, so this fitted right in. I gotta say, it's pretty much what I would expect from noise ambient, though pulled off very well. I really liked the peak of static in the middle, mixed in with the radio noises and pulling off with a sudden jerk. Nice. Gonna give this an 8/10.

Ephel Duath - The Passage (Pearl Grey)

Alright, I'm going to give my impressions as I listened to this song: Wait this is metal? I can't really hear what's going on, I'm going to turn it up.  Oh! Woah! Metal.  Woah! That is an amazing avant garde trumpet solo.  Damn, that guy has impressive range.  What are they saying?  I'm going to have to look up the lyrics.  Even reading the lyrics, it kinda feels like listening to one of those songs in finnish where the put fake lyrics in front of you.  Oh well, musically this is really good.  Nice mellow break halfway through or so.  With another impressive trumpet solo at the end.
9/10. (I was going to give it 8, but someone just gave a weird look for listening to this, automatic 1 point added in my book)

Also, Khar, do all their songs have the trumpet player in the band, or is he a guest musician for that song?  If he is actually in the band, I am buying some of their music.

Ephel Duath are amazing.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.
