Saw Anthony Atkinson on Friday, supported by a couple of other local acts: Fred Astereo (pretty entertaining) and the Small Knives (snoooooooore). But I simply cannot why people who pay $8 to see a gig, and then talk really loudly through the whole thing, basically ignoring the music.

lololol, I'm trying to imagine a gig where you could talk over the music anywhere but at the bar or right at the back.

Psssh - it's all about being seen/scene at the right gigs! Of course they're not there to enjoy the music, it's just so that they can say 'Oh yeah, I was at that gig' and when asked how it was, can simply regurgitate whatever popular opinion dictates about the gig.
First rule of scenesterism.
