jam bands make me happy

Revenge_Therapist:
You know I don't so much mind the Jam Bands. I do think it's cheating to forget the song. I do so much mind the hippies twirling in circles.

a pack of wolves:
What the hell is a jam band anyway?

spizzletrunk:
It always annoyed the shit out of me extensively that people mention the genre of a band more often than they mention whether or not a band is good.

In other words, I don't like jam bands.  I like music.  If music that tickles my fancy at any given moment happens to be the music of a "jam band", power to it.  It's just silly though to take an entire chunk of music supposedly in the "jam band" vein and discount it entirely.  Not that I'm a big fan of them or anything.

I guess I'm a total hypocrite, though.  Haha.

think this:

--- Quote from: czar0406 ---yeah, the thing about jam bands is that they play 5 minute songs...but take 15 minutes to do so.

i consider jam bands to be an extention from the jazz improv days of the 1960s.  sure, if you do the simple intro>verse>chorus>bridge>verse>outro kinda dealy the song should only be 5 minutes but i appreciate and band that can just get lost in the music.
i play saxaphone and have played in a few local jams (and have made guest appearances with non-jam band .. bands if they want to ... well, ... jam for a set).

i've also played ska, jazz, classical, drum and bass, and many experimental type genres but playing with a good group of guys just can't be beat.  thats where my weakness for listening to jam bands comes in.

i listen to a lot of Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, but the guitar jam bands kinda miss my radar.

--- Quote from: Amsterdarn ---I disagree quite a bit with this.  Like 'em or hate 'em, Phish and the Grateful dead are very different musically.  Yes, they both like jamming and drugs and have obsessive hippie fans.  But that's about the extent of it.  The Grateful Dead were much more feel-good noodling, Phish are much more accross the board, stylistically.  Anything from funky jams to ballads to big ol' vaguely classical compositions.  While there are definite similarities, calling Phish a "poor photocopy" strikes me as just plain ignorant.

My interpretation of the Phish-Grateful Dead connection (and this may be wrong, but I'll still put it out there) is that Phish took a lot of the Grateful Dead feel and made it more radio-accessible.  Whether or not the musicians in Phish are talented, I think they go beyond being a "logical progession from the Grateful Dead" into biter territory.
