jam bands make me happy

yipjumpmusic:
I only skimmed the thread but what czar said plus it seems like musical masturbation; more fun for the players than those listening, at least in my opinion.

La Creme:
It is more fun for the musicians in a jam (speaking as a musician). The secret I think is if the band can make the themes interesting. And CHANGE shit. I hate jam bands that play based on a really goddam simple theme for their whole half hour songs.

My interpretation of the Phish-Grateful Dead connection (and this may be wrong, but I'll still put it out there) is that Phish took a lot of the Grateful Dead feel and made it more radio-accessible.  Whether or not the musicians in Phish are talented, I think they go beyond being a "logical progession from the Grateful Dead" into biter territory.
--- End quote ---

Personally, I thought the Grateful Dead were more radio friendly than Phish, and pretty damned generic. Course, I was listening to music that didn't suck.

Although I do have a place in my heart for Jam bands. Somebody mentioned Oysterhead and the Disco Biscuits, which are both phenominal. The Fearless FLying Frog Brigade puts out some good stuff, Allman Brothers are damned fine, Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains is apparently wonderful live. Buckethead Noodles on his geetar for a while in concerts, would that make him a Jam... artist? Cause most of it sounds metal ish. When I saw Primus they went on and on with songs. And I'm sure I'm missing a ton, but whatever.

yeah man, i like pot too!

first i'd like to say i'm really happy with the way my first "new thread" has developed. call me a dork or noob or whatever i am, but it was a cyber-ego boost.

while it may be that jam bands are more fun for the musicians, i really like that about them. i feel like with jam bands you can feel the energy coming straight from the musicians so even if it's a small crowd it's easy to get lost in the show. they love what they are doing and you can definatly feel that. not that you can't feel energy at different types of shows, but that energy mostly comes from the band indirectly, through the crowd. i feel like you can tell how most shows in most genres are put on for the crowd, but with jam bands it's more communal, the artists are playing because they want to and if you like it, great! if not, then don't listen and they'll still have a great time.
it is definatly helpful, when trying to appreciate jam bands, to be a musician who has experienced the sublime feeling you get from a really good and satisfying jam. you wind it down,(always after at least 10 minutes MIN.) let the last chord die away then look around with a big dopey grin on your face, see everyone else sporting the same dopey grin, and breath a "yeeaaaah" or a bewildered "damn, that was good"

all i know is i can get lost in a jam band vibe regardless of the people around me more easily than other types of music (this is of course dependent on the band, but i'm speaking in generalities)

P.S. Phish, string cheese, widespread panic are favs. phish was first

P.P.S. sidenote:my uncle was in charge of his college radio station and he wouldn't play phish (an unknown name at the time) cause he thought they sucked. haha
