jam bands make me happy
Conatonc:
I'm a huge Phish fan. I'm not a big jam band fan in general, though, because, as said earlier in the thread, I think most jam bands succumb to pointless noodling solos that just go on and on. What set Phish apart from this was the fact that they always tried to improvise as an ensemble and didn't just sit on solos. They were musically interesting and exciting. And I thought that as songwriters, they were offbeat and weird in a way that really appealed to me.
moe., and to a lesser extent, Umphrey's Magee, are the only two jam bands I'm really into these days. Moe. has already put out two albums (Tin Cans and Car Tires; Wormwood) in their career that top anything Phish was able to do in the studio. They really know how to do great song-based albums. Their jamming still falls into the noodling zone a bit too often for me, but the songs make up for it.

does jon todd count as a jam band?
Johnny C:
Isn't it .moe.? They are pretty cool for being geezer-men.
I never enjoyed Phish but I like The Mars Volta, possibly because their words have enough syllables to justify the song lengths.

The thing about moe. and Umprhey's McGee, is that they both really just enjoy getting up on stage and jamming out for 2-3 hours a night. It's all just a big joke, Phish also had that sense of irreverance and that's what really sets them apart from the other bands in 'the scene.' Well, that and the fact that SCI just plain sucks these days. ;)

I dunno, Picture of Nectar is a really good album, and Hoist has its moments. As far as moe. goes I think Dither is their bestest album, mostly because that "In a Big Country" cover is so devastatingly good.
edit: I saw The Mars Volta open for QOTSA and RHCP, they were the worst noise I have ever heard in my entire life.

KharBevNor:
Aren't TMV neo-prog or progcore or whatever these kids nowadays call it? I don't mean to be rude if they have jam roots (I have very little experience of Jam bands at all apart from all the Les Claypool related stuff that seems to count, <3 Les) But isn't calling TMV a jam band because they noodle about as logical as calling Electric Wizard a jam band because they smoke vast amounts of pot?
