This is like saying "I like punk but I've never heard of the Clash."  You don't have to like them, but you damned well ought to know them.  This thread isn't "name your favorite album."  It is "name important indie rock must-haves."  Just as The Clash should be on any punk must-have list, VU should be on an indie must-have list.  End of story.

Hang on, did someone just say The Get Up Kids were the pinnacle of Emotional Hardcore? I doubt the Get Up Kids have ever been near any hardcore in their life!

Merkava:
If that's hardcore, ATDI is a rock covered with a chocolate shell.

Actually, their keyboard player was the drummer from Coalesce and the two bands once released a split together where they covered each other's songs. Damn good record that, probably the best track the Get Up Kids ever recorded. But yeah, they're more indie emo pop sort of stuff (my, what a snappy genre name I've come up with) than emo hardcore.

Jeridus:
uhh... erm... well, I think rather than throw myself into this particular ring, I'll just get back to music suggestions :P

Death From Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm A Machine
Metric - Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?
any Coheed And Cambria (or Shabutie, the eponymous EP of the band that later changed its name to Coheed and Cambria), for the requisite prog bit (TMV having already been mentione, by sp2 I think)
Hot Hot Heat - Make Up The Breakdown
agreeing with others, I am here... Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn (or A Saucerful of Secrets... or both :))
Iron And Wine - Woman King EP

that should do, when combined with all the other good suggestions
