--- Quote from: tedzsee ---I think The Smiths is, like, assumed.

Judging by bgred's initial post which stated that he/she likes The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and The Who, I figured that they may not have known much about the Smiths. You'd be surprised how many people have never heard of them, even though saying the Smiths are good usually goes without saying on this board.

I think if you're trying to expand your music tastes beyond mainstream stuff (nb: the use of the word "mainstream" here is not mean as an insult to anyone or anything :P), it can be quite intimidating to be bombarded with hundreds of bands you've never heard of.

Obviously I'm assuming a bit about bgred here, but I figured that listing a couple of less obscure bands might encourage them to listen to them and then go from there.

Trail of Dead is awesome, but this brings up an important point.

LIST RECOMMENDED ALBUMS.  ALWAYS.

Trail of Dead has done some amazinglyawesomeholygoddamnedgeez good albums.  Source Tags and Codes is orgasmic and classic.  Elena's Tomb and Madonna, both damned good.  Worlds Apart, no.  World's Apart is shit.  You may find the others at a small used shop, but at Best Buy, you're only going to find Worlds Apart.  Which sucks.

This is just one example.  Plenty of bands put out both good and shitty albums.  Jawbreaker's 24 Hour Revenge Therapy is classic.  Their last album, Dear You, was painfully sucktacular.  Rubber Factory, by the Black Keys, was totally classy.  Big Come Up, eh, decent, but not as totally bringmetomyknees awesome.  Metallica, well, that's been beaten into the ground.

List albums, because every band goes through shitty periods (some bands just don't go through awesome periods).

Also, no Joy Division?  I mean, they're not my favorite band, but I'm surprised no one's mentioned them.  I mean, they're sorta staple.  Plus, they good because everyone compares indie stuff to them.  Same with Velvet Underground (Get the VU and Nico album, or White Light/White Heat....both are classic).
