Fun Stuff > BAND
Nickleback is the second-worst band in the world.

--- Quote from: KharBevNor ---A lot of J-Pop, especially the Eurobeat stuff, is pretty bloody dire. There are actually some very good J-Pop/J-Rock bands, but some is the musical equivalent of snorting 4 kilos of candyfloss from a sumo-wrestlers navel.

Oh man, I read this right when I had to answer the work phone. DIFFICULT.
But jesus christ, the things that we're doing to this poor horse's corpse make beating it seem pleasent.
Not An Addict:
--- Quote from: Luke ---What if there was no light
Nothing wrong, nothing right
What if there was no time
And no reason or rhyme
What if you should decide
That you don't want me there by your side
--- End quote ---
See, I think this is where sp2 gets the high school poetry thing from. Martin is using well-oiled rhyming couplets in place of something insightful or unique. We can all rhyme "light" and "right", but what do these lyrics actually mean? And how do they tie in with the emotion behind the song? Judging from the lyrics, this song is apparently about how even the smallest words and actions are extremely powerful, sometimes devastating, but he's using the most bland language to convey this idea. It rolls right off the tongue, in one ear and out the other. If Martin actually wanted to make some kind of impact with his songs, he'd use more forceful, or at least more thoughtful, language.
Also, don't bother defending your band by posting lyrics you like. The opposing side would find something to nitpick in a Shakespeare sonnet.
heretic:
i'm sorry but those lyrics suck. they suck they suck they suck. they don't convey anything. just the same sappy contemplative morose bull. there are no details, no emotions, just questions. don't gimmie some pseudo intellectual bull about that being the point either. if that were the point the questions would lead the listener to a defined end. these are just word that act as something for his moans to pronounce, they have no merit of themselves. it could bend or it could break? bad lyric. it is never defined. maybe you think it just means life? still a dumb lyric, just put in cause it rhymes. overall shallow and boring.
of course, as we all know, this is just my opinion.
sp2:
--- Quote from: Luke ---
--- Quote from: sp2 ---[Coldplay's] music is uninspired.
--- End quote ---
Yeah, because we all know that songs about love, friends, and life struggles are completely uninspired. Good one. Once again, you're striking suspicions in me that you have never bothered actually checking out the media that you are labeling as "shit."
--- End quote ---
The music is uninspired. Not the lyrics. The lyrics are just shitty. The music is uninspired, as it is formulaic and lacks any sort of punch. There are plenty of solf piano-ey songs out there that can still kick you in the ass. Coldplay doesn't do that. Coldplay opts for formulaic and inoffensive. This is not writing music because it's inside you and you need to get it out. This is writing music because there's still space in your pockets for a few more million and you wouldn't mind filling it.
And yes, I've listened to every Coldplay album ad nauseum (emphasis on nausea). My ex-roommate loved the shit out of them, so I'd have to listen to them half the time I spent in my apartment.
Joke's on him. I forced so much Skinny Puppy on his God-loving ass.
--- Quote ---The fact that you'll find a 3-3-2 rhythm in several of their songs isn't simplism - it's the definition of their style.
--- End quote ---
And Nirvana's overuse of powerchords and elementary beats isn't simplistic, it's their style.
Yeah. I call bullshit.
--- Quote ---Shitty high school love poetry, in my opinion, is the kind of poetry that either rhymes words for the sake of rhyme or doesn't rhyme words at all. Poetry of this category can also include the sing-song kind of poetry that has matching numbers of syllables, but doesn't line of syllables correctly.
--- End quote ---
No. High school poetry tends to focus on rhyming couplets with a traditional "A-B-A-B" or "A-A-B-B" or "A-A-B-A" type of structure. It uses limited vocabulary and obvious simile/metaphor. This certainly applies to Coldplay.
--- Quote ---Oh, we all know. You'd probably label anything that you dislike as such, too. Because, you know, any music that actually becomes popular is automatically bad. </sarcasm> (Disclaimer to the rest of you out there: I don't actually listen to Christina Aguilera; I'm just making a point)
--- End quote ---
Ah, the refuge of the thoroughly beaten. I like plenty of popular bands, at least, bands that have been popular in the past. Popularity does not make music bad. Writing music thinking of your bank account and not the music itself DOES make music bad. And that is exactly what Coldplay does. Their music is uninspired and unimaginative, they know this, and they keep on writing more unimaginative and uninspired music because it keeps them in that #1 spot on the bestselling music roster.
