Not long ago I was flipping through the channels on my buddy's TV. I decided on seeing what was playing on Much More Music to see if anything interesting was playing or which bands I used to listen to, had become commercial slaves. And wouldn't you know it, the very next song that played was Power out by the Arcade Fire. I then proceeded to loudly yell "Fucking hell!" while sitting in the middle of the kitchen eating a Nutella sandwhich. This being very abrupt had absolutely no affect on my friends because they are used to me yelling out random things and being "spontaneous". But anyway, it made me sad to think that the Arcade Fire had stooped so low as to have their song played on Much. But in the back of my mind I congratulated them for making it onto the major music scene. Vopice your opinion.

Um. They're pretty bound to get their videos played on networks. it's going to happen to all of your favorite bands. and there's nothing wrong with that.

However, I just feel like that because I am absolutely 100% sure that none of my favorite bands will ever become huge. especially since a good 60% are dead or broken up, and the rest are "uncommercial".

Wait. It's a bad thing if your favorite band gets played on MuchMusic? I...don't understand.

Well there are laws here in Canada that say a certain amount of Canadian music must be played, so the more obscure are bound to get exposure here. That said, The Arcade Fire got popular (and twice as uncool) awhile ago.

More good bands on tv = better.
If playing Arcade Fire means there is 4 minutes less of Linkin Park or Coldplay, I'm happy.

I'd rather see the Arcade Fire than some stupid jerkoffs whining about a girl that dumped them 3 years ago.

Yeah, they've been getting airplay for quite a long while now. Even before the summer started, I remember me being in bio class with nothing to do with our teacher just giving us the remote to the classroom TV. Flipped around for a while, and what do you know? It's Rebellion! Then I go home, flip around with the telly, and what do you know? It's Rebellion again! Not to mention, Devon-the-annoying-DJ is quite a fanboy of The Arcade Fire, and totally whores them out all the time. I love the Arcade Fire, but sweet jesus, I don't need to be told that they are the bestest tr00 rock band of all time and HAS COME TO SAVE THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. Because, it sounds really dumb coming from a Much Music DJ.

So. Inconclusion, my opinion:
Arcade Fire on Much = old news, and is okay
Devon whoring out Arcade Fire = so not cool.

and Modest Mouse
and most other FORMALLYINDIEOMFGZ bands.

I don't pay enough attention to know how much popularity is considered uncool. But Channel 4 have started using Rebellion (lies) to advertise E4 and the new season of Six Feet Under.
I was shocked and awed (and happy).

if a group doesn't change thier sound to make more money, they just happen to get popular, it's being successful, not selling out.
now, if a band were to abandon what they started out doing and adapt  themselves to be more accesable to the mainstream, that would be selling out.

ANYWAYS

If I lived in a world where everybody owned an album by The Arcade Fire, or Death From Above 1979, or Metric, or Modest Mouse, or whatever indie band you want to name, that would be a pretty good world, I think. So I really don't worry about those bands getting airplay (especially on MuchMusic which is a TV channel I love), because I would rather people said "Hey I'll go buy the Arcade Fire album" than saying "HOLY MOLY THAT JESSE MCCARTNEY IS SOOOOO DEEP ZOMGZORDS!"

Was it Monochromatic Stains?

I love that video.

Any idea what Immortal Video it was? I'm guessing Grim And Frostbitten Kingdoms, because that's the least ridiculous.

It should definitely have been Call of the Wintermoon though:

This still only captures the barest fraction of the awesome of Call of the Wintermoon.

I still don't really get this? How is trying to have more people listen to your music a bad thing/selling out? I mean, if I started a band I'd want the whole world to listen, no? At the end of the day, what is the point of art if there is noone to appreciate said art?

I agree if whoever said that if you start altering your music for commercial appeal then you would be 'selling out', but if you're just putting out what you already have...?

Hell, some of the stuff I listen to is obscure as hell. Some of it. on the other hand. is pretty much as popular as music gets. Does that make the latter any worse than the former? Who cares if your music taste is shared by the world as long as it's still music that you, personally, for whatever reasons, find... pff, for lack of a better word: good.

Hell, everyone in the world simultaneously decides to listen to everything on my playlist/in my cd collection I'd be happy, though a little perplexed hehe.

So yeah...

for those of you worried about the arcade fire becoming "popular" and thus uncool, i would be more bothered by the fact they have been in newsweek twice in the past year than the fact that a much music is playing their videos.

also, the modest mouse toyota commerical was when i knew the cat was completely out of the bag there.

Nine inch Nails NEVER gets any airplay on Much or MuchMoreMusic.
The only Tool song that ever gets play is Schism. These bands have huge cult followings, and yet, they get no airplay. Apparently The Arcade Fire is considered disposable enough to be put on Much.

Honestly, they probably are disposable...being indie does not excuse disposableness.
