I have seen so many shoe brands with red soles. I mean I guess Louboutin did it first? I do not know. I even own a pair of yellow ones with red soles. They were $20. Obviously they are not Louboutins. So I was not aware that the red sole meant anything.

I think it is a bit silly that you guys are trying to decide whether or not a tattoo character is fashionable or not.

I can see what BrittanyMarie meant, actually. I looked some up. Unfortunately (or fortunately, considering that they cost thousands of dollars), I think they are not as cute as other platform pumps, particularly the green and white ones I got myself for $25. I will stick with my cheapos, I guess.

Hey guys. For a while now I've been meaning to get my septum pierced but due to continual winter sickness I haven't been able to. Runny nose and all that biz. I think I'm finally over it, though I was sure of this three weeks ago too, so I'm planning on getting it done this weekend. Probably saturday.

Anyway I've got some questions.

I've been told the healing can take 1-3 months. Is this the normal healing time with or without salt soaks? Also to start what gauge should I begin with. I'm wanting something simple.

Thanks guys.

I would say assume 3 months with salt soaks. It will have calmed down long before then, but 3 months should be the earliest you change or remove your jewelry. Also keep in mind that this is assuming you have a proper "sweet spot" and don't have to have it done through cartilage. If it's cartilage, that can very easily be bumped up to as high as 6+ months. Once again though, the problem time will likely just be the first week or so.

Concerning size, the typical starting point is 14g (1.6mm for countries with much smarter size charts) and is a good starting point if you are just wanting the simpler aesthetic. On the other hand, if you plan on going any larger at all (generally I'd say 8g, aka 3.2mm, is the largest you can go without it looking large) you should start at a higher size because stretching your septum piercing will be a good indicator of how much you're actually dedicated to the practice or just how stubborn you are.

Mine is currently at a 12, but I had it a size bigger before. I don't remember it taking excessively long to heal, one month sounds about right. I think by that point I was ready to get something else done.

Here is a terrible shot of my face, but it shows it off fairly well.

Edit before posting: Akblom is totally right right the whole "don't take it out before three months" thing, though. I generally wait until it doesn't hurt at all to touch before removing the jewelry, and/or the longest time period my piercer said it'd take to heal.

It also would depend on the size of your nose, not for healing but for what gauge. I have a tiny itty bitty nose, and a 12g was giant for me, but my friend with a big honker would look silly with anything smaller I think.

edit: hey how cute you are! make that your you as your avatar...avatar...

Thanks for the info guys!

I've looked at a few pictures of 14g and think I'll be getting that. My nose is a pretty average size. Although for work I'm going to have to wear it flipped up because of a no visible facial piercings rule. Will having a larger gauge be a problem for doing that?

You can get a larger gauge and still flip it up. You just have to get a retainer.

I'd also ssuggest having your piercer help you flip it right from the start if you have to have it up for work. That or see if a bullet is an option for initial jewelry. Try and keep it flipped up the entire healing time if you need it up for work. The flipping will just cause irritation otherwise.

Hey guys, do you think it's cliched for me to get my Chinese name tattooed on myself? I was thinking of getting an idiom or something that relates to me instead, but reading Hanzi Smatter and seeing all kinds of horrible Chinese tatts has sort of turned me off to the idea  :-(. I really want to get something that represents my Asian side, but I've no clue.

Some ideas!

There is a lot of fantastic art out there, but if it's something that genuinely interest you then go for it. I will say that there is much better stuff to use, such as some of the stuff amanda linked, but there's nothing really wrong with getting something simpler and "cliche".

This is true only so long as you're massively keen on the design, which really doesn't seem to be the case here. I imagine that if you aren't passionate enough about a design to be able to dismiss the critics it's probably going to get a bit wearing everyone thinking your tattoo is rubbish and that you have bad taste in general. It's unfair, but you're going to get some really negative things thought about you if you get a tattoo like this. You need to be the kind of person who can just go "fuck those chumps" and enjoy your tattoo regardless of what everyone else thinks, and that's not everyone.

Guys I have an overly cliche tattoo. My birds. But they mean something to me and are one of my favorite tattoos. It never occurred to me how cliche they were until after I got them, and I'm fine with that. They are great and amazing and I love them to pieces.

So, Lise, if you want something to represent your Asian side, but I turned off by using the characters, I'd suggest speaking to a tattooist about it. They may have some ideas that would be helpful.

Stating what flavor Asian you are could help us in the long run - I'm assuming Chinese from your post, but it's sort of ambiguous.  If this is the case, I think you should get the outline of China tattooed to a la those state-outline tattoos some people get (Jersey, baby).  You could also try for a Chinese cornucopia - durian, lychee and mangosteen pouring out of a coolie hat. Both of these are - needless to say - full back pieces.

In all seriousness I do not think that you should necessarily disinclude the idea of getting a name tattoo.  You could have a professional caligrapher do a good interpretation of your name, or you could get it written in old Chinese, which I find very appealing and not very boardwalk at all.  That said, a poorly executed Chinese character tattoo is the most heinous crime against body modification since self-administered navel piercings with an unsterilized safety pin.

I think overall, it seems that birds are sort of a trend, but like I said, I'm very pleased with my birds(also thank you for the compliment! I'm all kinds of cheesing right now!), BUT I also don't think its a super terrible thing to get trendy or cliche tattoos, as long as they are something you want. I mean, if you super love Taz and want a tattoo of him why not? So get your birds! You drew them yourself, and I think all of that is fine.

Oh my god.  That has to be a tattooist's worst nightmare.  If I got a state thing, it would be the palmetto and crescent moon and maybe "sic semper tyrannis," but I think too may people would associate it with Julius Caesar (fair enough) or John Wilkes Booth.

Yeah Lise, if you're set on it, get it, but I think that it's sort of a cop-out for something to represent your asiansensation(ahaha I love that rhyme). Like Amanda said there's loads of really cool options, and not all of them have to be big. But as I said if you're set on it, fuck da haters. (I really dislike character name tattoos usually, if you get it done pay for a proper calligrapher like Taylor said)

Thanks for all the replies, guys! I really didn't expect to get a lot of feedback, heh heh  . I do think that my Asian name has more significance that my regular English-given name, but after reading all the advice I'll try for something that's less generic, though that actually is an oxymoron when it comes to Chinese names... heh.

I'm not sure if all of you knew, but Chinese parents will often PAY a professional to select the proper names for their kids. Superstitious Chinese people believe that names determine how lucky you and successful you are, and that if you're cursed with a bad name, your life will reflect that. Hence why they throw lots of money at essentially who I think are frauds... but meh. I'm not sure if other cultures do this, but I bet a lot of them place heavy emphasis on name giving.

I do love all the Asian art that you posted though, Manda... I'm especially partial to Japanese art, though I'm not Japanese myself. I can't link these pics directly (I hate you, flash player), but the Asian tattoos at the London Tattoo Convention are gorgeous. I'm just relieved I didn't cave in and get a Tokidoki tattoo just because I think the brand is incredibly cute (I'm a huge Tokidoki fanatic)... cause I definitely might change my mind about it 10 years from now.

PS: Asiansensation? LOL, I love it!!

Also, what about this tattoo? Who wouldn't want a vagoo in their armpit??

I want a name badge tattoo now, thanks for that...

My older sister insisted on getting an Asian symbol tattoo so I got a Chinese friend's Grandmother to do real calligraphy and make sure it said what she wanted it to, I took her to a decent tattooist, still it looks like a stupid shitty tattoo on her. That might be because she's white though...& it is on her lower back.

I've seen a better armpit vagina. A guy actually had one tattooed in his armpit, and it was horizontal, so when he lifted his arm up it looked like a lady spreading her legs, plus he had armpit hair, so it looked like pubes. It was totally win.

I also knew a girl who had a vagina tattooed on her foot. She would come in regularly to our store all the time, and while discussing her tattoo with a coworker one day he said "I don't like it. I don't like vaginas." Which after I got done giggling, he tried to fix his statement, saying "I don't like vaginas on girls!" which made it even better. Needless to say, we all still tease him about it.

That is better than the normal songs I get, is it real or just in your head? Although I did work with a chef who used to sing "Eliza Day" at me, which I didn't mind. Or changing the words from Tom Jones's "Delilah".

Blaaaaargh
Are you actually part-Asian?

I can already tell you that more salt will not hurt. Sea water is nature's cureall, and that is for a reason. Do you know why no one in the Caribbean has acne? Sea water.

So making a dilution of up to 3.1%-3.8% will not kill you, and in fact might be best. But I am only saying this from a biologist's perspective, not experience.

Edit: That means you can do 4.83 tablespoons of salt per 8oz of water. Like I said, you are ok.

Hey everyone, I need to buy some new bookshelves. When I get back from Ikea and put them together you're all invited to the bookshelf launch party.

Ok, this is the 2nd or 3rd time I've tried posting this so here goes again.

Do a full teaspoon. The only reason I wouldn't suggest higher is because of how much it can dry out the surrounding area which will just cause irritation. If that is too drying try cutting it down some and see how that works. Just make sure to rinse the area off after the soak.
