I think you should go full color. They are comic characters, after all. I don't think it'll look silly.

Now I have to find a good colour artist in Sydney. Where, for the most part, the tattoo studios are all run by biker gangs with the quality you would expect. I'd go to my usual guy but after looking at his portfolio on the website his greyscale stuff is awesome but his colour stuff is fairly average. I guess I'll have to find someone else now.

I really like that one song but honestly Andrew W.K. is kind of a fucking weirdo.

And I don't mean for the bloody nose album cover shot.

Ok so I've been searching around the internet for a few days looking at Sydney's tattoo studio websites and have decided that I'd like to go speak to two different artists and see what they're like to talk to and how comfortable things are, given that I'll be spending a lot of time with them while they do things to my body. Hopefully they are both rad and it will be easy to decide which one I like best. To that end, what do you guys think (oddly your opinions are ones I hold in high regard so...)? I'm looking at Megan at Inner Vision and Dean from Steel Lotus. Both of these studios are in amongst the most popular studios in Sydney if not NSW so I know it's going to be 1)hugely expensive but price isn't really something I'm considering outside of how long it will take me to accrue the required funds and 2)I'm going to have to book like, several months in advance (which I suppose is helpful when considering the cost).

I think I'd go with Megan in this case. She seems to use a lot more colors in general and for a full color comic tat that seems like it'd be fairly important. I also like her art style in general a bit better for this theme.

On the other hand Dean is a bit better with the old school style and that one Mexican themed skull tattoo with the psychodelic color scheme was quite nice with the colors.

But yeah, I'm feeling Megan a bit more for this particular work.

Yeah I'm leaning towards Megan as well but I can't tell if that's because of a bad experience I had at Steel Lotus back when I was wanting to get my first tattoo and I went in to get a quote and the girl at the counter was really rude and wouldn't let me see any of the artists.

I'd say Megan as well. She seems to have a better grasp of human form than Dean does (atlhough Dean's patternwork and such looks pretty good).

Megan's color seems a bit better, from what I can tell. Plus, if I had a bad experience at a parlor, I wouldn't really want to go back, so I'd still probably choose Megan. Unless you don't like her and Dean is awesome, so whoever you like best.

Also, Steve, those plugs are amazing!

Ok so I just got put on a waiting list to consult with Megan for my sleeves (starting with my left arm). I should hear back in about 8 months to find out when I can come in with my reference material and we can start discussing what I want then. I also called a place called Kaleidoscope who specialise in full colour custom tattoos and organised to go in an talk to an artist on Tuesday. Unfortunately their website doesn't have any sample photos but they come highly recommended so it can't hurt to go talk to people about it.

There are only a few really good quality tattoo studios in Sydney. 8 months to get a consultation, if I book in it'll probably be another 12 months before we actually start the tattoo. Hopefully Kaleidoscope are as good as everyone says. On the upside, both people I spoke to on the phone got really excited about the X-men characters idea.

Yeah, that seems a little excessive just for a consult. I've waited 8 months for a booking but never more than 2 for a consult.

Yeah it's pretty ridiculous. I'm really hoping that this place I'm checking out on tuesday is as awesome as everyone says it is because while I don't mind waiting a few months to get started, I need to get more money together anyway, 8 months before I can even speak to the artist about what I want done and then another year before I can actually get it done seems a little much. I'm sure they're very good and all but man, I just don't think I'm that patient.

i am trying to decide on the order of my next two tattoos, and placement. I really want a deer related tattoo for some pretty personal relevant reasons, I'm stuck between getting a doe, which would be more personal, but harder to place/do stylistically, or a deer skull, which would look nicer but be less personal.

Honestly, I think a doe would look loads better. Where about where you thinking of getting it done?

Also, Jimmy, what you should do is fly to America, come to Edwardsville, Illinois, and then go to Evermore. Seriously, Carrie(the owner) does the best color work I've ever seen, and since its such a tiny ass town, she could probably talk to you when you walked in, and then tattoo you within the week. Plus she is super nice and super pretty! She's such a sweetheart.

But since that is not really an option, I would continue to look for places that can at least talk to you soon. Waiting 8 months just to talk is kinda crazy.

Left inside forearm definitely. While not arguing you'll grow out of wanting a neck piece, you should know where your work future (or lack thereof) is headed before hand.

Edit - Also, it looks like I'll be getting the regrowth on my tongue recut at NYCon. I will be available for mockings for being a silly twat and not being able to eat delicious food during the last day.

So Chris and I are lining up sessions for our wedding tattoos soon! We are each getting a small buffalo (inside joke) and I having a really tough time deciding on a style I want. Given these options, any general opinions? Recommendations?

I'm usually drawn to simple lines and wood-cut style clip art, but the painted one is so pretty too...

The simple line work is so much prettier! Colour tattoos without lines I have not seen very many, but I think if you get a good artist to pull it off it would be amazing. Top one I think is way too sketchy lookin' and would just look like a blur if you weren't paying attention.

Oh hey so I went to Kaleidoscope and chatted with Brody about my sleeves and I may have found a tattooist! He's really cool and friendly and seems really excited to do the sleeves for me. He's pretty young though and the portfolio he showed me is pretty thin and some of the pieces there didn't look incredible (though still pretty good, the photos were pretty shit so it was difficult to tell!) but I'm going to get him to do a few sketches and see how they look before I make any calls about it. In the meantime I'm still looking around at other artists but I've got a good feeling about Brody, I don't think he'd tell me he could do it without being able to back that up with a reasonable sketch and I don't think the studio would get an unproven apprentice to do two full sleeves.

I'm currently tattoo-free, I'm considering putting it on the right side of my torso though (on ribs, but kind of where your elbow covers if your arm hangs straight down, if that makes sense). The last one is currently my favorite- I'm scared it will be too hard to find someone who won't botch the hell out of the first two

I really like the movement and pose in the second one. The line work and shape of the third one would probably transfer the best as a tattoo, but the pose is so static and I can't really see it looking good as a tattoo, shapewise. If the pose and movement you see in the second one could be transfered to a simpler line work then yeah!

I took me a really long time --and more than one look at it-- to get the Street Fighter II reference.  That's really kind of a shame too given the number of quarters-that-were-supposed-to-be-for-my-laundry I wasted at the arcade playing that game my freshman year of college.
