Scum - Protest Life

This song is fast becoming my anthem of 2005. The Scum album is so good! Who would think convicted murderers, church arsonists and heroin junkies could make such sweet-ass fucking rock?

"We stand forever,
with hate in our eyes!
We'll keep on fighting,
for all you despise!"

Ooh - that's one of my favourite Shins songs!

The Quintet (a.k.a. Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach) - Jazz at Massey Hall.  Jazz is really the only music I can stand to listen to in blistering heat.

Within Temptation - Gothic Christmas

I've got some time to kill, so I'm building MY Christmas CD for the school common-room early.

"We're gonna have a gothic christmas, that is what we'll do.
We're gonna have a gothic christmas, hope you have one too. Santas gonna wear a black dress just for me and you,
Santas going to grunt in latin and slay a dragon or two

Rudolph he will change his name,
'cos Rudolph just sounds pretty lame,
now we'll call him Ragnagord,
the evil reindeer overlord

His nose it shall be red no more,
it shalt be blackened to the core,
his eyes will glow, an evil glow,
to guide the chariot through the snooooow..."

Brilliance. Unfortunately I only have this, 'Merry X-Mas' by In  Flames, 'No Presents for Christmas' by King Diamond, 'Red Water (Christmas Mourning)' by Type O and Nightwish's cover of 'Walking in the Air'.

Johnny Vanderslice is fucking sweet, I've still yet to find anyone else who listened to him. Mass Occult Suicide Figurines can get repetetive in spots, but Cellar Door is really interesting. And dark. Interesting and dark.

AFX, Hangable Auto Bulb reissue
I was a little surprised to hear that Warp was rereleasing both Hangable Auto Bulb records on one CD, and while most of my Aphex Twin collection is on vinyl (for nerd-bragging purposes), I decided I'd rather get the CD for $9 than the two records for $150 each.

Take Me With You . . . is seriously probably the best work they've ever done.  Better even than The Hill for Company.

Would it help your jealousy if I told you I went to the launch of the record, and they played with a full band (including trombone)?

I mean, you can't hate this song. It's just so.. catchy.

"Come along, come along, end the Vietnam war,
Dirty smart bombs, and napalm, the US Army Corp.,
Come along, come along, hey baby don't be late,
Come along, come along, let's celebrate Watergate."

YES!!!  Will Oldham is one funny bloke.  I'm frequently amazed by how few people seem to realise this.
