--- Quote from: pat101 ---I'm from Winnipeg and we've got a few local bands that aren't bad, The Weakerthans are alright, as well as The Paperbacks who I saw opening for The Hold Steady a few weeks ago.
--- End quote ---
A few bands that aren't bad? You do realise Propagandhi and Submission Hold are from Winnipeg, don't you? Hell, I once travelled all the way to Amsterdam just to see Submission Hold play, living in the same town as them would be like a dream come true. Well, maybe not since round here we have:
Humanfly - 'Led Zeppelin in a blender' was the best description I ever heard of them. http://www.calculated-risk.co.uk/
Red Stars Parade - Crushing stuff on Dry Run. http://www.myspace.com/redstarsparade
Bilge Pump - Kings of DIY rock. The NME once called them unlistenable guff, so you know they're good. http://www.gringorecords.com/
Polaris - Best band in the UK? http://www.gringorecords.com/
Tangaroa - Slow grind? Don't ask how, but it works. http://www.myspace.com/uglypeoplebreedfast
Stigma - Two-piece harsh business. http://www.traumatizedzine.com/stigma
The Dauntless Elite - One of the world's few remaining good melodic punk bands. Ex-Joe 90 and Fig 4.0 I do believe. http://thedauntlesselite.com/
Chickenhawk - Big fucking riffs and a man in mask being a wee bit worrying. http://www.chickenhawkdotcom.co.uk/
Executive Distraction Tasks - Start. Tech. Stop. http://www.executivedistractiontasks.co.uk
Birds of Prey - A big noisy mess. http://www.myspace.com/theendofmusic
Agent of The Morai - Sludge. No more need be said. http://www.myspace.com/theagentofthemorai
Like A Kind of Matador - Heavy prog kind of stuff. They're on Tumult, so that should give you a good idea of what they're about. http://www.myspace.com/lakom
Duck Stab - No frills fast hardcore. Ex Driven Down, Broken Access, We Are Corpses!!, The Devils, Charlie Don't Surf. Can't go too wrong really. http://www.myspace.com/duckstab
Jean Genet - Daft, sexy, danceable.
Antisocial Mixtape - Acoustic punk. If Rumbleseat had been a couple of kids from Pontefract, they might have sounded a bit like this. http://www.sixstringrevolution.tk/
Eiger - Just listen. http://www.thankyouforcavingmyheadin.com/
The Seven Inches - Catchy, silly indie pop songs.
Whores Whores Whores - A bit like The Locust maybe. Don't let the hideous name put you off. http://www.whoreswhoreswhores.tk/
Kill Manticore - Mudhoney, The Stooges, sci-fi and serious alcohol abuse. http://www.myspace.com/killmanticore
Cowtown - Math rock meets pop.
David Thomas Broughton - A guitar and a good voice.
Spasticated Razor Masturbator - Death grind smash chug fast tits. http://www.myspace.com/spasticatedrazormasturbator
D-Rail - How metalcore ought to be done. http://www.myspace.com/drail
Last Good Sleep - Rob of EDT's solo post-rock doom project.
Reth (well, about half of them live here anyway) - I like grind. This band grind well. http://www.myspace.com/reth
And that's by no means all the good ones, I haven't been to many indie gigs for a while so I'm sure there are more good bands in that style I haven't heard. Also, Lance Uppercut are supposed to be good and I liked the Mercaptan demo but haven't caught them live yet. And there are quite a few bands not quite going yet. Holy Crap! My Face! sound good when I hear them wailing away in my basement, the new band from the ashes of Pontefract/Leeds screamo kids We Are Corpses!! sound promising as do Dungeon Nun, Lucy from Kill Manticore and The Seven Inches probably formed six new bands this morning and I've got a couple up my own sleeve who I don't think will be too shabby at all.
Tactical Error:
I had the chance last month to see a former coworker of mine and his band play, all original songs, no covers, for a small charity concert. They call themselves All Weave Herd and they put on a damn good show for being such a short set.
Another band playing the same concert Death Valley Dragline is equally worth seeing live.
Kai:
Pack of Wolves: I do believe you've mentioned Duck Stab before, and I think I asked about their name and if it happens to be fro mthe phenominal Residents album. But anyways, are they good? Are they anything like the Residents? If not, do they still stab ducks?
a pack of wolves:
I'm afraid they're sod all like The Residents. They're just fast, stupid hardcore. But they are good, like any band who had a song about the sheer awesomeness of Leeds Six would be. As to the duck stabbing... Well, there isn't much I'd put past those boys except eating it afterwards.
Also, their singer snores like a bastard. This is irrelevant, except for the fact that he's passed out on the living room floor again and the noise is getting on my tits. And I just know he's going to wake up and break into Chapelle show quotes at some point.
