Everyone has them: CDs you bought that embarass you when you look back on them.

I'll go first: I have two Linkin Park CDs. In my defense, I was 14 and was having emotional problems. I just haven't gotten around to getting rid of them in 3 years.

I didn't purchase it, but I am embarrassed for liking Evanescence. (I probably would have bought it if I, you know, had money)

My very first CD purchase was "Americana" by The Offspring when I was fourteen (A very common exuse) and well, how was I suppose to know there were better things? My younger self would surely have hated Birchville Cat Motel or Skullflower anyway. I also had a huge collection of Greenday CDs which I sold a long time ago. I've kept the Offspring disk simply because it was my first. What's there to be embarrassed about? I don't see any point in guilt for my musical past.

I'm not really embarrassed by any of my musical purchases. I liked them when I bought them, and then my tastes changed, so now I don't have them anymore. Is that so bad?

And I say that having owned Insane Clown Posse's "Amazing Jeckel Brothers" back in 1999.

I mean, my music is only embarrassing when I still own it and it contradicts a musical image I have for myself. Like, say, the Yellowcard album I have that doesn't exactly match all the indie stuff I have. But I figure, if I can't deal with the fact that not all my music is "cool," then why bother listening at all?

What the hell guys? You're all way behind the times.
I got that kind of crap when I was twelve. By the time I was 14 I was listening to Dead Kennedys, Rancid, Sex Pistols and NOFX. Some might argue that's just as bad but they don't know how much fun NOFX is.
I'm 18 now by the way so I suspect we're about the same age.
Current embarrasing CDs? NONE! We have a record store in Auckland that buys second hand CDs for a decent price so the bad ones are all long gone. Yussssssssssssss.

I had a Good Charlotte and a Linkin Park album in 2001/2, in my defense I was 11/12 and very confused. I still feel the shame.

I bought Avril Lavigne's debut CD. I think I was 13 or 14 at the time. She was just so COOL and PUNK RAWK.
Nearly 5 years later I still have it just because it's such a nice little addition to my CD collection. I love the looks on people's faces when they browse. Kind of like a booby-trap.

@Rizzo: Man, I was a single child whose dad was obcessed with the Beatles and ONLY the Beatles and my mom listened to.. Enya, and Shania Twain, and I think that's it. I did not have cool parents or friends who could introduce me to good music at an early age, I had to discover that stuff on my own.

Fortunately, all my cringingly awful musical taste occurred when I was a young 'un, and buying cassettes instead of C.D.s was a viable option. Hence, the Phil Collins stuff is sitting in a drawer somewhere at my parents' house, far far away from my precious (and awesome) C.D. collection.

. . . Damn, that reminds me - next time I'm back home I really need to find my tape of the K.L.F.'s White Room. That is one seriously cool album.

Anyway, my embarassements. Bon jovi's slippery when wet when i was 12, haven't played that one in years obviously. The lost prophets cd last year, i liked burn burn a lot so i bought it. It now is in Austria with a friend who does like em. The cd was utter crap though. And i have spice world by the spice girls. Bought that this year because the spice girls were fun! I don't really regret buying that one...And from what i read above I guess i'd see Offspring - Smash as a mistake too but even though the lyrics annoy the hell out of me i can still enjoy that one and I don't give a fuck that they're sell-outs, that cd was good

Urgh, I've had my fair share of bad album purchasings. For instance, PJ and Duncan - Psyche! and even *shudder* 5ive. Not all pop malarchy though. Hoobastank's 'Crawling In The Dark' single and Limp Bizkit's 'Rollin'' singles were both dreadful purchases.

well... i bought "americana" too back in the day and i even bought "conspiracy of one", but i'm more ashamed to admit that i bought "crush" by bon jovi when it came out ....

... and yes, i bought other cds by the offspring too, but their first albums ARE good. :P

Nothing wrong with it. But one day a guy on a forum was telling me how superb the arcade fire was and that their album soon will be named a classic like nevermind or ok computer while I find the arcade fire a bit..ehm..unspecial. After all the Franz Ferdinands and Killers and Kaiser Chiefs I want something more 'raw'. So even though I don't really dislike the arcade fire I keep on slagging them. (heh, by chance i went to some site where they had music by a band called 'the vacation' writing that they were Billy Idolish and that live the singer acted like an Iggy Stooge/Mick Jagger amalgam. so i wrote to that guy who loved the arcade fire that I was looking for something more like that if only they didn't have that billy idol influence. I downloaded their tracks anyway and I love them to bits now..)
And while you think at the drive in would be my music it somehow annoys me anyway.
And Avril..well..you're right to put her in this topic. But all in all i have no real problems with your taste in music.

Yeah... not proud of those two.

I do, however, own the first Audioslave album, and I'm certain my roommate would insist that I be ashamed of owning it, but it is actually one of my favourite CDs... and I fully intend to buy their most recent album too. Chris Cornell + Rage Against The Machine = The Win.

The Arcade Fire are not really anything like Franz Ferdiand or Killers or Kaiser Chiefs, but lets not start with this argument.

On topic: I'm not embarrassed by anything in my collection, because even though I may not listen to some stuff in there much any more, it was all still a part of my musical growth and experience. If I enjoyed an album once, I'll hold onto it. The only CDs I ever sell are the ones I never listened to enough to get attached to.

Having said that, MC Hammer and Ace of Base are a couple of early music endeavours that are pretty amusing to me now.

there is no argument. I agree that it's quite different, but just like all those Brits (yeah, killers are american, i know) they're all quite 'safe'. Not coldplayesque, but lacking chaos anyway. Sideways: Audioslave is cool..though the second album only has man or animal as killer. And despite the appearance of Like a Stone the first album isn't as good as superunknown (in my opinion) and perhaps not even as good as the self titled by rage..
Dara: What's wrong with the Eurythmics? (okay, I admit, everything ambiquous (apart from boy george) gets my thumbs up but still, I don't see what's so wrong with them)

I would say that you don't really get any safer than Audioslave.

I disagree entirely with your appraisal of the Arcade Fire, but as I say, I don't want to argue about it. Too many people have preconceived ideas about them and it will just spark a stupid flame war.

Jesus I must like EVERYTHING EVER, because I own a bunch of the stuff mentioned in this thread and still like some of it. The only two records I have that I've segregated from my collection for fear of contamination are Significant Other by Limp Bizkit and Human Clay by Creed.

I've also owned the soundtrack from Cocktail no less than three times, as well as the first MC Hammer album.

And I've got some Dexy's Midnight Runners, some Gordon Lightfoot, and a couple pop-emo CDs like the Used and Thursday and the Coheeds, but I actually like all that and don't really care if people are upset by that. And if you don't like Dexy's you're just inhuman.

Anyway, I own a Funeral For a Friend CD ( I think it's 'Casually Dressed and Deep in Conversation'. It was bought for me by a friend, politely accepted and never listened to) Korn-Korn which I bought about 4 years ago because I'd heard and liked 'Blind', and listened to once, because all the other songs were like shitter clones of it, and Nirvana-Nevermind, which I bought about a year and a half ago because it was hyped as great and on a ridiculously low-priced special offer, and because I'd never actually heard any Nirvana except for Lithium being covered by a local band and the snatch of Smells Like Teen Spirit on the soundtrack of Moulin Rouge! (Not knowing what it was). Haven't been able to sit through the whole thing ever. So. Fucking. Boring.

Everything else I'm not sorry about. My shit music phase was pretty mild, and I've never really bought that many CD's.

I have Limp Bizkit - Significant Other, Blink 182 - Enema of the State, and Evanescence - Fallen. Beyond that, I'm not really perturbed by my CD collection - which reflects my musical tastes before I discovered p2p in 2000 or so. Plus I think they're balanced by CDs like Down On The Upside, L.A. Woman, and The Presidents Of The United States Of America.

Yeah Khar, I mean, you can dislike them (hell, I hate the them too) or Nirvana but that doesn't mean that people'd be embarrased because they have em because both are quite accepted by people who like alternative music..

EDIT: I didn't read the opening post. Thought it was music about which you 'should' be embarrased instead of which you ARE embarrased about.
