Essential metal albums?
KharBevNor:
Probably. I can maybe see it along-side, but I was never a big Anthrax fan.
Catatonik:
I suppose it depends on how I am looking at essential.
If you are talking the classics that defined genres, then you guys pretty much got them down.
On the other hand the twenty albums I consider MUST owns is slightly different in perspective.
Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors
Strapping Young Lad - City (I also think this belongs on the above style list because of it's influence)
Ayreon - The Human Equation
Therion - Deggial
Devin Townsend - Ocean Machines
Voivod - Nothingface
Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Nevermore - Dead Heart, In a Dead World
In Flames - Whoracle
Hypocrisy - Abducted
Death - The Sound of Perseverence
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales
Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses
Nile - in Their darkened Shrines
Samael - Eternal
Bloodbath - Ressurection Through Carnage
Soilwork - Natural Born Chaos
Sigh - Imaginary Sonicscape
KharBevNor:
I'm generally agreeing with the bands but not so much the choice of albums. You'd chose Deggial over Theli? Whoracle over Clayman (or indeed In Flames at all...should be swapped out with an Edge of Sanity or Dark Tranquillity record imo)? The Sham Mirrors over Le Masquerade Infernale? Ressurection Through Carnage over both Nightmares Made Flesh and the Breeding Death EP? Morbid Tales over To Mega Therion? (Come on, Jewelled THRONE!) Well, fair enough. It's all a subjective matter, certainly, and there is a lot of play in some of them. But Aieee, there's not enough black metal on yon list. Much as I like the modern melo/prog scene, I don't think it's necessary to own two mordern-ish MDM albums and only one proper(ish) black metal album, especially with so much related stuff like Hypocrisy and Opeth there. 'Black Metal' by Venom should at least be on the list.
I heartily agree with the Sigh and the Ayreon in particular though. Sound of Perseverance I recognise as good, just I never really got into it. Voice of the fucking Soul though...and why I do think Opeth are getting very over-rated nowadays, there is still always a soft spot in my heart for Blackwater Park.
Actually, maybe I should just put together my own fucking list :)
Catatonik:
I'm actually in agreement on the MDM statement, but those albums hold a major place in my heart and I was being a touch favourtist.
As to the album agreements, I could justify my choices, and I bet you could justify yours, and in essence we'd be both right.
Too justify one though. Ressurection over the Ep and Nightmares because it's the extended love of the EP, with Mikael on vocals (the original incarnation) and thus best sums em up IMO. But I actually think that you could trade off for Nightmares without a blink (Peters vox are so inhumanly sharp).
If I were to alter anything it would be to remove In Flames and Bloodbath, add Limbonic Art - Moon in the Scorpio and Sleep - Dopesmoker.
None the less, my personal tastes asides, I think Venom belongs int he seminal metal albums listing as opposed to the list I would use to expose people to my peculiar tastes.
I mean...Venom ARE one of those bands that anyone wanting to learn/know metal should be exposed to.

--- Quote from: onewheelwizzard ---Am I the only person here who sees a problem with the listing of only one of Black Sabbath's first 4 albums?
--- End quote ---
Not as much as I have a problem with nobody mentioning Heaven and Hell or Mob Rules.
Edit: And Anthrax is a little too punk-influenced for me, to be honest.
