So I'm doing this media studies project on the rise of Canadian music into the mainstream in the last few years.  I've covered the basics.  The whole country music thing, the whole OMG ARCADE FIRE thing, brushed the surface of the Montreal music scene's rising popularity.  What I'm looking for is another angle, per se.  I'm so clouded by my own musical preferences (and laziness) that it's getting difficult.

So I pose this question:  Good Canadian music, mainstream or otherwise?  Any genre.

GYBE and the spin-off bands- A Silver Mount Zion (and various versions), Set Fire To Flame, Fly Pan Am.  I hate to link to wikipedia but what the hell, check out Constellation - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constellation_Records

or there's the more general http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_music

If you need a quote to kick off with my favourite quote about Canada is -

“The tragedy of Canada is that it had a chance to end up with French Cuisine, English Culture, and American Technology, but ended up with English Cuisine, American Culture, and French Technology”

Is that a question?

Are you looking for contemporary stuff? The New Pornographers, Broken Social Scene, err, lots of other ones that I can't think of right now...

Montreal bands that I like would be: The Stills & The Stars (though I don't know how popular they are throughout the country)

And sometimes you just need some good 'ol BNL or Great Big Sea (just to lift the spirits)

Celine Dion is not a band. She is a horror and I am glad she is in Vegas for the next couple of years and we don't have to see her. Maybe one of Siegfried and Roy's tigers will maul her. That would solve many a problem.

No spite for Mr Adams? As horrible as Celine Dion is she makes for great drunken Karaoke. Besides Siegfried and Roy was cancelled in 2003 so I think she will return to torment your lands unharmed.

Agreed.  From One Chord to Another is a power-pop classic.

In fact, Canada was a power-pop sparkplug in the 90s.  You've got Sloan, Age of Electric, Treble Charger, Limblifter, I Mother Earth, and, well, Matthew Sweet (though he's actually from Nebraska but was much more successful in Canada than in the US).  SOOOOOOOO many Canuck Big Star fans!

YES!

ZOMG! Someone else knows The Holy Shroud and likes them?! Marry me! I don't even know if you're male or female and I don't care. Marry me.

Also, if you like The Holy Shroud, you should really check out North of America, two of the guys in The Holy Shroud used to be in that band (and apparently are again) and their last album (Brothers, Sisters) shares a couple of similarities. That is, if you don't know them yet.

I'm not quite sure about the date yet, I'm rather busy with uni work right now and there's this pesky ocean between America and Europe too...
Given the whole Holy Shroud / NoA thing though, I think Halifax would be a good option for the where.

Man, I can't believe no one has mentioned Skinny Puppy(or any of the offshoot bands for that matter).

In a similar, if stranger vein, try Prospero, Antigen Shift, Iszoloscope, vo1d, and for the darker dance party person in you, Ayria.

Of course, there's also the many Bill Leeb/Rhys Fulber and friends bands as well.  Front Line Assembly, Delerium, Conjure One, Noise Unit, and Decree.
