Introducing the musically damned to good music (Help!)
Praeserpium Machinarum:
I burrowed some Skyclad at the library, but then again danish libraries are awesome.
Taking his tastes into account, I would say:
Radiohead
Soundgarden
Grateful Dead
Jefferson Airplane
Rufus Wainwright
The Go-Betweens(might work, if he can take the 80's sound)
Prefab Sprout
Ron Sexsmith
Nick Drake
Djosos Krost(it is dub, reasonably close to dancehall, I hope)
Stars
Dizzee Rascal(akin to The Streets, the vocals might scare him off though)
Goldie Lookin' Chain
Neil Young(the Springsteen)
The Byrds
Big Star
KharBevNor:
It's the crowning irony that Skyclad are actually HUGE in Europe (only Metallica outsells them in the metal category in Greece) but totally unknown in the UK. Especially as their songs make constant use of British slang and other references and tend to be about things like Thatcherism, London, Merry England and what rotters the French are (though I suppose most Europeans can get behind that one).
Kai:
I also heard they're huge in like, Brazil or some shit.

Yeah, they do okay here. Meanwhile Martin felt he had to leave the band because he wasn't getting enough money out of it to live on.
People should buy more music.
KharBevNor:
Metal Fact #1: Everyone is fucking huge in Brazil and Japan. EVERYONE. Bands that barely ever enter the United States will do whopping South American tours.
Metal Fact #2: No one is huge in Russia*. That's still where all the scariest fans come from though.
Actually, metal is just wierd like that. The most charming thing about it, I think, is the global appeal it seems to have. Metalheads are fucking everywhere.
Also, from what I've read Martins reasons for leaving were more complicated than that. There was friction developing between the members of the band, and, relevantly, I remember reading in an interview shortly after that the refusal of the rest of Skyclad to travel to South America for a tour because they were worried about their safety there prompted a massive row which crystallised his desire to quit. By all accounts, Martin has an absolutely corrosive personality. He certainly does have a talent for breaking up really great bands. He's becoming a full-time writer now, they had an interview with him in Terrorizer.
*Except Gorky Park, and they SO don't count.
