Title: Secret Santas -- UNVEILED
Post by: Edith on 05 Nov 2008, 08:35
I'm ready to organize this to try it again.

Here's the deal. DO NOT POST YOUR HOME ADDRESS IN THIS THREAD.

You have until November 23rd to sign up. You sign up by PMing me with the following information:

1. Your name and mailing address
2. Whether you can send internationally
3. Anything about your hobbies, interests, allergies, likes or dislikes that you think might be relevant for your secret santa

On November 24th, I will PM everyone to tell you who you are Santa-ing. You will have until December 13th to mail out your package.

Please do not sign up to do this if you will not have money or the time or the transportation to be able to get stuff or to send it. It really sucks to put a lot of time into something and then not get anything but a bunch of apologies about how you didn't have time and you're really really going to send it tomorrow and then more apologies and it eventually never ever comes. That is lame.

On December 29, I will post the master list of who was secret santa for whom. That way, anyone who hasn't sent their gift out can receive public humiliation.

If I forgot anything, please let me know and I'll amend these rules!!

Edit: Price range: be reasonable. Don't spend more than you can afford. Someone really poor who makes cool shit will spend less than someone who works in Big Oil but has no free time. By the same token, don't be stupid.  If you buy someone a $50 videogame and get a homemade paper basket of cedar potpourri, then you shouldn't complain because you're kind of a dumbass for spending that much on a secret santa thing.

You only have to give it to me, and I'll only give it to one other person. It's all cool.

We're not lunatics! Well, mostly.

I am in on this even though I really don't have much money so whoever I get will probably just receive some cookies. If that is alright count me in!

Just make sure they are nicely padded and aren't international.
Title: Re: Secret Santas

Okay. Sorry international QCers, but it looks like none of you will be getting my delicious cookies.
Title: Re: Secret Santas
Post by: 0bsessions on 05 Nov 2008, 12:23
I'm in, but I think an at least vague gift criteria should be set. Like, if you're just going to send someone a Snickers bar, why bother? And I'd like to make sure we have an upper limit so nobody goons out too bad. I don't wanna feel like an asshole for probably not spending more than fifteen bucks or so on any of you assholes.
Title: Re: Secret Santas
Post by: tania on 05 Nov 2008, 12:34
i also don't have a lot of money so i will probably take the creative route and use my artistic skills to make something. as long as  everyone here is okay with receiving one of those lame "look, it's the thought that counted" gifts, i'm in.

Post by: Blue Kitty on 05 Nov 2008, 12:42
I think I know what yelley will get if she receives RedLion's address.  A restraining order.

I would love to do this, but I'm lacking in funds even for my families presents this holiday season.
Title: Re: Secret Santas
Post by: Katherine on 05 Nov 2008, 12:42
We do a Secret Santa thing at work every year, with a $10 limit.  A couple of years ago, my Secret Dickwad Santa gave me a "$10 off a $10 or more purchase coupon" for the Gap.  A free coupon that he or his girlfriend got when they bought something at the Gap, and he gave it to me, someone who does not shop at the Gap.  Anything would have been better than that, really.  A cat litter scooper, slightly used, would have been a better gift than a useless coupon.
Title: Re: Secret Santas
Post by: Lines on 05 Nov 2008, 13:06
Last time I did it, we exchanged boxes of various items. Nothing expensive, just a box of random goodies the recipient might like.
Title: Re: Secret Santas
Post by: Edith on 05 Nov 2008, 13:12
Yeah, I didn't want to put a spending limit because, seriously, if someone sends me a couple skeins of Noro yarn that costs $18 a pop at the store and then decided she doesn't like it because it has too much red, I'm not going to feel guilty that she spent so much. I would also not feel bad to get a box full of lemon pie that has oozed all over but is wrapped in saran wrap and therefore not too germy. I would love to get a box of random leftover resistors and capacitors from a ham radio project that I could use to make earrings.

So, don't spend an unreasonable amount, and don't be lame. Try to send something you think the person would like, but don't go broke doing it.

(this is an example of how not to do secret santa)
Title: Re: Secret Santas
Post by: fatty on 05 Nov 2008, 16:09
My guide to secret santa:

A parcel 500 - 750 grams costs $20 - Aust to USA
If the present cost between $10-15, that's $40-50 all up.
For some people, this is already more than you might be able to spend.

So if you start by figuring out how much postage will cost, you have a price base and a weight limit. I think tihs is a good limit. Saving money on weight is a good idea.

I reckon a good way to value a present is against something you may already do. Maybe you can compare secret santa to hanging out with a good friend or going to dinner with them for their birthday. $40 for me (in Aust dollars) would be going out to dinner, maybe buying my friend a drink, and getting the train home. If someone spends less but puts more thought and effort into it - it is of equal value.

Also, Sean, if you end up being my Secret Santa the Zebra Cakes do not count as part of the gift.

This sounds really exciting! But please, if Jens signs up too, don't make me his secret santa or vice versa (although I don't really think that would happen, but you know, just in case).

Internet gifts hooray! Let's hope none of the gifts will get stuck in the intertubes, folks.

I'd sign up but I am terrible at this thing. We did this in gradeschool, and I forgot about mine. I felt so bad about it, I went home and convinced my folks to get the raddest thing ever for her. I don't recall exactly what we got, but it was at least fifteen dollars higher than the maximum set by the teacher.

Also PM me if you discover that you can't meet the DEC 13 MAILING DEADLINE. If you can't do it, there's still time to ask someone to swap and you can drop out. Remember, it's no fun to put together something thoughtful for someone and then never get anything in return. NO FUN AT ALL.

Title: Re: Secret Santas
Post by: Edith on 25 Nov 2008, 06:31
They are not completely random. A lot of people had a lot of stipulations, like "Oh, Edith, please make sure I don't send to somebody with allergies" or "Oh, Edith, could you be a dear and make sure I send to somebody I know", and then of course there was the "I can't send international unless it is to such-and-such person because I really like them."

I didn't cater to everyone's whims. Mostly I just figured out geography and went from there. In one or two cases I think I even screwed that up. This was way more complex than I thought it would be! But it was fun. I liked putting it together.

If not, I'll just have to order online. Yays!

I'll be cutting it a tiny bit fine with posting deadlines but I'm every kind of broke now, since I spent last month's wages on flights I couldn't afford. Ah well.

Dear Secret Santa

Even though I dislike Twilight, that doesn't mean I hate the world.  I like almost all colors, soft fuzzy things, videogames, cacti, octopuses, science, animals (but not too much).  That doesn't mean anything about your presents, however.  You could get me pretty much anything and it would trump what I got last year, in the 'People from the Internet' quota.  Seriously, anything in a nice package would be beyond awesome.  I would even like Twilight, because it precludes some thought into my sense of humor and the fact that I'm a teenage girl (its presupposed demographic), and of course, there's always regifting.

Thanks so much, and I hope that clears stuff up.

Phase two: Albanian chocolate - fahahahahahahaha Albanian chocolate OH THAT'S RICH

I think I got some crap, for phase 1: gift. Phase 2: chocolate has been abandoned, since, well, there is no such thing as good chocolate here unless you buy imported stuff which you can get anywhere.

WHAT DID YOU GET ME SHANE

I blessed your state with my presence, isn't that enough?

Step one: Gift purchased and shipped
Step two: I baked cookies, but I either used too much or not enough of something and they came out horrid. Sorry, gift recipient. You are not getting any cookies from me.
Step three: Learn to read a fucking recipe. Do not make same mistake next year.

BY THE WAY. To save money (I am really stretching right now), I had the gift shipped from the website to said recipient's address. So if you get something from somewhere you did not order from, that's me.

That's cool Shaniac.  A lot of the Secret Santas are doing that this year. It's not lame.

I am being sincere, but I'm just pointing out that I don't think it's lame because a few people have PMed me to ask me if it is lame.

A calender (which we needed anyways. Fantastic!) that was part of a aboriginal fundraiser for the 2010 Winter Olympics. It has a different symbol for each month and it rocks. Also the bumper sticker for the tattoo shop, which after looking up Dave Shore's work, I approve.

Thank ya and good job philharmonic!

Guys, I think I have said this a few times in Gabbly but I am SO HAPPY to see that everyone has taken Secret Santas so seriously this time around. Every time someone posts about the rad thing their person got, I just get really happy. It's like Christmas!

That said, if you haven't sent out your gift, you need to do it NOW. You are already late. Don't forget, I'm posting the list of who should have sent to whom on December 29, and if your person hasn't received it by then, it will ruin the surprise!

What you see there is a bag of homemade butterscotch cookies (soooo butterscotchy!), a bag of homemade (yes, homemade) oreo cookies, a North Dakota snowglobe*, and a book with a great story in it and about it!
You can also see the very nice letter that made me both laugh out loud and go d'aawwwwwwww! Also seen is the best wrapping paper ever.

Liz, thank you very very much. You are the BEST.**

*The snowglobe is on a coaster because it leaked in transit. You were very clever to have put it in a ziplock bag. Brains, beauty, and talent. A triple threat!

Dear my secret person:
Due to two jobs taking up literally all my time, your gift has not been sent. I am hounded by guilt about this fact, while at said jobs and unable to do anything to remedy the situation. But I have this afternoon off, and your gift will be purchased and sent.
Love and apologies,
Rosie

I fear that my gift was not as awesome as the ones that have been received. However! It is still a gift and I thought it was quite cool.

I'm looking forwards to getting a gift from the internet :-) And since the college secret santa thing was messed up by the person who came up with the idea suddenly buying a gift for someone she wasn't assigned (because she is her "best friend") I'm pleased to be doing it with another group of peoples.

I got a gift today! It was from Pen!

She went all out!

Wow!

Here it all is laid out!
I got some candy in a cup, some marshmallow fluff, some hot cocoa, a laptop w/ a laptop cooler, and my cat!

(actually not those last two, they were just in the photo)

And in the card was written this!

Thank you so so much Rachel, it's been a rough couple of weeks and this has helped tremendously. It will probably be the best thing that will have happened to me this holiday season. You are an amazing person.

So, technically not a secret santa, but I wanted to post that because I love it so much. It's so great.

(also as you can see the handle broke off the cup in transit but it is still 100% useful)

66% of my gift is being sent out this afternoon. There is a note inside explaining where the last 33% is.

I'm a liar. The gift was sent out yesterday afternoon, but there is no note because I forgot to put it in before I wrapped it all up in tape. So.

There's another third of the thing coming separately, person who doesn't know I'm talking to them.

I got your 66% yesterday! Yay chocolate and fuzzy socks! I'll take a picture when the other 33% arrives.

I went to the post office near my work today to mail my gift, but the post office is small and they don't have an electronic sender and the line was really far out the door, so I'm going to the post office near home that DOES have an electronic sender and I'm mailing it tonight/tomorrow.

Okay, so I can read my PMs on my email notifications but can't compose new ones on my phone so I have to wait for my power to come back on which could be a couple days. Sorry to clog up the thread with something I'd rather do via PMs.

Rodrick: your secret santa mailed your gift and it was returned to him/her.

(S)he verified the address with the PM, which I forwarded directly from you.

Did you move or what, dude? Let me know so your secret santa and I can figure out what to do. It may mean a slight delay in my releasing the master list. It might not, though.

By the way, I've been composing this while sitting on the toilet. Damn but it's cold without the furnace on; the vent is right beside the toilet so I usually have a comfortably warm seat.

For all the people stressing about their package not arriving, here are some notes from my experiences:

- Sending from Australia to the US takes about 14 days, the closer you get to Christmas, the longer it takes.
- Sending from the US to Australia takes about the same, sometimes a little longer than two weeks, depending on what type of postage you use.
- Sending from Australia to the UK takes a bit over two weeks.
- Sending from the UK to Australia takes a bit over two weeks.

I am really not sure about UK-US postage, but I assume it would be faster that UK-AUS etc.

I am sure all the packages will get there eventually, but the closer you get to Christmas, the worse the postal services get.
Title: Re: Secret Santas
Post by: Ladybug on 22 Dec 2008, 12:54
And as for things from the US to Norway, it has taken everything from 1 week to 3 months for me, while stuff from Hong Kong usually takes about 9 days, stuff from the UK to Norway takes about 10-14 days... I just got a DVD from the US on Saturday which had an ETA of January 3rd and was ordered a little over a week ago. Soo, basically, it is all a mess and makes no sense. And then you add in the Christmas-factor.

Guys! I got my present today! It is awesome.

Thanks clockworkjames. It is awesome, as I've already told you.

Customs stole some of it though :( boo. Everything arrived except the super cute bear, which is a heat pack. Customs have it in quarantine because it is a wheat heat pack thing and apparently it could infect Australia. I get the option of them sending it to me, without the bits they don't like for free, destroying it, or re-exporting. I think I might just get them to send it, and I could restuff it and make it all cuddly again.

Here is a picture that cwj took before he sent it all, I'll post a better one up later. :)

I got two things of tea (black cherry and rose), chocolate crammed with chili pepper extract (um, holy fuck it's tasty), two mix CDs, a letter on a roll of toilet paper, and an apology for a scarf, which was apparently hijacked by his brother. The hat on the right was the one Yelley knit me.

I've listened to the "neon disco" CD, which is REALLY good. I'll have to listen to the other one later today.

I am most certainly going to have to do this next year (if it's organized again.)

I would have loved to do this but I knew from the day it was posted that I'd have absolutely no money to devote to it. It's been way too tough to get a job this year.

Here's to hoping that next year will be better economically so I can get people cute things!

Aha! It was nobo! Thanks nobo, you're a really cool Polish dude!

(your name wasn't really attatched to it at all, so I didn't know whom it was from)

Heyooo. A very well deserved thank you to my (not so secret) santa. As it turns out it arrived today which was one day late for my birthday. Unfortunatly I'm a 2XL. So a shiny new memes t will instead go to my wife. (I of course had to explain to her what it meant)

Who is camuscando? Methinks that person just joined the forum long enough to say they would do this and then went awol.

Also, kris you must hate patrick forever.

Say they would and receive an awesome present.

Yelley here is a thing: if you give me your address, I will be your not so-secret out-of-season santa, seeing as camuscando was the broken link between the two of us.

I didn't get mine either but I'm blaming the Royal Mail for that and I still live in hope, it's not unheard of for post to depart from a UK address and take a nice round-the-world trip before arriving at another UK address two years later, with a tan and lots of photos of unsuitable men it met along the way (and possibly syphillis).

Dicky you can send me something, I won't turn it down. :-D

Im sure I remember Roddy saying he sent yours.  I remember him saying what he got you so that must mean he has done something about it anyway.

Yes, Edith told me that he had told her (this sounds like a junior school playground conversation) that he had sent it on December 22nd, so it's not at all surprising that it isn't here yet, since it appears that all the postmen have had a twelve-week Christmas holiday.

Can you tell I'm not enamoured with our recently nationalised postal system?

And yet hilariously, my package from Australia got to Roddy in 10 days.

Oh I totally forgot about this thread! I was going to post here when I noticed Arthur received the package, but then I got distracted and stayed that way for uh, a few weeks. Anyway, glad you liked the painting and CD Arthur! I was a bit worried about it getting there in one piece, so I am very relieved.

Also, kris you must hate patrick forever.

Not really! His reasons for not getting stuff done are pretty solid, and I am currently blaming the post system for screwing up (he sendt stuff a month ago and it still hasn't arrived).

Doesn't stop me from feeling really shitty, I don't care how many times you've told me not to worry.

Oy! Patrick! For the 100th time: Stop feeling shitty, you have no reason to!

(Also, our recent arrangement could make us both win Secret Santa twice. I am excited about turning worst case scenario into best case scenario, even though it is a very unlikely scenario. See this is fun, not shitty.)

I would still totally be pissed off at Norway's postal service if that happened.

Also, to answer you, Shane, no, it's still not arrived. I am not worried though because I have only recently (read: last week) recieved something I ordered from Amazon in November.

Haha I bet the guys at the embassy where your proxy address is are just dicks and hold over your equipment for months 'cause they don't like hearing your music down the block.
