everybody has at least one. that one song that all summer long, when you are driving with the windows down and the sun is up, you and your friends crank up loudly and sing along to. or, if you have no friends, you turn it up anyways and sing along alone and feel okay about not having friends because the weather is beautiful and your summer song is on.
this year i think the summer song is going to be 'skylark' by arrah and the ferns (thanks tyler). in close second are 'the sound' by human highway and 'will you return' by the avett brothers.
what song is going to be your soundtrack for this summer?
-
I could name so many, but my key one is 'Summertime' by The Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
-
"Peace, Brothers and Sisters!" by Colour Haze and alternatively any Black Moth Super Rainbow I can get my hands on.
-
Probably the entire Mezmerize/Hypnotize album by System of a Down.
My friend and I learned the harmonies a couple years ago, and this is probably the last time I'm seeing him, so yeah.
-
Modest Mouse...
Pretty much anything by Modest Mouse.
If I had to pick one, 'Heart Cooks Brain'.
-
Most Broken Social Scene songs, anything by The Apples in Stereo, most every Pavement song and "Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles.
-
There's so many...
Probably "Young Adult Friction" off the new Pains of Being Pure At Heart.
With a close second being "I'm On A Boat." Hehe.
-
seconding the "anything by Black Moth Super Rainbow" sentiment.
almost anything by Of Montreal ("Lyrsergic Bliss" espescially), Akron/Family's "Love Is Simple" (yes, the whole thing), and Eddie Cochran; particularly "Summertime Blues" and "Cut Across Shorty"
there are, of course, way way more but those are the first couple that come to mind at the moment.
-
for me it is "silky (no homo)"
-
Akron/Family's "Love Is Simple" (yes, the whole thing)
Agh, I can't believe I forgot this. Their self-titled is spectacular, too.
-
yeah, i really like the first couple tracks of their self-titled but i always end up loosing interest as it goes on.
same thing with their newest one.
-
The entire Veckatimest. I'm listening to it right now (it leaked in high quality) and hooooooooooly dicks. So good.
-
"Infinity" by Queens of the Stone Age has been this song for me for ... 5 years now? 6? At least 6 come to think of it.
-
As far as songs that actually name-check summer go, my perennial favourite is "Saints (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bt5MWCwFhCI)" by the Breeders.
Generally I tend to listen to more jazz in summer than in winter - if the weather's not too hot then I'll throw the windows open and blast out some Charlie Parker or Clifford Brown/Max Roach, or if it's too hot outside then I'll shut the house and pull the blinds down and chill out to Lester Young or Stan Getz or Ben Webster. Long summer nights are best accompanied by either Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy, Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George & Ira Gershwin Songbook, or Mis'ry and the Blues by Jack Teagarden.

This!
That being said "Poughkeepsie" by The Lemonheads has been a favorite of mine since I started college, since I only really spend a lot of time in my hometown during the summer. I also listen to a lot of Ted Leo during the summer because the heat reminds me of the time I saw them play an outdoor show and it was 100 degrees out.
As far as songs from this year, "Now We Can See" is obviously the jam.
-
OH! And the entire Brightblack Morning Light s/t. When I listen to it I think of the heat rising off the pavement in Chicago as a band of teenagers dressed similarly to the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar walk through the haze to a hidden creek in the city.
-
One of my favorite summer traditions is to drink beer while blasting White Light/White Heat on my patio. That's a hell of a summery album for me.
-
"Infinity" by Queens of the Stone Age has been this song for me for ... 5 years now? 6? At least 6 come to think of it.
ooh, along those lines "Lost Art of Keeping a Secret" and "Feel Good Hit of the Summer" and pretty much anything off of Rated R is GREAT for summer car driving music.
-
Beulah and Sea & Cake are two peerless indie bands to explore this summer.
Beulah are so excellent for summer.
-
OH! And the entire Brightblack Morning Light s/t.
Just checked out a few clips and they're sounding great! Cheers for the recommend...
Reminds me vocals-wise of a couple of things I generally put on rotate in summer: Spiritualised's first album and/or EPs around that time; Koushik.
Other than that, I certainly listen to more reggae and pretty much any kind of dance music. R&B on hot summer evenings.
Beulah and Sea & Cake are two peerless indie bands to explore this summer.
Sam Prekop's solo records are pretty good for summer listening too.
-
Perfect! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zW8AQgc8Z-M)
-
Beck with coronas and barbeques and limes is pretty awesome.
Especially Guero, but Odelay is pretty good for it too.
-
any Black Moth Super Rainbow I can get my hands on.
that should do it for me.
-
Tommy, I think you've just turned into my Mum by listening to elvis costello, talking heads and the b-52s.
Slanted and Enchanted is my favourite summer album, although summer isn't really that different from winter here.
-
The entire Veckatimest. I'm listening to it right now (it leaked in high quality) and hooooooooooly dicks. So good.
Seconded. Also both White Rabbits albums.
-
I would like to second BMSR, Beulah and Beck.
I'd like to add the Avalanches (duuuuuuhhh), up in flames by Manitoba (now caribou, all snaith's stuff is wonderful for summer), Dead Meadow- yeah, pretty much anything that's fuzzy and stoner-rock-like.
-
Tommy, I think you've just turned into my Mum by listening to elvis costello, talking heads and the b-52s.
What's it like having a cool mum?
-
uhhhhhhh
(http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/1394/monuwu5.jpg)
DC knows how to rock a summer tune.
-
Beulah has been my summer band for the past two years and that probably won't stop this year. Also, Sloan!!!! The minute I hit June I am blasting their discography again.
-
haha beulah and sloan were pretty much what i was blasting out of my boombox purse out at the park the other day
-
Wait, wasn't Sloan the name of Ferris Bueller's girlfriend?
-
I third (or whatever) Beulah. Ozma is another great summer band, too. Both of those have been summer bands for a few years now. Lately so far this year I've been listening to a lot of old Green Day, 60s girl groups, and Tiga, thanks to Emilio.
Also, "In the Summertime" by Mungo Jerry is always good for summer.
-
I've never heard Ozma before, but back in high school, a friend of mine put one of their stickers on my Strat.
Honestly, that's it. I thought it'd be more exciting. =/
-
For some reason I am blasting the first three Elvis Costello records near constantly this year.
This Years Model is probably in my all time top twenty records. It's a thoroughly vicious record but it still makes me happy for some reason.
WOOOOOO (http://www.winnipegfolkfestival.ca/wp/2009/05/13/elvis-is-in-the-building/)
-
Pretty much anything off "Pleased to Meet Me" by The Replacements. Even "Skyway," which manages to sound summery AND wintry at the same time...
Seriously, when I finally get my lazy ass around to learning to drive (I'm 21!!!), the very first song I'm gonna be playing after I get my license is "Alex Chilton"!!!
-

:-o :-o :-o
-
If I had to pick one new 2009 album to listen to this summer, it'd be Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. Shortly followed by my surfer tunes of Julie Ocean.
-
Right now, that 2009 album for me is John Vanderslice's "Romanian Names".
-
Ooh, really? It's good? 'Cause usually I'm down with Vanderslice but I was really disappointed by his last one.
Anyway, it's coming up to winter here which means the new Great Lake Swimmers album has come out just in time.
-
Lost Channels? I didn't think much of it.

I thought that one was alright. I saw him right after it came out and he played mostly older stuff, though. I'm digging Romanian Names a lot, however!
-
Lost Channels? I didn't think much of it.
I quite like it. Not as good as the first two but a step up from the last one.
-
I smell me some Mike Kinsella.

which part of my post do you find triply-shocking?
-
Mostly the driving bit; I've never heard of anyone that age not knowing how to drive yet.
-
I have quite a few friends in their 30s who can't drive.
-
Is this for reasons outside of laziness?
-
Am I the only person here that really enjoys Jack Johnson during the summer especially?
-
Some people are made really uncomfortable by the responsibility of driving or have some sort of phobia that prevents them from really learning; other people live in urban settings where public transportation is extensive enough that learning to drive is, though perhaps useful in an auxiliary capacity, practically unnecessary.
-

yeah, this more or less - i'm just finishing uni in the next coupla weeks, and while i've been here, there's been no need for me to drive. i prefer walking anyway. i've had a coupla driving lessons from my dad, nothing major though. probably gonna take a bunch of lessons over this summer, hopefully i'll be driving by the year's end. well, if i can afford a car by then anyway!
oh, and back on topic - the new Riverboat Gamblers album is a pretty awesome summer record.
-
I could name so many, but my key one is 'Summertime' by The Pharcyde and Sublime
Awwww yeaaaahh!!!
(Fresh Prince is awesome too.)
-
Sonic Youth is real good summer music, for me. "Sugar Kane" especially.
-
The album "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" by Neil Young.
I feel like Beach House should sound more summery than they do, you know, cause they're named Beach House? Same thing with the All Girl Summer Fun Band. They're kinda summery, but not enough to merit putting it in the title.
-
Is this for reasons outside of laziness?
Most of them is ideological (i.e. pollution is not that good) + living somewhere practical to get around by bike or public transport (i.e. easy to stand by ideals that don't make your life harder!). One is neurosis.
Are confused people in North America? I was amazed by how car-centric most suburbs / urbs (heh) were in the US, only been to Toronto but don't remember it being much different.
Annnnnyway...
Going back to the very first post, it's not something to sing along too, but the closest to something me and my friends would drive around to in summer is the KLF's Chill Out. Such good road trip music. Better after dark, admittedly.
-
I nominate Ladytron for Summer Urban Night-Time Driving Music.
-
See the problem with where I live, my age, and me getting a job, is everything that makes me want to get a car. I am totally for riding my bike to reasonable distances, but it comes down to the fact that I am getting a job about an hour and a half bike ride away; my parents aren't constantly there to give me a ride, nor do I want to ask for one.
I don't want to keep this thread off topic so, pretty much the entire Silent Movie album by Quiet Village.
-
Sounds of Summer by the Beach Boys.
Also, "Good Day Sunshine" and "Here Comes the Sun" by the Beatles.
And "Summer Song" by Joe Satriani.
-
With a close second being "I'm On A Boat." Hehe.
I will never understand why people think this is funny. Seriously this song is like the second or third to worst thing I ever heard of. And I use "song" loosely.
mmmm american football in the heat
oh man, football in august. good times.
I could name so many, but my key one is 'Summertime' by The Pharcyde and Sublime
Awwww yeaaaahh!!!
(Fresh Prince is awesome too.)
Hate to nitpick, but are you talking about two different songs, as in "Summertime" by both Sublime, and by The Pharcyde? Only because I was going to say "Doin' Time" by Sublime, but I think we're thinking of the same song here.
-
Almost anything by the Beach Boys.
If you've heard enough of their catalog, you'd know that's not true.
-
Is this for reasons outside of laziness?
Uh, not wanting to?
-
Anything by The Weepies
El Guincho or Coconot (Same person except he has a couple of bandmates in Coconot)
Basically i would say that i listen to more country/folk/blues during the summer with a bit of electro thrown in for variance.
-
Julia is making a summer song '09 predictions: Lisztomania by Pheonix. You are gonna go to indie rock clubs and see bad and drunken hipster dancing to this pop gem. I call it.

Being that I steal all my music, I've never seen that album cover. Now it makes so much sense. It's an amusement park.

I download a lot of my music as well, but man am I totally ANAL about getting high res covers for all of it.
-
Please don't quote the post above you. That album cover has been in 3 of the last 4 posts now not including this one.
-
I nominate Ladytron for Summer Urban Night-Time Driving Music.
Anything by The Weepies
I second these two as well. Even though "Antarctica" is more of a winter song (I put it on a winter mix!), the rest of Hideaway is great for summer and I'm sure I'll be wishing it was colder on the days where I feel like I'm going to melt if I step in direct sunlight.
-
Actually, i'd say Say I Am You is better for summer songs but then again i prefer that album anyway.
-
oh man i don't know how i neglected to mention oh no! oh my! as summer music. listening to this makes me wish i had a summer boyfriend to walk hand in hand in the park with.
in fact, i think i am going to throw it up in the mediafire thread so everyone can feel the joy.
-
Pretty much any Passion Pit song. They're upbeat, optimistic, dreamy.
Check out Manners, but DEFINITELY check the Chunk of Change EP, much better as a whole.
-
Being that I steal all my music, I've never seen that album cover. Now it makes so much sense. It's an amusement park.
Well, Avery Island isn't, actually, if that's what your'e saying is an amusement park. It's a salt dome island in Louisiana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avery_Island).
-
DAMN
-
That's also where they make Tabasco sauce!
As for summer music, I definitely tend to listen to a bit more folk than usual i think. I made it a tradition since I got my license (going on the third summer) to spend the first really nice summery day driving around (mostly on the Garden State Parkway) listening to Born to Run. For some reason (this is really really lame) I usually listen Dashboard Confessional's A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar towards the beginning of the summer, but I think this is because it reminds me of a crush I had one summer a few years ago. I'm sure there's a bunch of other music I'm forgetting.
Also, "I'm On a Boat" is great.
-
I'm surprised nobody said Summer Madness by Kool and the Gang. There's a pretty sweet remix to the original. Just some nice music to listen to while just chillin' outside and enjoying the day or night :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4j2slR2Amk (Extended mix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsP9PUpIPBM (Remix w/vocals)
-
Ah good call. Nightmares On Wax's 'Night's Interlude' is basically a medley / mash-up of 'Summer Madness' and the instrumental bits from Quincy Jones' version of 'Summer In The City'. That's a touch summery.
-
FUCKING THIS!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viuGhdeLXHo)

I find nothing wrong with this.
I have a soft spot for Dashboard Confessional...
-
If there's one rock song you listen to a bunch this summer make it Dananananaykroyd's "Pink Sabbath (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Mu_VWdI-5I)."
-

-
Have you guys heard of a band called the Little Ones? Their Morning tide album makes great summer listening.
-
the album Let's Cut The Crap And Hookup Later on Tonight by Marah
always a fun summer one
Hard to Explain- The Strokes, Country Home- Neil Young
also lots of Lifter Puller. and Atmosphere.
-
(http://www.rockandreview.com/blog/assets/content//images/zero_7/zero_7_simle_things.jpg)
Been my Summer album for 8 years. I'll probably reup it to the Mediafire thread in a day or two.
-
Torche - "Meanderthal", The Sword - "Age Of Winters", Lifetime - "Jersey's Best Dancers"
Those three albums do it for me.
-
oh fuck yes that Torche album!!! and another album that came out on the same label at about the same time - "We Are Above You" by Clouds.
-
Ah good call. Nightmares On Wax's 'Night's Interlude' is basically a medley / mash-up of 'Summer Madness' and the instrumental bits from Quincy Jones' version of 'Summer In The City'. That's a touch summery.
Wow, I got to check this out. Thanks for the heads up.
-
Thirding "Meanderthal" by Torche. It's probably just the most positive upbeat doom metal you can listen to, as oxymoronic as that sounds. It fucking rules for summer (or any time).
-

I'm listening to End Theme right now. Fits summer pretty well.

YES
Plus the videos are effing awesome, and really fitting, and even tie in together!
"Healer", the rockingest track on the record, gets a video of the guys just ROCKING THE FUCK OUT:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxiVmPomJEk&fmt=18
"Across The Shields" gets a much trippier treatment though, and it works perfectly!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgvqEJstNrw&fmt=18
-
boys of summer, the dj sammy version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INuxqqlT7UI)
the ataris one is good too
-
Highway Star when driving in summer.
Hell, for driving at any time.
-
"oh, there's legwork" by none more black.
-
"Constructive Summer" by the Hold Steady.
-
The Unicorns.
-
I was recently surprised to find out that Explosions in the Sky are great to listen to on a sunny summer day outside!
-
I've found that Aces High by Iron Maiden is a great summer song, as is Constructive Summer by THS.
-
The Dirty Projectors
-
Hate to nitpick, but are you talking about two different songs, as in "Summertime" by both Sublime, and by The Pharcyde? Only because I was going to say "Doin' Time" by Sublime, but I think we're thinking of the same song here.
EDIT:: We're talking about the same song.
-
almost ALL of the new Idlewild album. for a band who've always sounded so wintry, it's weird to hear them in such a summery mood, but god-damn it's a good album!!!
-
uh, definitely all of siamese dream.
oh, and "back on the chain gang"
-
oh, and van morrison's "astral weeks"
duh duh duh
-
Polvo-Fast Canoe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qN0bTBt8oKs)
and Bedhead
-
oh, and van morrison's "astral weeks"
duh duh duh
I always associate Astral Weeks with the fall.
Maybe just because I associate good things with the fall.
-
Bedhead
He asked for Summer, not Winter funeral.
(Yes, I still think Bedhead is boring.)
-
If it is a summer night at sunset, the most perfect song ever is "Redhead" by Songs:Ohia. If I'm ever out driving or walking at that time of night I have to put that song on.
You should too.
-
Bedhead
He asked for Summer, not Winter funeral.
(Yes, I still think Bedhead is boring.)
Bedhead is fantastic! And how can it not be for summer, though they really do work for all seasons, and all parts of the day. Still, you can't disagree that Fast Canoe's opening guitar riff isn't absolutely drenched with the North Carolina sun.
-
End of the Line - The Traveling Wilburys
Looking Out My Back Door - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Walk of Life - Dire Straits
