Actually Lady Gaga is making an absurd amount of money being totally and completely insane. On the other hand, it rules because it gives us some completely ludicrous spectacles to marvel at. Like, it's kind of amazing how quickly her videos went from being nominally about music to being about how many times she can change costumes in four minutes, but it's good because her three-minute-long glitz bombs are usually way more interesting than the songs themselves.

I like Lady Gaga not only because her songs are really catchy and super fun (and I agree with Kieffer that Bad Romance is a fantastic video) (I've liked all her videos) but also because I tend to like anything that subverts hegemonic femininity. The rumors of her being a post op transsexual make me like her more. This is also part of the reason I like Dolly Parton so much as well.

The Gaga rumor is just a rumor, not true. The fact that some people think it is and she's still selling tons of records? That's huge! You don't? Maybe not, but she's been pretty coy about it in interviews and she seems like the type to pull a stuntperformance art piece like that. Like anybody who writes a song about the paparazzi, she knows that all publicity is good publicity. Sure, having an imaginary penis won't help her sell records directly, but people will youtube the video so they can talk about the rumor, and in doing so be exposed to the music. It's like Ricky Martin's gayness all over again. Cept this time the rumor's aren't obviously true. And the music sucks.

Aside from the razor blade sunglasses, she's not really that great fashion-wise either.

Tommy, I think it goes back to what Scarred said, you do kinda get the feeling that she's pulling a prank on the music industry. She's only straight up said the video for Bad Romance is about, metaphorically, how the industry simulates human trafficking. More directly, I think it has partially to do with the fact that she dresses like a pointy hipped sex android thing, all angles everywhere. It's kinda the same as why I like Dolly Parton so much too, Dolly directly went super feminine, almost grotesquely feminine with the big boobs and the big hair and the big lips. Gaga's the opposite, instead of exaggerated curves she rocks exaggerated angles. From Feministing, "her often physically distorting costumes show that the pursuit of the feminine ideal is far from natural." The other thing is her hypersexual image, which is kinda funny because she tries to play it like it's no big deal but she knoooooooooows, she knows people will make it a big deal

It's only in sitting here and listening to acoustic lady gaga that I realize I never want to post about music in this forum again. It's actually a pretty awful experience all around, and the forced justification to discuss the things that I may or may not like is incredibly repelling. Yes, I do need to consider that the site and comic were launched as an indie-elitist haven, but given that indie-elitists tend to pride themselves on their intelligence, the total lack of tolerance is quite indicative of the opposite. It's like when atheists take their beliefs to a dogmatic level only comparable to radical muslims or the catholics without the slightest touch of irony.

That said, Lady Gaga's new cd is really great. I get the selling factors and the cult of personality that surrounds her, and I am thankful knowing that she's talented enough to back up the hype. I'm calling it now that she'll be around for a while, barring unforeseen extreme events.

On the flipside of overexposure, after 2007 being dubbed the year of Timbaland, Shock Value 2 has been an underwhelming pile of shit, with the only mentionable collaborating artists being Chad Kroger and an army of pre-legal teenaged girls. Result: generic and played out, even for him.
