You guys have a lot of fucking posts

Professor Snuggles

Like, 13000 posts is a lot of fucking posts, man.

Professor Snuggles

Also it's impressive/crazy that Ray and I are still on the first page of people who post the most considering he quit forever ago and like, I've been banned for like a year or something.

Professor Snuggles

Anyway what I'm saying is one of you guys who is an admin should probably give me a custom title, because that sounds awesome.

Also, maybe post less? Like there aren't any threads how are there 13 thousand posts to make.

David_Dovey

I was gonna criticise you for making an immensely shitty thread and then criticising the quality of other threads but I like the idea of that "Board Theory" thing and hope it does interesting things so basically you're breaking even here.

It's lame that I got pretty excited when I realised I'd made it into the top 10 postcounts isn't it

I mean really that thread wouldn't have been made if I hadn't made this one first, just cuz the fact that this community used to be such an understandable and straightforward place to me is what really caused me to remark on the post-counts.

It's like, as I move into this new decade I am remembering that I have been posting on this message board for close to 7 years now, which is like, a small amount less than a third of my life, and yet for some reason the fact that Harry has 11000+ posts is just totally unbelievable to me.

Like I know he's been here, and posting, but I guess I thought all the post counts must have been wiped at some point for some reason because it is really hard for me to comprehend that people have made that many posts on this message board.

Yeah no I mean I definitely understand that my checkered history here changes the game in my case but even if you added up all my gimmicks and all my accounts and whatever I don't think I'd be at 13000. I might be close to 10 so there's some perspective there but still it's just a lot.

Also I am not criticizing threads in this thread although I have in the past it seems kind of pointless to me to just complain about shit without trying at all to make things better and I know that there's no way anyone is gonna take that seriously this time around, I'm like the boy who cried "you guys are faggots" but what I was really trying to say was there just AREN'T threads. Like the front page is pretty standard.

And probably in 100 plus pages of relationship thread you can add up thousands of posts, but, it also seems boggling to me that anyone reads that thread outside of checking to see if people have responded to their posts about their feelings, so...

Yeah I mean I dunno, man.

David_Dovey

What trips me out is that none of the super high postcount people have ridiculous post per day counts. It's usually between 5 and 6/day, which is entirely reasonable, and that these huge postcounts are merely a result of simply having been here a long-ass time, like somewhere between a quarter and a third of yr life. That's ridiculous! What makes a person keep coming back to these places damn near daily for four, five, six years?

I'd be super surprised if some jokers hadn't written theses on this sort of thing (like, definitely more than one thesis. For sure). Someone dig those up for me.

See now we're back to board theory!

Also Tommy has 14000 posts, he just hides it well.

David_Dovey

Yeah screw tommy, what a cop-out.

Anyway, I think you're underestimating two things here:

1- The amount of sway/respect you still get around here, particularly among boarders who matter (no offense if you're a boarder that doesn't matter )
2- The amount that people actually read threads, as opposed to skimming for something worth talking about. I don't necessarily mean people are only looking for stuff directly about themselves, more just something they actually can reply to. I usually skip a post if a cursory speed-read doesn't impress me.

13k is pretty low, especially when you look at the posts/day. which is good news, i suppose, it shows most people on here are actually being productive in other ways and not spending all their time on here. another board i post on people will "celebrate" every 10k posts and the top poster has something like 47k on his current account.

scarred

We recently had a thread where we talked about how long we've been logged in, in terms of hours, and it kind of blew my mind when I actually looked and saw and contemplated the fact I've been on this website for a cumulative total of 49 days. Granted, some of that could be shaved for me leaving my browser open and leaving the room and stuff, but still. Dang.

My wife's main concern at work these days is the use of electronic communications in higher education, and she has written papers on its use in assessment and teaching, and its effect on outcomes; but a board like this, being (in her view) essentially aimless or trivial navel-gazing, would be beneath her interest.

I am actually honestly surprised that mine is only 81 days because I feel as if I am on here like 80% of the time I am awake, and I've been here for years and years.

I have so many posts because I can so rarely resist the opportunity for a cheap and obvious joke.

I could easily write my dissertation on something like this in the field I'm going into.  I actually had a paper proposal on social construction of group identity on web forums accepted to a conference last year; I didn't end up doing the conference, but still.

the above is a demonstration on how to get thirteen thousand posts with little or no effort

e: ok cheap jokes aside, the difference between this and other forums is that i actually post in multiple places on this forum. i've got posts in almost all of the subfora i think (i'm not sure that i've ever posted in the forum that was art & drawing), and i check music, entertainment and the i guess tech/video game forums as often as i do this off-topic section. discuss i check less often but i still poke my head in regularly. and i think the reason i do that on this forum and don't really do that in other places is that the community here is different and i'm more interested in talking with them about a diverse array of topics in those other subfora, so i have a lot of potential conversations going on at once. it's likely the same for a lot of folks, i would think.

I was a little surprised to see that I've been on for about 128 days.  I've finally reached the upper echelons of posting, and I'm only at 4 or so posts a day, compared to the old days when I welcomed every one (then again there haven't been as much of those and it's mostly hidden thanks to being lumped in with QC Discussion)

Yeah, I have seen some forums with 100k+ posters in only a few years because they don't have an irc channel or anything like that, they just post shit back and forth all day

tania

this is my 6th year on this forum and i know my (relatively) low post count is mainly due to the couple of times that i left for a really long time but regardless, i think i've maintained a pretty steady presence before and since. you 10k+ people are just obscene.

I've only been logged in for 17 days in five and a bit years so I feel vindicated that I'm not a complete sellout. I've also left a couple of times so who knows. In saying that, I often feel there's not that much to say or that much worth saying on a lot of threads. The majority of threads in most subs aren't really things I'm into so I more or less only stay for the people.

I've just been over to another forum I occaisionally frequent and the top poster there has almost 47000 posts in a little under four years. Frightening really, although punnage and spree posting is a part of the culture there.

In comparison, this place is nice and slow and I really like that, give you more time to take things in and enjoy more of what people have to say. Mind you, I do enjoy a drunken, wikipedia fuelled fish pun fight from time to time.

I am constantly amazed at how low my postcount is - I feel like I spend a considerable dollop of my time on these forums, considerable enough certainly to warrant more posts than the digit displayed to the left of this post. I do tend to keep my more trivial trivia to the Meebo though - so I would certainly agree that the presence of a chat forum keeps the post-per-day in check.

I do worry, in my more egocentric and pessimistic moments, that the real reason that I don't appear on anyone's list of "strong boarders" is that I am incapable of making a lasting impression and that my presence here is barely notable. Thankfully I don't remedy this with self-serving threads about myself - the darker moods of self-interest often pass quickly with me remembering about the spectacular times I had with forum members in for'n parts and the memorable hijinks that ensued (though that is probably a remark best saved for expansion in the 'Board Theory' thread).
