favorite cover songs, anyone?
« on: 10 May 2006, 23:33 »

So I was reading the Cheesy Pop Tunes thread and thinking about Come On Eileen, and starting thinking about how the Save Ferris cover of that song is totally one of my guilty pleasures.  And then I started thinking about other exciting covers of songs, and came to the conclusion that I need more of them.

One of my personal favorites?  Get Him Eat Him covering The Magnetic Fields' "Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side."

What about the rest of you?  What're your favorites?

Exodus - Low Rider (War)
Nevermore - The Sound of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel)
Alex Skolnick Trio - Electric Eye (Judas Priest)
Iron Maiden - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (Black Sabbath)
Death - Painkiller (Judas Priest)
Testament - Holier than Thou (Metallica)

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any of the bootlegs of Dream Theater covering the entirety of Dark Side of the Moon or Number of the Beast, so I can't say how good those are.

I avoided groups with members of the original bands: Dio covering Rainbow or Black Sabbath, Star One covering Ayreon, Dream Theater covering Liquid Tension Experiment, etc.

Schneider TM - The Light 3000 (cover of The Smiths' There Is A Light That Never Goes Out)
Curtis Mayfield - We've Only Just Begun (Carpenters)
Cat Power - I Found A Reason (sorry to any die-hard VU fans)
D'Angelo - Feel Like Making Love (Roberta Flack)
Einstürzende Neubauten - Sand (Lee Hazelwood & Nancy Sinatra - no one mention Slowdive's redundant version of 'Some Velvet Morning', please)
Chaka Khan feat. Melle Mell - I Feel For You (Prince)
Rickie Lee Jones - Rebel Rebel (David Bowie)
Nina Simone - I Put A Spell On You (Screaming Jay Hawkins rocks it too, but Nina just goes to another planet towards the end of her version)
Bauhaus - Telegram Sam (T-Rex)

..and direct from the cheese thread:
Soft Cell - Tainted Love (Gloria Gaynor)

And I don't listen to The Beatles much, but their version of 'Twist & Shout' is certainly the definitive one.  Their version of 'Money' is great, as is that distracted kinda punk version of it... who was that?  X-Ray Specs?  Nah, surely not... I should just google.  [Flying Lizards, it turns out - got a big fright when I saw my own name listed among their members?!]

nada surf - if you leave (omd)
neutral milk hotel - i love how you love me (phil spector)
nico - fairest of the seasons (jackson browne)
stars - this charming man (the smiths)

a friend of mine did a fairly respectable acoustic cover of new order's "bizarre love triangle" a while back, which i also liked quite a bit.

Ehh... for me, most of the originals are far, far better than the covers. That being said, I do like a few of the covers:

Goldfinger - Just Like Heaven
The Gourds - Gin And Juice   ... (cause it's hilarious)
John Cale - Hallelujah   ... (also, Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright's versions are better than the original, I just prefer Cale's)

oh, and as for Cake's version of "I Will Survive", second'd

and... that's about it, I think

Yes.

I particularly like covers that somehow mutilate or have fun with or use the original to make a point, ie.

Coil - Tainted Love
Laibach - Sympathy for the Devil (all the versions. Ultimate exercise in deconstruction.)
Inkubus Sukkubus - I Can't Get You Out of my Head
Ewigkeit - Ea 2000: Out For the Count (Cover of Burzum - Ea, Lord of the Depths)
Libitina - Gothic People (Cover of Pulp - Common People)
Therion - Summernight City
Skyclad - Prime Evil

I agree with the Cat Power and add this:

Cat Power - Psychic Hearts(Sonic Youth)
Tori Amos - Enjoy the Silence(Depeche Mode)
Dokaka - Smells Like Teen Spirit(The Bad Plus' version is also good but Dokaka is insane...ly good)
Feist - Secret Heart(Ron Sexsmith)
Low - Little Drummer Boy
Nouvelle Vague - Too Drunk to Fuck(it does in fact kick the original's ass)
TV on the Radio - Mr. Grieves(a capella cover are delicious)
Xiu Xiu - Fast Car

etc.

The first one who says Hurt dies horribly!

Johnny Cash - Hurt (NIN)

BRING IT ON!!

Okay, i'm mostly joking, but i do enjoy the song sometimes.

I can't really think right now, but here's a few (i think most of them have been said already):

Jenny Lewis - Handle with Care
Cake - I Will Survive
Reel Big Fish - Take On Me
Social Distortion - Ring of Fire (This was the song for the grand march at my brother's wedding)
The Jam - David Watts
Goldfinger - Just Like Heaven

There are a lot more, but I'm at work so I really can't think.

Andrew Bird covering Bob Dylan's "Oh, Sister."    IT IS AMAZING

Also, Talking Heads's cover of Al Green's "Take Me To the River."  Duh.  And The Mountain Goats's cover of Neutral Milk Hotel's "Two-Headed Boy," and various live covers of Dylan that Jeff Buckley did.

Actually, no. Dream Theater, who rarely tours with openers, have occasionally done a 'classic album cover' for one half of their set. They did Master of Puppets in Barcelona, New York, and Chicago back in 2002, Number of the Beast on 3 gigs later in the same tour, and Dark Side of the Moon in London, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, and Sao Paolo late last year. There's numerous bootlegs floating about, but I haven't been able to find any, except for the title track from Master of Puppets, and the sound quality was so terrible I trashed it.

Supposedly there will be at least two more, and it's a general consensus one will be a Rush album.

Greenhaus - Transmission

Trance versions of Joy Division songs should not work. But oh god is this tune sexual.

Oh, and continuing the Dream Theater theme, their version of Perfect Strangers (Deep Purple) and their Led Zeppelin medly (The Rover / Achilles Last Stand / Song Remains The Same) from the A Change Of Seasons CD are flat-out jawesome.

This is SO amazing.  Galaxie 500's cover is pretty good too, but not as good.

Other covers I like:

Jeez, this is corny, but I really like Mary Lou Lord's cover of the Bevis Frond's "He Had You."  Also, the Breeders' cover of Sebadoh's "The Freed Pig" is amazing.

Lauren, thanks for mentioning the Mag Fields cover!  If anybody's interested, you can hear it at : http://www.itsmeaningless.com/yes/MFT_GHEH.html

A few more:

Mates of State--Starman (David Bowie)
Grandaddy--Fun Fun Fun (Beach Boys)
The Decemberists--Bridges and Balloons (Joanna Newsom)
Of Montreal--Spanish Dance Troupe (Gorky's Zygotic Mynci)
The Dandy Warhols--Jean Genie (David Bowie)
Rilo Kiley--After Hours (The Velvet Underground)
Belle and Sebastian--Here Comes The Sun (The Beatles)

...and the funniest goddamn cover I've ever heard, The Starting Line--I'm Real (J-Lo)

Personally, I don't look to cover songs for something much better than the original band did.  I just think it's interesting to hear the song in another band's voice.  Especially if it's a band you love and a song you love.  Shakes things up a little.

When I was in middle school, I had a disgustingly large array of pop punk covers that I would listen to a lot.  Oh god why!

I second that! Without a doubt the best song on the "Punk Goes Pop" collection (I too had an obsession with odd punk covers a few years back).

How could I not mention Me First and the Gimme Gimmes? The ultimate punk cover band.

Awesome thing about this cover is that I had never heard the original by the Misfits. The Irene version is really sad and melodic with amazing female vocals. when I heard the original I was very "Bleh."

I can't think of anyone more qualified to cover this. I mean it is just so fitting, Deerhoof is basically the Shaggs if they could play their instruments. Even though one can hardly imagine such a phenomenon.
