I'm sorry, but the Tears for Fears version is just so much better.

Nobody seems to agree with me ever.

I can't stand the original. I like some very Eighties music, but that is just too Eighties for me.

Although I really must buy Songs From The Big Chair..

I like them both for different moods. But if I was only allowed to keep one I'd keep the Tears for Fears.

I prefer the Gary Jules version because I have some very fond memories of it.

Memories of seeing Donnie Darko for the first time and trying to figure out what the HELL I just saw.

I'm sure the fact that I detested the movie might eliminate that "fond memory" factor.

Kai, have you HEARD the Crispin Glover version? It borders on reasoning for committing him to a mental institution moreso than an actual song cover...

That whole damn album is over the edge.

Quote from: AceGun
The Crispin Glover version gives me nightmares.

I can't believe I didn't think of this until now, but Petra Haden does the best covers ever!  There are no instruments, she just makes all the noises with her mouth.  I just picked up her version of "The Who Sell Out."  If you check out her http://www.myspace.com/petrahaden">myspace, there are a couple different covers.  Who can pass up a weird a'cappella/beatbox version of Thriller?

To that end, I'm gonna suggest Dokaka.
http://www.myspace.com/dokaka
I wish his King Crimson covers were up on his MySpace.

Yeah for sure.  Gary Jules sounds to me like he's just turned it into one of REM's slow numbers a la things like 'Nightswimming'.  It's too weepy for me, and way too 90s. ;)

Then in what sense does it fit into the thread?

I like Echoes by Pink Floyd. It's not actually a cover, but I can post it, right?

Tori Amos "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Frank Zappa "Purple Haze" (with ThingFish on vocals)
Mindless Self Indulgence "Bring The Pain"
Metallica "Astronomy"

That's about it. I don't like many covers, but these ones are quite good and nice.

I agree with you, to an extent... the Gary Jules version, while good in it's own right, seems to completely change the context of the song... I mean the words stay the same, sure, vut the tear for fears one felt very different.

I just heard Husker DU's cover of Donovan's 'Sunshine Superman".  Not bad at all, though the original is better.

I agree with Kai on the "Mad World" debate.  Though I LIKED the Gary jules version, sometimes when you make songs more audible, they make less sense...

I am pretty opinionated, because a friend of mine plays the piano and any chance he gets he will play the Gary Jules version. and, you know, I really like Tears for Fears.

Also:

Type O Negative - Hey Pete (a cover of Hendrix's Hey Joe, which is also conveniently a cover). And their cover of Paranoid and Black Sabbath are awesome.

There's actually a better version of the Gary Jules version than the single version on the Donnie Darko soundtrack, but TFF still owns all.

I mean, even if someone did do a really awesome cover, it's one of those songs that just sounds right. Like Love Will Tear Us Apart: no-one will deny that Swans cover is brilliant, but it could never beat the Joy Division version, and nothing ever could.

Also, my dad saw TFF when they were a pub band. I HATE that guy.

Yat-kha's Tuvan throat singing version is pretty exceptional, nonetheless.  MP3 here:

That's what you get listening to someone sing two notes at once.  Really, really, low.  That chorus is insane.

Arab Strap's recent tour has seen them covering Bonnie Tyler's 'It's A Heartache'. It's on a par with Mogwai's covers of Sweet Leaf and Don't Cry in terms of functioning disturbingly well...then again maybe I'm just Scots-biased.

Jawbox - Cornflake Girl (Tori Amos) is pretty good, if you ask me.
But the best cover simply is:

Rapeman - Just Got Paid (ZZ Top)
Steve Albini covering ZZ Top? It doesn't get any better than this.

Steel Pole Bathtub-What I Need (The Cars)
-Wrecks the original in a somewhat punnish manner by making it sound like a car crash. Noise-rock covers of classic rock songs rule, with ZZ Top being the most covered. Spacemanspiff mentioned Rapeman's cover whilst Sonic Youth had a similar facsination as seen when they titled a song "Eliminator Jr.", whilst US Maple did a song called "Letter to ZZ Top".
