I don't really like covers as I prefer older songs, especially those from Bob Dylan.

I though Louis Armstrong covered What a Wonderful World...I didn't realise it was his song.

Also; all of the ridiculous covers that Bodom does (brittaney spears, andrew w.k. etc)

Black Dahlia Murder- Paint It Black (rolling stones)

and the White Stripes cover a lot of old folk/blues tunes like "St. James Infirmary Blues", "Death Letter" and "One More Cup of Coffee" etc and those are all really good

You really can't go wrong with St. James Infirmary Blues. I have a really really slow version that Louis Armstrong did that's just incredible.

I can't think of anyone more qualified to cover this. I mean it is just so fitting, Deerhoof is basically the Shaggs if they were less melodic

It's been said befoce but Deerhoof covering The Shaggs is like prostate cancer covering AIDS.

I like:
A night like this-Professional Murder Music(The Cure)
How soon is now?-Snake River Conspiracy(The Smiths)
Lay lady, lay-Ministry(Bob Dylan)
She moves in mysterious ways-KMFDM(U2)
Raining Blood-Concord Dawn(Slayer)
Head like a hole-AFI(NIN)
I fought the law(and I won)-The Dead Kennedys(Buddy Holly?)
White rabbit-Collide(Jefferson Airplane)
Astrozombies-My Chemical Romance(The Misfits)
Kids in America-Lem(Kim Wilde)
Head Hunter-The Mercy Cage(Front 242)
Down in the park-Marlyn Manson and NIN(Gary Numan)
Are friends electric?-Information Society(Gary Numan)
Cars-Fear Factory(Gary Numan)
Metal-NIN/The Syndicate(Gary Numan)

In my defence, that MCR song is their only good one and I like G. Numan covers ok?

Isn't "I'm Afraid Of Americans" a Bowie song?

The three best covers in the world are:

Goldfinger - "99 Red Balloons" (the version with the German in it)
William Shatner - "Common People"
The Walkmen - "There Goes My Baby"

BAM. Goldfinger's adds so much damn energy to the song you can't help but love it, Shatner's reading of Common People pretty much drips with venom, and The Walkmen's "There Goes My Baby" basically sounds like if whoever did the song initially had done it right. You know, instead of stupid.

Hey was anyone else into the Young Gods?  Their version of Kurt Weill's 'Alabama Song' pisses over eg. Bowie and The Doors' efforts...  Crazy shit.  Not that I've listened to it in maybe a decade.  :o

I'd also like to send out a big "fuck you" to Nick Cave for lack of services rendered to eg. 'Henry Lee', 'What A Wonderful World' and ... even his version of 'Black Betty' (despite being immeasurably better than that horrible disco rock version that everyone knows).

Oh yeah, also "fuck you" to the Presidents of the USA, or more specifically to their fans, for getting all excited about a punky "ironic" version of The Buggles' 'Video Killed The Radio Star'.  Yeah, like the original was really heartfelt ... and only accidentally kitch, right?  Sure... dicks.

Actually, fuck that whole phenomenon of rocking up pop songs and supposedly making them more credible / listenable.

My friends band recently played a rocking, near metal cover of The Pussycat Dolls' "Don't ya", with the singer acting like he was having a mental breakdown screaming "god I wish my girlfriend was hot like her" on the top of his lungs.

Personally, I thought it was hilarious. Stupid, but hilarious.

Of course, I was smashed at the time.

I can't believe I didn't think of this until now, but Petra Haden does the best covers ever!  There are no instruments, she just makes all the noises with her mouth.  I just picked up her version of "The Who Sell Out."  If you check out her http://www.myspace.com/petrahaden">myspace, there are a couple different covers.  Who can pass up a weird a'cappella/beatbox version of Thriller?
