Listen to Oxbow and Aqua at all times and be ironic about it.
Then you are cool in my tome of approved indie kids.

Currently listening to U.N.P.O.C -- Fifth Column.
I particularly like Amsterdam and Here on my own but the whole album is very listenable and very enjoyable.

Nico - Das Lied Der Deutschen

I first heard this song yesterday and I have listened to little else since.
It's magnificent. As far as I am concerned she seems much better on her own than with Velvet Underground.
Quite frankly I thought her deadpan vocals on VUAN were ghastly.

Nicos solo stuff is great, and highly respected in certain circles. I've got an issue of Zero Tolerance, for example, which has a three page spread on her lifes work. The same issue had a quickfire interview with Geezer Butler someone had done in a pub, a huge article on Der Bluthsarch, a report on one of their correspondents who'd pursuaded Sepultura to go to a Soulfly gig with him, and an interview with the director of Legalize Murder. Awesome mag.

I'm currently listening to Earl Haggard - Okie From Muskogee, because I'm trying to write a parody of it, though I am not convinced it isn't already at least half in jest itself, especially given one of the other tracks on the album appears to be about doing rails of coke.

I figure I'd get Desertshore or The End when the funds begin materializing out of thin air.

Beat Happening - Tiger Trap

Judging by this song I will steer clear of Beat Happening in the future.
Not a very good song.

Alabama 3 - Me and the Devil

I have all of Alabama 3 (or A3 in America)'s stuff thanks to a friend, and I'm just listening through a few albums and bootlegs at the moment. This is some pretty good stuff. This song's long, repetitive and sublime, and considering it's just after 'You Don't Dance to Techno', a live version, it just sums up their eclecticness.

You may note that I am in total awe of these guys at the moment.

Right now, I am rocking out furiously to Bohemian Rhapsody...it's pretty much one of the best songs ever recorded.

Oddly enough, the last little guitar part (right before the final "any way the wind blows") has ALWAYS made me think of a Final Fantasy theme for some reason...anyone else have the same problem, or am I alone in this?

Your completely and utterly alone. :P Actually now that you mention it.. it does sort of sound like it. /shrug/

Anyway
Disco Inferno -- a mix of 5 or so EP's from 92-94. I only recently found them and I really, really like them. Melodic basslines and deep deep atmosphere from their samples. I really dig the EP Second Language.

Disco Inferno are great, eh?  Really imaginative use of sampling - the way all the concrete, noisy stuff gets used to build climaxes and so on - and some cool songs.

Meanwhile, I keep coming back to Mariah Carey's 'We Belong Together'.  :D

Destroyer 666 - I Am the Wargod

"Though the tale is over, the song remains the same
Gods and idealism forever call our name
So we rise upon to the mount with Kings at our Command
To turn the endless cycle of the savage bloody hand"

Great song, great lyrics and a great band...

The Mountain Goats - Get Lonely.

I saw this album in a record shop and hadn't heard of it, turns out it came out some time this year. Feels like when you lose someone and don't really believe they're gone. I would probably say this is the best Mountain Goats album I've heard.

edit: spelling

yes this is a sweet record, as is most of the stuff done by Darnielle.

A bit too theatrical, but so is Cave in general. It is still a nice track.

I guess this is Australia's answer to Metalcore, only about 100X less crap. Basically Melodic Death/Thrash with hardcore vocals mixed  with clean singing. Not bad...

Cool!

Been listening to Battles for the first time.  Mainly checked them out because I was told they have the drummer from Helmet's awesome early line-up and that they're a kinda freeform dance/rock band.  Generally the record sounds like a tease for what I imagine is a live juggernaut.
