Actually we had this thread kinda recently but you'd have to do some digging to find it. I can't take a lot of classic rock, in particular Led Zepplin or The Doors. I've been getting into some of The Rolling Stones' stuff but other than that the only stuff I listen to a lot pre-1980 is early punk.

It's okay! I had just finished thinking about Kill Your Idols when I made that thread. I recommend it to everyone. It's a great collection of essays that tear apart venerated, classic albums, from The Doors up to Wilco.

You must have misread the title, Doki - it says 'Great' bands, and you listed U2.

...just kidding, sorry, couldn't help myself there.  (I like some of the stuff U2 did in the 80s, and have a fair amount of respect for Bono's activism, but I would generally have to agree.)  But, so as not to derail the thread, I'm not especially fond of the Velvet Underground either.

I said it last time when Johnny started this, and I haven't changed my mind, I really dislike the Beatles.  A lot.  I don't give much of a rat's ass for anything U2 has done in the last 10-15 years either.

Again this is most of their material. Some of it I do like:

Hendrix Experience
Led Zeppelin
U2
The Who

I really just don't get the Rolling Stones. Admittedly, I have not heard a decent enough cross-section of their work, but what I've heard was really unimpressive.

I've not been able to get into the rolling stones much, they'd probably be better if they'd called it a day towards the end of the 70s.

As far as U2 goes, I can't stand it, other than Achtung Baby.  I'm also not a big Rolling Stones fan, I have 40 Licks, and that's all the Stones I figure I'll ever need.

I had a friend who really liked Nirvana and obsessed over Kurt Cobain.  And one day we're listening to a Nirvana record, and I just let slip for whatever reason that I don't like Nirvana.

He freaked out like I'd just supported pedophilia or something.

Dream Theatre.  James Labrie can go fuck a snail or something.  I can't fucking stand his voice.  That being said, I don't mind their instrumental tracks as much, but I can't figure out why...

depends on your definition of great.  I'm putting them because at Virginia Tech, it's the cool thing to listen to Dream Theatre.

Let's see, bands that are great that even I admittedly respect, and in a way understand why they're considered great, but that I can't stand... Sure, let's see...

Pink Floyd [Except for The Wall and some other material. It's not that I dislikethem, it's just that I cant get into them for some reason...]
Led Zepplin [I can't help it, I cringe. I respect them for the most part, but I cringe.]
Nirvana [I can actually stand them, but I mention them because very few of their songs appeal to me enough to actually want to hear them when they start playing. Heart Shaped Box, On A Plane, and Come as You Are are exceptions.]

exactly, my definition of great.

Man, I'm so glad you're helping to contribute good, useful stuffs to the interwebs, and not just saying random- possibly jokingly, egotistical things for fun.

I like how most people are so filled with hate in this thread they can't even bother to spell the names correctly.

I really just don't like black metal as a genre. It might just be because usually the sound quality makes it almost unlistenable, but something about the sound just puts me off. Unless it's like, Absu, which isn't as much straight BM as it is blackened thrash anyway.

Here is actually the most hate I've ever heard directed at music:

Me: *conversation with Other Dude* "Oh, yeah. Run DMC!"
Friend-Girl M.: "Run DMC? They're a band?"
Me: *gapes*
F-G M: "I thought they were a clothing label."
Me: *is stunned*

How could you hate music so much as to not know who Run DMC are?

I agree to the max here. I think the best material they did was with Dave Navarro because he actually did some songs with them that didn't just sound like EVERYTHING they've ever done.

I find it amusing that people take the piss out of Oasis for them having not learned a new chord since 1994. The Chilis haven't learned a new chord since about 1982.
