Any Good Post-Rock with Vocals?
« on: 14 Sep 2007, 10:03 »

Hey all!

I've just recently gotten into the whole "post-rock" genre, and even though I can appreciate the whole feel of "music without words," I also enjoy what some post-rock groups do with vocals or samples. For example, Mogwai has some lyrics/voices droning in the background (Travel is Dangerous, Cody, and Acid Food come to mind), and Explosions in the Sky has used samples on Have You Passed Through This Night?

It's just nice to sometimes have that extra "instrument" of a voice in the background, and to occaisionally have somethign to sing along to.

So - any suggestions?

Sometimes I really think Unwound should qualify as post rock.

I think maybe he's making a reference to the iconic cover of Slint's Spiderland.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor has vocals in some of their songs.  But they're not like lyrics or anything like that.  More like found-sound or spoken-word pieces.

You can call it drone or whatever you want to. Shipping News qualifies anyway.
I feel incredibly incompetent not remembering the Spiderland cover, seeing as how it is one of the albums I actually used money to acquire.

A Silver Mt Zion

Angels of Light are arguably 'post-rock', inarguably awesome, and do indeed have vocals in all of their songs. The latest especially, 'We Are Him,' reminds me a lot of A Silver Mt. Zion at times who are, by the way, really really excellent.

awesome link, gridgm, thanks a lot!
i'm slowly checking out a lot of these artists, some are really good, others are really hard to find (darn limewire) >:[
i guess i'm looking for some thing with "lyrics" as opposed to vocals; i just used the term vocals because i thought it had a broader scope. any bands have that low droning mumbly sound to their lyrics mogwai and some other bands do? i like how sometimes the lyrics take a backseat to the music, but are still there for singing (or humming) along to.
thanks for all the great suggestions!

Sigur Ros if you don't mind the lyrics in Icelandic and occasional gibberish.

Check out From The Vapor of Gasoline by The Mercury Program. It's the only thing they've done with vocals and I like it a lot.

This is a pretty great album, but it contains no vocals. Just letting you know.

Despite the lack of vocals, I think this person should listen to Maserati.  Jerry Fuchs is awesome.

There's always the books, though they're a bit less "rock." Still good ambient music though (with vocals!).

Hood from the uk. depressing/bleak/fantastic.

I have such a hard time with Hood. They have one amazing song on every album but then the rest of it just sounds like vaguely-electro-tinged Arab Strap to me.

or don't

it's your choice

only about a third to half of their songs are worth listening to, but those one third to a half are very good songs
