Are people allowed to post like that? It seems a bit spammish to me, but I guess I don't really know how things work around here.

Anyways..I would make an ahab thread, but they don't have much material and I don't know how many people are fans of them, so thier would not be much to discuss.

Anyways..People who say that metal is just metal, and that thier are no subgenres, are silly.

What about folk-influenced bands? I like some like windir, mythotyn, windir, falkenbach, tyr, menhir...

Skyclad. Add that to your list of folk metal.

What are they like? I prefer my folk metal to be blackened.

Odroerir are really good...More heavy than black, but still really good.

Anyways, doom.. Mournful congregation are really good. Funeral doom with black influences, from what I heard. It's pretty cool stuff. Drone is also quite good.

Yes, they are. I used to listen to them all the time, but more recently I have been listening to falkenbach, because of the more 'full' synth sound. Shame about the guy from windir (Valfar) dying..

No. I really, really love metalcore. Stand, Converge, Acme, Fall Silent, Skycamefalling, Integrity, even Morning Again... I love that stuff. It doesn't really belong in a metal thread though since it isn't metal, it just takes a lot from it.

I assume you are listing old metalcore bands, as opposed to the new ones? It is the new type I don't like. I haven't listened to the old stuff...

Anyways, a couple of things that annoy me  about metal:

1. All the newbies, who think Linkin Park are metal. And when you tell them they aren't, they are all like 'omgzorz stfu'

2. All the shitty low quality production black metal bands who blast beat all the time. Its just so annoying when the guitars and vocals are muffled (I normally don't have a problem with this) and all you can hear is a relentless blast beat overpowering everything else.

3. How lots of the good bands go bad. Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, basically lots of old thrash bands..

4. There is no irish folk metal. I mean, I haven't found any yet; come on guys, make some irish-influenced folk metal! It would be awesome!

I still think Spineshank's second album is kinda ok. Does that make me a bad person? :-D

Fuck Linkin Park and their ilk though.

Never listened to spineshank. But y'know, it doesn't make you a bad person if you listen to nu metal. If you call nu metal metal though, that makes you a bad person.

Gamma Ray's 'powerplant' is a classic album. Anyone else like?

I didn't realise it when I was typing it but yes, all of those bands are defunct except Converge and their last record was a pretty poor effort. These days most people who used to play that style well have moved onto doing riff bands, influenced by things like Pelican, Led Zeppelin, Isis and Pink Floyd. D-Rail are still going though, they're always good live. Shame really about the lack of it, I like a bit of good intense metalcore and all the recent bands I've come across have been sadly tame. They never seem to have anything to mad about, not like Racetraitor, Chokehold or The Swarm.

So, what do you guys think of drone metal? I know some of you like it...I like sunn O))), moonn, earth, nadja, black boned angel, wormphlegm.

And on the flipside, what about grindcore? Nasum, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Napalm Death, are probably my favourite. Early cattle decapitation is very good too.

I love a bit of grind, although usually of the more technical kind. Goregrind has always bored the hell out of me. I really want the new Agents of Abhorrence, apparently it rips it up in that Discordance Axis fashion. Swarrrm have got a new one out too but I heard it's a bastard to get hold of a copy so I'm not too hopeful about hearing that unless I find it for download. And I'm still sorry I never saw Narcosis with Jamie on vocals before they split.

I'm not too big on grindcore, all I really like is !T.O.O.H.!, Genghis Tron, Pavor and a little bit of Cattle Decapitation.

Can you guys recommend me some good black metal?

I just started listening to Watain's new CD and I love being able to hear the guitars, but I am looking for something a bit more melodic guitarwise, like more melodic tremolo picking.

Good black metal?

Well, I assume you know these bands, but if not the classics: Immortal, burzum, gorgoroth, darkthrone, and mayhem are all good for the basic groundwork of getting to know the genre (some bands you may also want to check out are bathory, celtic frost, and venom; they helped lay the way for black metal).

Here are some very rough generalizations of the type of black metals:

1. Raw black metal- Along the line of darkthrone, stuff like abruptum, tsjuder, koldbrann are good. These bands sometimes have low quality production are often very satanic. LLN bands are recommended further listening.
2. Symphonic black metal- Stuff such as early dimmu borgir, early cradle of filth (the most commercial examples, but y'know), bands like luna ad noctum, emperor, and anorexia nervosa.
3. Folk black metal- Black metal influenced by folk/folk metal. Personally my favourite, I recommend bands such as windir, falkenbach, isvind, kampfar, nastrandir, alkonost,

I'm obsessed with Vlad Tepes, but generally I'm not that impressed with the overall quality of it. Only other ones I really listen to with any sort of regularity are Mütiilation and Belketre. I tend to think of LLN as the ultimate example of how effective anti-advertising can be. Maybe I'm cynical, but I have a feeling that if the good corpse-painted folk of Brest had wanted to keep the LLN secret it would not have been particularly hard. Really, all they're doing is price gouging. Nowadays there are probably people prepared to Ł100 for a genuine copy of March to the Black Holocaust, which is of course insane.

As for Skyclad, if you've not got to them yet, they're not BM at all, but if you like Tyr you should probably be into at least some of their stuff. I'd start on their first album, 'Wayward Sons of Mother Earth'. It's the most metal, if you get me. Also, on the front of blackened folk metal, you might want to try Wyrd. Fucking brilliant stuff.

As for basic BM suggestions, I would say Carpathian Forest and solo Nattefrost were essential 'starting out' bands everyone into BM should be aware of, mainly because the more po-faced wankers in the BM scene hate them for having fun and including a saxophone on a few albums.

True, but the LLN members themselves didn't make that much money.

And I think Aakon Keetreh and Torgeist are better than Belketre. Belathuzur and brenoritvrezorkre are mediocre at best, and vzaeurvbtre is just lulz.

Yeah, but they became immensely kvlt, which is probably worth more. Lord Meyhna'ch didn't make too bad a music career out of it, taken in the context of raw black metal.

I don't have any Aakon Keetreh, I kind of gave up after Brenoritvrezorkre, actually. I never really liked LLN enough to tracking down all of it. I know I don't have any Satanicum Tenebrae, Necro Paris Catacombes, Vermyapre Kommando and a bunch of made up stuff with too many umlauts.

Also, speaking of Kommandos and Anorexia Nervosa, any of you lads or ladettes into The Count Nosferatu Kommando/Cosa Nostra Klub/CNK?

I figure this is as good a place as any to start off.

Since I'm just some random kid who lives in a desert, I have seen no good metal bands live. It's really pretty saddening for me. But, nobody cares about that.

I' personally, have started getting into the Australian metal scene recently. I happened upon a band called Be`lakor a few months back, and now I'm trying to learn a few more bands, like Ne Obliviscaris and other bands that are really difficult to spell.

Other than that, it's mostly some main-stream stuff, with more under-ground mixed in on occasion. Blind Guardian, Clandestine, Helloween, Iced Earth, and some other operatic power-bands are good. Also, stuff like Nile, Necrophagist, Amon Amarth the ever-popular Opeth, Suffocation, Behemoth, Black Forest, Anaal Nathrakh, and so forth.

And, despite the fact that the Nuclear Blast dig was a while ago, that guy needs to realize that at least one of the bands he mentioned has them as a label.

Morningrise was the one that I found really boring. I tried My Arms, Your Hearse just now, but I found is pretty boring overall, until the Maiden cover. Blackwater Park is apparently the one album that isn't on here.
