Desperately wish Wiggins was still here as I reckon he could make a difference to the methods and the standings.

Just like he did in Battle School?

I dunno. My Hushovd t-shirt came in yesterday and it looks pretty ace. I might go back to G-C and get a Zabriskie/Captain America shirt, as well.

So close to throwing a sickie and watching live. Today will pretty much the decider for the race. If the top ten doesn't see a massive split I will be very surprised.

Alas I'm a temp and broke so off to work I go. Unplugging the phone at 6.59 and arming the claymore underneath the doormat.

Kinda debating doing that tomorrow for Alp D'Huez.

Also because I walk to/from work and it's supposed to be like 92 with a heat index of 105.

edit: Andy Schleck won today's stage, Frank second, but Voeckler's now pretty much just Alp D'Huez and holding off Evans in the TT away from winning the race. I don't see it as very likely, but it'd be cool if he did.

I'd never have put him as a contender, but if Voeckler does hold on then he may become my favourite Tour winner yet. Alas the look on his face five metres from the finish leads me to believe that his lead will probably end tomorow shortly after the Col du Telegraphe.

Surprised to see Contador crack today, I really thought he was putting himself back in the game. Even more surprised that the person to make him crack was Evans.

Andy Schleck is in an awkward position though. Having undone the damage of two days that haven't favoured him, he still needs to attack one more time tomorrow. The bad news for him is that Voeckler, Contador, Evans, Cunego and Basso can all descend better than him. Unless he gets ahead on the Galibier and then makes a good move on Alpe D'Huez he may not be able to gain enough time. I think that over a 42k time trial Evans can put at least a minute and a half into him and he doesn't have that right now. Going to be very exciting viewing.

Being a cautiously optimistic Aussie, I'm still prone to remembering Evans in 2008 when he by all accounts should've won in the time trial but was so wrecked because he was doing more work than he should've and didn't make enough time on Contador.

If he has to chase tonight like he did last night I'm worried he won't have it in him, but Shleck has shown his hand now and this stage should be less demanding. BMC had better pull something together though.

At the end of the stage, Andy Schleck is now in yellow, with Frank in second, and Evans at 0:57 going into the time trial.

I know Andy's not a great time trial rider (edit: he's the defending Luxembourg TT champion, but..), but I think he can hold up 57 seconds.

Depends on his and Evans's reserves. I could see Evans trying quite a bit last night when he dropped back, but he also had a decent stretch surrounded by his team while Schleck was being towed by Contador. Who was quite impressive from somebody who had conceded defeat less than a day before.

Disappointed, Cuddles is an annoying grub and I wish there were better than him. I knew it didn't look good on the last day in the mountains. However am now revelling in the best ever result for a British rider. First brit to win green, sixth in overall stage wins and first ever person to take three wins in Paris.

Off the bike I think Evans is pretty unfairly maligned. It's okay Cadel, you just want to be left alone with your bike and your dog and your woman! I understand!

I think a lot of his reputation for being prickly and difficult was made on the back of behaviour from when he was clearly in an uncomfortable and unhappy environment. If you read or watch any of the interviews with him from this year's Tour it's remarkable how much more relaxed and friendly he is.

Just lost 8-2 and have precisely zero full-backs who aren't either banned or injured (no, Armand Traore doesn't count, ever) so let's invest the Clichy/Eboue money in yet another budget forward.

Can't wait to break the league and win by 20pts with a revolutionary 1-2-7 formation (the 1 is Emmanuel Frimpong and the 7 are children with broken legs).

NCAA "foot"ball starts like..tomorrow.

NHL training camp is my best guest. I'm going to a Bruins-Islanders game on the 23rd, and that's their like..second or third game.

edit: Or maybe it's the Brewers' magic number to clinch the Central.

Your last suggestion makes most sense given that jwhouk gave two updates on Aug 28th. Too lazy to check the scores for that date, but if his team won and the closest chasing team lost, then that would explain it.

I forgot that the Central fell to shit and the Brewers were running away with it.

But I think it does oddly coincide with the start of the NHL preseason as well.

The Pirates are just the Pirates. The Cardinals have had injury problems, and not the good kind (pitching issues).

The Brewers just have this history of not making things easy.

I just learned that one of the dead players was Alexander Vasyunov, who I saw play in several games for the Albany Devils last season. He also notched his first and only NHL goal during a brief stint in New Jersey.

I'm not even a fan of Lokomotiv (the only KHL team I vaguely pay attention to is Kazan), but I'm really, really bummed out on this. I could use a good cry right now.

If there's any good news, I suppose it would be that one of the players on the flight (Alexander Galimov) actually survived the crash.

Karlis Skrastins, one of the Lokomotiv players, was my favorite player.

He was drafted by the Preds in '98, and played for the Admirals in Milwaukee for a year and a half before joining the NHL.

My heart goes out to his wife and two daughters.

This summer sucks, hockey-wise.

Karlis Skrastins was an absolutely outstanding hockey player. He was with Colorado for a while back when I still liked them, and played for Dallas, who is one of my friends' favorite teams.

Oddly enough, in 2007, he was traded to the Panthers for Ruslan Salei, who was also a member of Lokomotiv and died yesterday.

Another name most NHL fans should recognize is Pavol Demitra, who played for Ottawa, Los Angeles, St Louis, Minnesota, and Vancouver. He was also the captain of the Slovakian national team and played in 3 Olympics.

And sadly for jwhouk, another former Pred was in the crash as well. Josef Vasicek, who spent 7 years in the NHL and won the Stanley Cup with Carolina.

Karlis had the nickname "Iron Man" for his consecutive games played streak as a defenseman in the NHL.

I feel for his two daughters, who were suddenly on a trip to Europe, not realizing that they weren't going to see daddy play hockey.

Now, onwards with pure crap: The Red Sox think it's April again.

Galimov had severe burns on over 80 per cent of his skin, so I wasn't optimistic to begin with. I vaguely recall somebody coming back to life from 92 per cent burn - a few decades back, so my source may be outdated. But the same source says that normally losing 80 per cent of your skin is fatal. May well be that Galimov also had other trauma on top of the burns. A technician/mechanic seems to be the sole survivor on board that flight.

He might not be long for this world, either, since he apparently had the same level of burns and was also in an induced coma.

I guess several teams in the KHL had offered players to Yaroslavl for this season, but they decided not to play this year.

And that got me thinking about what provisions are in place for these sorts of freak accidents. Luckily, punk rock podcasts answered that for me:

The club will instead participate in the 2011–12 season of the Russian Major League (VHL), the second top ice hockey league in Russia after the KHL, in December 2011 and will automatically be qualified for the VHL playoffs.[3] Also, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl's squad for the 2012–13 KHL season will automatically be qualified for the KHL playoffs that season, and the club may request allowance to use more than six non-Russian players in the KHL squad.[4]

From what I understand, that rule has actually been on the books in the league bylaws for decades - perhaps even close to a century. I think the league, after the 1919 Influenza epidemic, came up with some contingency plans should one of its teams lose most of their players to illness or accident. They may have just updated it after things like the ManU plane crash and the Marshall stuff happened.

Oh, and:

I thought the 1919 contingency plan was "fuck it, cancel the Stanley Cup".
